DISGRASYA

By: Conrado de Quiros

The author explains how it is important to listen to someone decision. It says that it is very much important to make some respect to ones choice and decisions for his/her life. The author wants to show that Disgrasya in this essay doesnt mean that the happenings in there are really worst or shall we say the happenings in there are unacceptable accident which leads to disgrace. Disgrasya in our simple vernacular means to have worst experience to a certain situation. But the author tends to states that it is really a disgrasya when someone insists not to listen and give importance to others decisions. Our life is really not too, long. Anytime our Almighty God will get it back from us. We have to make sense and stand to our own way of deciding whether whats good or bad for us. No one could ever make a certain acceptable decision for our own. Even though in this essay, parents are involved in decision makings, still they have to respect the decision made but their children. Although they know much better than us, still we have to set our feelings and our hearts to where we feel good and where we are comfortable. In the first ad, it is the father who decides the course of his son, but then after its son realizes that it is really good enough for him he would be the one who will chose his course. Its father could no nothing but to accept because it is not the father who suffer in going back to school with the course its son doesnt want to. In t5he second ad, it states that the mother want to insist who will be the girlfriend of his son. For in fact, the mother will not be the one will be forever with the girl she chose for his son. It must be her son, who is responsible enough to choose who will be his partner in life. Life is more beautiful if you know that it runs having your own decisions. You may appreciate it better if you could stand having with a dignity to stand to your own decisions. In this essay, we can therefore say that in making decisions it is ourselves who is responsible enough in making them. Not all the time other people can make decisions for us. Maybe they can decide for us, but there is a fact that we cant deny how it is good to feel if we are following our own decisions. Sometimes people around us insist to decide for ourselves. Sometimes our parents get involved in it, that there would come a time that we can do nothing but to follow what they want. But as a human who exist in this world, we are given the ability to think for our own. Even though we can say that sometimes it is more good to follow others decision for us, still our heart seeks for an acceptable way of managing our own life. We may get confuse to which decision we may refer but however we can really do some way how to create our own decisions. Sometimes it is hard but could feel that you are contented to it and youre comfortable to have it by yourself. Whenever your decision turns to be wrong still it is more acceptable because you have tried and you committed a mistake by just doing the best of your own decisions, than committing a mistake by following others decision by yourself.

INFLUENCE OF CULTURE
By: Carlos P. Romulo

Carlos P. Romulo, the author of this essay tends to explain how different countries adopt the culture of countries that influence them. It says that some countries can hardly avoid following different culture of other countries. It shows that sometimes a certain country prefers to use and to follow the culture of the country that influenced them. Sometimes, some counties who dont focus on their culture were influenced by their nearby country that there would come a time that they will continuously follow it already. It seems that once your country is influenced by other culture you cant get out to it and nothing more to do but to follow what majority believes in. Also the author is trying to say that there is no explanation or further discussion to individual idea. It is to someone if he/ she would follow system of discussing it to others to make it more valid. But as we are following to our adopted culture, ones idea needs no justification. Our country has its own culture but returning in to our history, our country was influenced by the culture of other country who tried to colonize us. Going back to our past, we are also influence by the Americans. America has its own culture to follow but they are traditionally presented as opposed to high culture. They become followers of culture when the Europeans influence them. Europe was ultimately known in favor to high culture. America was largely a European discovery and its early history was largely one of Europeanization. But soon America began, in turn to influence Europe, and the concerned of the sensitive European today is over the Americanization of Europe. But there is a fact that in our times, it is quiet an avoidable to consider America politically which is also to say that it is quiet impossible to neglect consideration of her cultural influence. The fate of British culture has been to a large extent inextricably link with Britains experienced as an empire. We as the owner of our country most love and follow our own culture. We must give importance to it because it serves as the memory given to us by our ancestors. Loving our own culture make us a true Pilipino. It shows how much we make sense of our country and making our ancestors to be proud to us. Having this influence of culture, we cant escape and we cant avoid continuing following the culture of other countries. The culture of other countries is already in our everyday lives. Almost all the times we are used to it. Not knowing we already forgot how to love our own culture which will make us as one true country. Even in the curriculum of the Philippines educational system sir Walter Scott, Jane Einstein, Robert Burns, Percy Byssi Shelly, John Keats, and Rupert Brooke pre figured in the reading list of our high schools and colleges. It cant be denied that they are trying to influence us more by using their culture. We are neither an English Americans, nor British Americans we are Filipino and we have the right to use our own culture. Making use of how they speak is not really a requirement. We dont have to speak like them because we have our own way of pronouncing English words on our own. And now we must take our right to role our lives even without the influence of culture of the different countries.

VALUES
By: I. V. Mallari

The author explains thoroughly the kinds of values and the need to discern the good values to be strengthened during these modern times and changing world, where a lot of pressures challenge us. It emphasizes that ones sense of values determine our attitude toward life and our behavior toward others. Values consciously and unconsciously guide us in our decision making. True enough, our sense of values is a very important component of mans life. Since not all values are proper and good, it is important that we should know its effects on our daily life and relationships. Life is short and limited and we try to find meaning in our activities and relationships. Our moral sense of values flows our attitude toward god, toward nature and toward our fellow beings. How we perceive god depends on our sense of values. Merely participating in different religious activities does not guarantee a good sense of values. The author explains that how we personally see god in our life reflects our attitude towards our environment and others. Nature gives us an abundant wealth through its mountains and valleys, various bodies of water, its plants and animals and its minerals. We may exploit them for our selfish motives or use them wisely, develop and cherish them for the generations to come for us. We must also acknowledge that the nature has its ways avenging for whomever violets its harmony. And what is our attitude toward fellow men? As we seek harmony with others, we should always remember that no matter what race, sex, nationality, social political economic religious status and affiliations, educational attainment, beliefs a man has, each is important in this life and in this world. Each has to perform to the best of his abilities the self appointed tasks. Without cannot attain anything by ourselves alone because we need one another to achieve something. Each is a piece in the puzzle that makes it a whole. Each is working our consideration and respect. Aesthetic values are those we consider as pleasing and beautiful. Our times nowadays push us to our limits because of the pressures that we can do every day. And it is in this time when we have refined our sense of values and strengthen them. And for us who are recipients of these forms of arts, say a movie or a play or poem, unconsciously we play the two roles simultaneously- that of participants an onlooker. To strengthen our sense of values, exposing to all forms of arts will give us cathartic experiences where we can internalize and gained fortitude to cope with similar problems and difficulties in the future. That when vaccination is done our system automatically builds up defense that remains even long after the germs have been killed. When our system is infected with the same disease again it can ward off the disease.

THE HIDDEN INJURIES OF THE POOR

By: Randy David

According to Randy David the author of this essay entitled The Hidden Injuries of the Poor explains clearly that the basic injury of the poor is the humiliation of their levels. It says that this is continuously happening in our country. They are having the bad luck to have the things they want to have. Somewhat like that they are discriminated by a person who stands to be higher than them in terms of wealth. The author also trying to states that the right of the poor to be treated equal is now slowly fading. A person having a good and wealthy life doesnt pay attention to the needs of the poor. They dont even have the time to help the poor in terms of personal necessities. The author tries to speak out the truth that the poor people nowadays doesnt have the chance to be cared whenever they are in need of it. It also says that poor people are not actually given the chance to make their lives to have progress. They are stored to their humanity. Humiliation, discrimination and having no right to be given an equal treatment by others, in our part of the world, these are the most common injuries of the class, to borrow a term from the sociologist Richard Senett. To be poor is not only to be deprived of material necessities. More than this, it is to be stripped of self-esteem. It is to suffer persistent degradation in ones own eyes. Senett originally used this concept to refer the emotional wounds that the working class in affluent societies carry when surrounded by a whole culture of success, they seem nevertheless unable to do anything right to improve their lives. In such a world, says Senett, social difference will and competence, rather than of structural injustice. Now the basic injury in our society is the humiliation that the poor suffer, personal worth is taken away from them. This results to lingering sense of worthlessness and failure that can feel explosions of rage. It is not really good to treat people having no position in our society in bad ways. We must treat everybody equal. People having nothing in them but only their family has the right to be cared and to have attention from others who are higher than them. They are also people like us. It is just an accident that they fall to nothing. Without them our society or country would be nothing. They must be given a chance to experience the life they aim to have for everyday of their existence in this world. It is not their fault to be poor. Instead of treating them bad, discriminating and humiliating them, lets try to help them. It is their pleasure and blessings to receive wealth and things they want coming from the heart of people who are really interested to help them. They must be also considering as a part of society because they are also like you, like me and like everybody who has a heart and feelings to consider. They are now in the situation they have now. But make sense, youre not only the human being here. Open your heart and mind to help other people who need you. You dont own your life; you dont know how long you would be rich. Try to help poor people to be out of discrimination and humiliation, which is their basic injury in our society.
