765.M41: Chapter Losses to date: 13 Lost in warp, 21 Irrecoverable battle losses, 9 Gene seed failure, 4 Inquisitorial purge, 16 Other circumstances. (For the record, 134 chapters listed above) THE FOUNDINGS There have reportedly been 26 foundings so far. M31- FIRST- PROGENITOR. (?)- Legions made up from gene seed samples of the primarchs, even while primarchs scattered and undiscovered. M31- SECOND- PRIMOGENITOR. (30,021)- Legions split up into chapters. It is unclear whether new chapters were built up from gene seed as well. M33 ????- THIRTEENTH- DARK FOUNDING. Unknown number or fate of chapters. M36? TWENTY-FIRST. Known as the Cursed Founding. Occurs shortly before the age of apostasy (which was in early M36). M38 M40 M41- (40, 736)- TWENTY-SIXTH. PRIMARCHS THAT SURVIVED THE HORUS HERESY According to 2nd edition background, 9 of the Primarchs "survived" the Horus Heresy- the rest died or fled into the Eye of Terror. We know that Sanguinius and Horus died. We also know (as of WD 261) that Ferrus Manus is presumed dead at Isstvan V (though his body may have been recovered and taken to Mars). We know that Guilliman, Jonson, Khan, Russ, Dorn, Vulkan, and Corax survived (especially since they are mentioned in the most recent Black Templars background). That makes 7 loyal primarchs. The other two could be those from the deleted records (the 2nd and 11th legions). Makes it even more interesting to know what happened to the two legions if their primarchs count as surviving loyalists though.... The other possibility is that Konrad Curze and Alpharius count as survivors, as they did not immediately flee into the eye of terror after the battle, or possibly Lorgar (assuming any traitor Primarchs count towards the total). Note also that the 2nd edition background indicates that of those 9 primarchs, all of them had died (or disappeared?) after 1400 years (of being created, presumably). Their remains have since become relics, particularly the tomb of Roboute Guilliman. Rumours exist of the possibility that Lemann Russ, Ferrus Manus, and Lion El' Jonson will return some day, of course... At least five of the Traitor Primarchs have gone on to become Daemon Princes (Fulgrim, Angron, Mortarion, Magnus the Red, Perturabo). Konrad Curze is the only traitor Primarch to be confirmed dead (by an Assassin) according to background in the 2nd Edition Chaos codex and the 3rd edition Assassin codex, though he was probably killed after the heresy, not during. That leaves Lorgar and Alpharius presumably still alive at the end of the Heresy, but whether they are daemon princes or have expired since then is not known. Perhaps they will be covered in the Index Astartes articles in the future... THE ISSTVAN V DROP SITE MASSACRES According to various backgrounds (which all agree on this point), Horus had Five Legions that had sided with him (and against the Emperor) before the Isstvan V event. Seven legions were sent against him at Isstvan V- Four of which changed sides and joined Horus, the other Three of which were completely destroyed. So how does it break down?
OBSOLETE INFORMATION According to background in First Edition Space Marine (SM1ed.), the original 5 were Sons of Horus, World Eaters, Emperor's Children, Death Guard, and Thousand Sons. The ones sent against them (and who summarily defected) were the Word Bearers, Night Lords, Iron Warriors, and the Alpha Legion. The remaining 3 sent were reported as "Purged from the records", being the ones completely wiped out. However, this information already conflicts with more current background in a number of places, the most notable being the 3 "purged records", as the current index of 20 chapters only has 2 purged chapters listed. ORIGINAL 5 TRAITOR LEGIONS Obviously, Horus' own legion is included (Sons of Horus). According to the 2nd (and 3rd) edition Chaos codexes, the Death Guard, Alpha Legion, and the Word Bearers and the Thousand Sons all turned traitor prior to the Isstvan V event. This conflicts with more recent background however, in the Index Astartes article on the Iron Warriors (WD Issue 255) which states: The Thousand Sons (since they were attacked by the Space Wolves before Isstvan V), Sons of Horus, World Eaters (whom Horus was sent to subdue before Isstvan V, and he recruits them instead), Death guard, and the Emperor's Children (who tried to persuade Horus against rebellion at the start of Isstvan V, but were then turned by Horus). 4 LEGIONS JOIN HORUS AT ISSTVAN V The Iron Warriors themselves are specifically said to turn at Isstvan V. They were to join 6 other legions to face Horus, specifically the Night Lords, Word Bearers, and Alpha Legion, with whom they joined to wipe out the other 3 legions in the task force that remained loyal. The Night Lords are stated to have gone renegade before the Horus Heresy even broke out, so their alliance with Horus at Isstvan V was merely a formality. 3 LEGIONS WIPED OUT My original assumption was that two of the three Legions destroyed at Isstvan V are the ones Deleted from Records (Number 2 and 11). However, in the Iron Hands Index Astartes article (WD 261), it is clearly stated that Ferrus Manus and his veterans spearheaded the attack on Horus' forces along with 2 other Legions (and later refers to the Salamanders and Raven Guard legions). However, this is in contradiction with the statements made prior that the three loyal legions were COMPLETELY destroyed, since all three of these chapters are currently operational! Since only a small force of Iron Hands could get to Isstvan V in time, the rest of the Legion survived the massacre, carrying on to this day and yielding successor chapters. The Salamanders continue on (though they have no successor chapters!)- Vulkan survived the heresy according to the background in Codex: Armageddon (under the Black Templars of all places), so it was possible for the Salamanders to be built back up from almost nothing if need be. But we won't know more about the fate of the Raven Guard (and their successor chapters) until July 2002...
