3. il"'lliERs
Temperatures during the whole p0riod were usually below freezing.
The weather was usually clear and visibility was good.
:::in 4. was very rough with maIlY deep gullies and narrOi1 rOU;;:l
roads. The ground was frozen to a depth of two (2) or three (3) inches and
any movement or a tank would cause it to break through this frozen crust and
bog down. Movement for any purpose was impractical.
5. OONCLUSIONSs
During the present period heavy maintenance has been under taken on
tanks in t..'1e line under the very "noses snd eyes" of the enemy with a sur
prising degree of complete success in most cases. One example is cited:
-4
One tank located approximately five hundred (500) yards from the enemy, de
veloped engine trouble requiring or the engine. The tank could
not be moved under its own power, nor could it be evacuated by towing. In
order to accomplish this, a T-2 was placed in rear of the tank a night prior
to the engine changing. During the follolling day the normal dismanteling
of armor plate was accomplished.' At night the new engine which had been com
pletely prepared for installation, was by truck to the tank. The ex
change was effected, and by daylight the old enJine onUle truck was at the
Battalion Service Canpany in the rear area. The T-2 returned to the Company
Maintenance area and the tank ..yas operative. The only enemy reaction was a
few rounds or mortar and small arms fire in the near areas. Due to the location
of the tank in the mountains, it was impossible to evacuate by towing. 'his
proceedure is not completely recQn1nended for efficiency, hO\7ever, qualified
and well trained mechanics can accomplish repairs of a heavy nature
under adverse conditions.
It is still necessary to supply Company "A" located at vicinity 9633CJ7
one section second platoon Campanl "Cd located 946318 by mule.
are only able to carry three (3) rounds of ;'men mud
or icy conditions are prevalent. Uiules are being borrowed from the Infantry
Regiment the tank company is supporting. It is to be noted that a remarkable
improvement has been made in the degree of cooperation between tank units and
the Infantry. This not only applies to matters of supply, but generally to all
matters involving the support of the Infantry. An Assistant Division Commander
recently remarked that this is the first time he has seen "an era of good feel
ing" between armored and infantry personnel.

On 24 February 1945, the battalion began exchanging its remaining
thirty-nine (.39) ltI4 and M4Al tanks or J44A3 tanks. This exchange was still
going on at the end of the period.
Temperatures during the early part of February were usually below
freezing with occasional snow flurries and thaws. During the later part of
the period, days were usually sunny and Wann and nights were cold.
The terrain was very rough with many deep gullies and narrow, rough
roads. ROad conditions iDproved greatly due to decrease in precipitation, the
sur.ny weather and the work of the engineers.
5. OONCUiSIONSS
Direct fire b.Y tanks and tank destroyers on enemy PQsitions is very
effective in defensive positions. At least one German Soldier deserted atter
being in a house which was knocked down by direct tank fire. Another prisoner
of war from 5th Canpany, 578th Infantry Regiment, taken ,by 3d Battalion, 36lst
Infantry ReGiment, on 3 March 1945, stated that fire fran tanks or tank destroy
ers was most ei'fective. Observed results of these fires showed many houses
knocked down and numerous pillboxes, bunkers and OF's dsmaged or destroyed.
The effectiveness of this firing was partially due to the extensive use
of telephone ccmmunications. Wire has been laid to tanks in sane
cases, making it possible for infantry or tank OF's to designate targets and ad
just fire quickly and accurately.
Iiovements of tanks in front iine positions has brought down little enemy
artillery fire. Actually, according to prisoner of war reports, tank movement
tends to ;::onf'use tha enemy. One prisoner of war stated that his Sergeant (in
a front line position) heard a tank moving just before dawn one morning, but
could not determine which direction it was going. The enemy company was alerted
and some sort of attack was expected. Actually, the tank in question was mewing
back to Battalion I.iaintenance.
Despite the fact t!lat over thirty (30) tanks and, over twenty (20) tank
destroyers have been in direct firing positions, many of them firing regularly
frQD. the sarne vicinity the periOd, there is no indication that the
enemy has determined the positions of these vehicles. Prisoner of war statement
indIcates that t!ley no knowledge of tank or tank destroyer pos!tions
and the firing vehicles have received sporadic artiller.y at the most. Same fir
ing has been done at nit;:lt and the flas.l:U.ess powder, which was used, has again
prevented tile eneny from locating the positions of the firing venicles.

5. CONCWSIONSs
Direct fire by tanks and tank destroyers en enemy positions proved very
effective in keeping enemy SP IS, mortar positions, artillery and machine
gun positions pinned down, which aided in reducing and keeping to
a minimum the enemy harassing fire on our troops. The defensive fire posi
tions selected for our guns were situated 50 that our cross fire protected
our 'own gun positions, thereb.J enabling our guns to expose themselves more
in order to obtain maximum fire power.
The accuracy and effectiveness of the fire was partially due to the
extensive use of telephone communication. Wire ha.s been laid to individual

tanks in some cases, making it possible for infantry or tank Opls to des
ignate targets and adjuSt fire quickly and accurately.
Movement of friendly tanks in front line positions tended to draw a
little enem.y fire. Indications were that the enemy was becoming more
"touchy" and our movement tended to confuse him.
There still is no indication that the enemy has determined the loca
tion and position of our tanks, despite the fact that over thirty (30)
tanks and over twenty (20) tank destroyers have been in direct fire posi
tions the period in the same vicinity. Sporadic fire at most
has been received occasionally by our firing vehicles. Some night firing
has been done and the flashless powder, (A.P.C., M6lAl', which was used,
has again prevented the enemy locating the positions of the firing
vehicles. '
Our rocket tanks wene fired twelve (12) days rut of the period with
very good effect. Targets covered Hm, 363 (935334), C. RIO BUI!
(9343.39', MT. ,AR;.:Aro (952341), CASEIJ..A (9.443.39), SCANNO (952341), C.

was exceedingly well covered. Results or casualties caused were unknown.
"Locate" Air 0'1 and ground OP reported targets "well covered", "beautiful
coverage", and "just where we want them". Total rounds fired for period
1313 rounds 4.," rocket actuaJ4r fired, 240 rounds failed to fire, and 6
random rounds were fired. Results of this rocket fire was very good and
added greatly in keeping enemy harassing fire down. Enemy OP I S and gun
positions were bloWn out time and again and in some cases have not been
replaced. (See Annex #1)
