xviii Warnings and cautions

Electrical handling considerations

CAUTION
Static sensitive devices

The plug-in units contain static sensitive devices. These devices are sensitive to static electricity and must be protected by special handling and packaging. Refer to the static sensitive handling procedures in Documentation Overview and Safety, NTP 323-1061-090. Before removing the TN-1X subrack from the inner carton of the packaging, personnel must wear conductive bonded wrist straps conforming to BS CECC 00015 Part 1. The straps must be connected to an available earth point in the absence of an ESD bonding point on the equipment.

Electrical safety considerations

WARNING
Power to the subrack

The subrack should not be powered-up until the installation procedures are completed and the subrack is ready for commissioning. If the parent rack is already powered, the relevant rack fuses must be removed before the power connector is connected to the subrack.

Optical safety
CAUTION
Optical safety

Observe the warnings and cautions detailed in Documentation Overview and Safety, NTP 323-1061-090. Note: The subrack should not be powered until after the installation is completed.

Warnings and cautions xix

Optical connector/bre handling

CAUTION
Optical connectors

Clean all optical connectors by an approved method before making any optical connection. When making an optical connection, do not rotate the optical connector unnecessarily. When not connected, t all optical plugs and couplings with captive caps. CAUTION
Damage to optical bres

When dressing bres, take care not to exceed the minimum bend radius (typically 35 mm) and do not overtighten tyraps used for dressing as damage may result. When connecting connectors, ensure that the optical bres are not trapped by the protective cover on the unit before sliding the unit in position. WARNING
Danger from glass chips

If there is any suspicion of a glass chip in the eye, seek medical attention at once. The following precautions must be taken when working with single-bre optical cables: Safety glasses must be worn when installing optical bres. Small bits of glass bre are almost invisible. After handling single bre cables, hands should always be wiped clean or washed before making any contact with the eyes. Handle optical bres carefully and always position them in a safe and secure location during installation. Do not handle pieces of cut bre with bare ngers. Use tweezers, or the sticky side of a piece of vinyl tape, to pick up and discard any loose bre ends. All bre cuttings should be placed in a plastic bottle provided for that purpose.

Receiving and unpacking

This chapter describes the procedures to be used when a Nortel TN-1X subrack is delivered to the customer as part of a supply-only contract.

1-

Off-loading
The consignment is the responsibility of the delivery vehicle driver until it has been off-loaded to the installation or storage area. Off-loading must therefore be supervised by the driver. Only authorised lifting equipment and slings must be used unless a reciprocal agreement for use of the customers equipment is in force and is valid.

Package handling
Identify the top face of the container, identiable by packing labels, and keep the top face uppermost at all times. The package contents are to be considered fragile at all times. If packages are to be handled in wet weather conditions, adequate waterproof covering must be used to protect the package.

Storage
If the TN-1X equipment is to be stored before installation, the following storage conditions must be applied: Do not remove the equipment from its protective packaging. Store the equipment in an environment which is dry and controlled to prevent the formation of condensation. Whenever possible, store packages at a height which eases handling, i.e. between waist and shoulder height. Do not store the packages near sources of heat. Do not place heavy objects, e.g. wooden transit cases, on top of the package.

1-2 Receiving and unpacking

Unpacking
Tools required The following tools are required to remove a TN-1X subrack from its primary and secondary packaging: Sharp pointed blade knife Conductive bonded wrist strap conforming to BS CECC 00015 Part 1 Packaging removal The removal procedure is detailed in Figure 1-1. Packaging disposal The packaging may be disposed of as waste material. The customer may, however, nd it advantageous to retain the packaging which may then be used to return the equipment to Nortel should the need arise.

Checking contents
Check the package contents against the Customer's Advice Note and ensure that the range of plug-in units tted to the supplied matches the TN-1X variant specied on the order. Figure 1-2 shows the layout of the plug-in units and interface modules of a typical equipped subrack.

2-8 Installation information

Installation of trafc cables to rack

Procedure 2-1 details the procedure for installing trafc cables into an NT ETSI rack, a 19" rack, or a BT Type 90 or 91 rack. The choice of cables will depend on customer requirements.
Procedure 2-1 Installing trafc cables to rack Step 1 Action Determine the routing of the traffic cables depending on the number of 2 Mbit/s and 34 Mbit/s tributary cables required and the cable entry (top or bottom) to the rack. For top cable entry, run the cables into the rack and leave at least 850 mm below the designated top fixing position of the subrack. This allows sufficient cable for dressing and termination. For bottom cable entry, run the cable up the rack and leave at least 250 mm above the designated top fixing position of the subrack. To assist in laying the cable in, Figure 2-4 illustrates the dressing layout after the cords have been terminated. Secure all cables using tyraps.

Cable and bre labelling

All cables and bres are to be labelled at the rack with designations agreed with the customer. The labelling kit is supplied as part of the TN-1X installation kit (Appendix A, Table 3-8 Item 1).
Procedure 2-2 Cable and bre labelling Step 1 2 3 Action Prepare all markers by neatly writing the designation on the white area using a ball-point pen or permanent marker. Peel off the marker from the backing card. Fix each marker in turn to the relevant cable by placing the white area (with the designation side showing) on the cable and wrapping the transparent part round it. Ensure that each marker is positioned so that the legend can be read without the need to move or twist any cables. Ensure that, where possible, markers are neatly and uniformly positioned on the cables. Make a final check to ensure that all designations are consistent with project documentation (cable schedules, site drawings).

Installation of subrack into the rack

Procedure 2-3 details the mounting of the TN-1X subrack into an NT ETSI rack, a 19" rack, or a BT 90/91 rack. The installation involves tting the subrack mounting brackets to the subrack and tting captive nuts to the parent rack. In the case of the ETSI rack, bre turning devices are also tted to the subrack and slide mounts may be used as a subrack mounting aid. For the BT racks, bre turning devices are tted, but slide mounts are not used. The item numbers in Procedure 2-3 refer to Table 3-1 to Table 3-5 in Appendix A. WARNING
Risk of personal injury

Due to the weight of the subrack, the mounting of the subrack in the rack requires two installers for safe working.
Procedure 2-3 Installing the subrack in the rack Step 1 2 Action Locate the top and bottom fixing holes on each side of the rack and fit captive nuts (Table 3-1 Item 1, Table 3-3 Item 3). For ETSI and BT racks, fit the fibre turning devices (Table 3-1 Item 6) to each side of the fibre tray using one M4 screw (Table 3-1 Item 2) in the centre of each device. Adopting a two-man lift, locate the subrack in its required position and secure it using four M6 mounting screws (in the case of the 19" rack, these screws are not part of the mounting brackets, Table 3-3 Item 8). Fibre guides may now be fitted to the upper edge of the fibre tray and slid into the correct position, one below each optical unit (use of these is covered in Procedure 2-15).

As there are no fibre turning devices, extreme care should be taken not to exceed the minimum bending radius when routing the cords into the subrack. The desired position should be maintained by lightly cleating with tyraps as required. Fit one fibre guide per cord to the tray and slide into the correct position. Fit the cords into their fibre guide and go to Step 2.

Connect the optical cords to their corresponding connectors on the optical units, ensuring that the key-way has engaged before tightening (upper connector Rx, lower connector Tx). Close the optical connectors covers. Reinsert the optical units by fully opening the ejector levers, pushing the unit until the levers locate in the extrusion groove and close both levers simultaneously. Do not push on the front panel. Taking care not to trap any optical cords, slide the subrack back into the rack and secure it. Close the fibre tray cover.

Local Craft Access Panel

The Local Craft Access Panel (LCAP) provides a 25-way D-type connector for the CAT local terminal and a BT style telephone socket for the EOW handset. These connectors are located behind a hinged cover on the left of the panel. Neither of the above connectors are required to be connected during installation of the subrack. A second 25-way D-type connector, on the rear of the LCAP, provides connection to the Flexible Access Module. No installation actions are required.

Fitting inlls, covers and designation labels

A subrack cover kit (25S KM00 750 HFL) is supplied with each subrack variant (see Appendix A Table 3-6). If the equipment is mounted in an NT ETSI rack, subrack inll panels are required (part of 25S KM00 750 HFL kit). If the equipment is mounted in an NT ETSI rack, dummy covers can be tted, if required, to improve aesthetics (see Appendix A Table 3-7).
Procedure 2-17 Fitting the inlls, covers and designation label Step 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Action Identify the Station Interface Area cover assembly (this item is not used with 19" racks). Ensure the locking screws are in the open position. Pull back the left and right latches simultaneously and locate the cover over the Station Interface Area of the subrack. Release the latches and check that the cover is correctly located. Turn the left and right locking screws counter-clockwise and clockwise respectively. Identify the infill panels. These are used on ETSI racks only to conceal mounting flanges. Locate each infill onto the mounting studs on the mounting flanges and firmly push it home until flush with the surrounding surfaces. Identify the sheet of designation labels, listed in the installation kit parts lists (Appendix A Table 3-1 to Table 3-5). Select the appropriate label corresponding to the position in which the subrack is mounted and fit it to the right hand side of the fibre tray cover as shown. For ETSI racks only, when all the equipment is installed, any empty spaces can be fitted with dummy panels if required for aesthetic purposes (Appendix A Table 3-7). Fit M6 cage nuts to the rack and secure brackets to these positions using M6 screws. Push-fit the dummy covers onto the bracket studs (covers of 10 SU and above are also equipped with spring handles).
