Our MissiOn
Immaculata Academy, a private, Catholic, college-preparatory high school, is dedicated to educating young women based on Franciscan values. With a family spirit in mind, our goal for each student is that she maximize her potential academically, spiritually and personally, so as to be an instrument of positive change in society.

Our rOOts
Immaculata Academy was founded in 1928 by the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph (FSSJ), the sponsoring body. The school continues to be conducted by the FSSJ and dedicated lay and religious teachers. The schools foundational standards of excellence continue today, and the faculty and staff at Immaculata Academy are constructing a bright future with enthusiasm, optimism and hope. The staff and students are continuing the dream of young Colette Hilbert, who placed the Academy under the patronage of Mary, our Mother, and sought to open young ladies minds and hearts to the will of God in their lives.

franciscan studies
Immaculata Academy embraces Catholic Franciscan spirituality in every aspect of the school community. We incorporate the Franciscan Studies module into our course offerings through religion classes and annual student retreats. Each grade level concentrates on one core Third Order Franciscan value - humility, poverty, conversion and contemplation - and corresponding Franciscan virtues - respect, service, peacemaking and prayer/joy - from the Belief Statement of Immaculata Academy. In addition, each year a Franciscan symbol is discussed. These Franciscan values are studied through the writings and teachings of St. Francis and St. Claire of Assisi as well as of Mother Colette Hilbert, Foundress of the Franciscan Sisters of St. Joseph, sponsors of Immaculata Academy.

spiritual life
A relationship exists among all members of the Immaculata Academy family that is respectful, accepting, caring, cooperative, and Christian in its understanding of the rights of all. Students are prepared to meet the challenges of the adult world as true committed Christians through annual retreats, a program of religious studies, and a total of 80 hours of service activities which foster spiritual growth. In light of our Franciscan values of harmony, respect, service, peacemaking, stewardship, joy and prayer, we encourage each student to use her leadership skills so as to be an instrument of positive change in society.

faculty & staff OrientatiOn

Each faculty and staff member learns about the history and spirituality of Immaculata Academy so as to become a model for the students and incorporate Franciscan moments into their classroom curriculum. Additionally, the annual faculty and staff retreats center on a specific aspect of Franciscan spirituality.

franciscan atMOsphere
One of our goals is to have visual reminders throughout the school of our Catholic Franciscan culture. To that end, we have placed various symbols of this heritage in the classrooms and other gathering spaces around the campus.

My dream of attending an Ivy League school became a reality with the help of my family and the teachers at Immaculata Academy who supported me in the pursuit of my goals. I cannot wait to discover the opportunities awaiting me at Wharton! - Katlyn Grasso, 11

athletics
Immaculata Academy considers the athletic program an integral part of the schools educational program. We believe this program provides experiences affecting student-athletes physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. We believe that by promoting sportsmanship at all levels, the athletic program instills pride, reinforces a sound value system and enhances the individuals self-image, as well as the image of the school. Our athletic program should achieve and maintain the following goals and objectives:
1. Develop high moral and ethical values, standards and behaviors in student athletes. 2. Develop student athletes who demonstrate good sportsmanship, including respect for opponents and officials, and maintain self-control at all times. 3. Concentrate on skill development and on student-athlete participation in contests. 4. Develop a competitive winning attitude, consistent with good sportsmanship. 5. Encourage individual commitment to personal and team goals. 6. Promote pride in the school and athletic program. 7. Emphasize and reinforce the importance of academic achievement. 8. Discuss with student-athletes the importance of a lifetime positive attitude toward physical fitness. 9. Develop qualities of leadership.

National long-jump champion Kaitlyn Lopez was also a member of the Cross Country and Track teams that each won their AllCatholic meet during the 20102011 school year

While our athletes have found tremendous success on the playing field, we take greater pride in the values they have internalized as part of their athletic participation: discipline, honor, courage, teamwork and respect - all important traits toward being an influence of positive change in society.

MaGGie, krista and lianne van waGner

Krista Van Wagner, 79, owner of Curlys Grill and Banquet Center in Lackawanna, enjoyed her time at IA so much that she decided some 30 years later to encourage her daughters, Maggie, a sophomore, and Lianne, a junior, to attend. Through my time at IA, I developed a close group of friends that I still keep in touch with today, Krista said. Along with being better prepared for college, IA gave me a tremendous feeling of self-confidence, which helped me strive as a chef in a male-dominated profession.
