VERBI PRESENT SIMPLE Soggetto + infinito senza to ( I make) Alle terza persona singolare il verbo aggiunge la desinenza s (He

makes) MA : nei verbi che terminano in x, -ch, -sh, -ss, si aggiunge es I verbi che terminano in y preceduta da consonante, cambiano la y in ies (I study-He studies), ma non quelli che terminano in y preceduta da vocale (I play- He plays) Eccezioni : to do (he does) e to go (he goes) NON prendono la s gli ausiliari (can, will,shall, might,.) Forma negativa : Soggetto + dont (doesnt per la terza persona) + infinito senza to (e SENZA s!!) Forma interrogativa : Do (Does per la terza persona) + soggetto + infinito senza to ? USO: 1) per esprimere azioni di routine quotidiana, abitudini o azioni che si ripetono (I sleep 9 hours every night- routine quotidiana / I play football in my free time abitudine) 2)per esprimere situazioni definitive (I live in London) 3)per esprimere situazioni che sono comunque sempre vere (There are 24 hours in a day) Espressioni temporali che si possono trovare con il Present Simple: everyhour/day/week/month/summer/year,-usually-always-every morning/evening/afternoon/night,..-in the morning/evening/night,-at night,.. PRESENT CONTINUOUS Soggetto +am/is/are + verbo in ing (Im working) Forma in ing :i verbi che terminano in-e, perdono la e e prendono ing (To makemaking/ To come-coming,..) I monosillabi e polisillabi con accento sulla sillaba finale che terminano in consonante, la raddoppiano prima di ing (To swim-swimming, to put-putting,To prefer-preferring,to begin-beginning,..) I verbi che terminano in y, aggiungono ing (To play-playing,..) MA : i verbi in ie, cambiano la ie in ying (Yto lie-lying, to die-dying-to tie-tying,. I verbi che terminano in y preceduta da consonante, cambiano la y in ied (To study-I studied), quelli che terminano in y preceduta da vocale aggiungono ed (To enjoy- I.enjoyed) I monosillabi e polisillabi che terminano in consonante, con accento sullultima consonante, raddoppiano la consonante finale (To stop-I stopped / To prefer-I preferred,..) USO : 1) per azioni che sono avvenute o completate in un periodo determinato del passato (I bought a new house last year) 2) per azioni che si ripetevano nel passato ma non avvengono pi, quasi sempre con avverbi di frequenza (He usually played football in his free time / significa che ora non gioca pi) Espressioni temporali che si usano con il Past Simple : yesterday-last night/week/year/winter,.. a month/two years/three days etc ago- in 1940, PRESENT PERFECT Soggetto + have/has + participio passato. Il participio passato nei verbi regolari si forma come il Past Simple, nei verbi irregolari la terza forma del paradigma (To drink-drank-drunk / to buy-boughtbought) Forma negativa : Soggetto + have/has + not + participio passato. Forma interrogativa : Have/Has + soggetto + participio passato. USO : 1) per azioni avvenute nel passato, in un tempo indeterminato (Tom has broken his arm non detto quando)

2) per azioni che sono iniziate nel passato e continuano ad avere luogo nel presente ( I have been a teacher since 1980) 3) per azioni che sono finite recentemente le cui conseguenze si vedono nel presente ( I have painted the kitchen) 4) per parlare di unesperienza fatta (He has travelled through Europe) Espressioni temporali che si usano con il Present Perfect : for (per esprimere durata),since (per indicare quando iniziata unazione), just e already (in frasi affermative), yet (nelle domande e nelle negazioni),lately, recently, so far, ever, NB Per il verbo to go: John and Ann ave gone to London (si trovano ancora l) John and Ann have been to London (ci sono stati, ma ne sono tornati) PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS Soggetto + have/has + been + verbo in ing Forma negativa : Soggetto + have/has + not + been +verbo in ing Forma interrogativa : Have/Has + soggetto +been + verbo in ing USO : 1) per unazione iniziata nel passato e che continua nel presente (She has been typing letters for three hours sta ancora scrivendo) 2) per unazione che finita recentemente, i cui risultati si vedono nel presente (Im tired. Ive been working for nine hours) Espressioni temporali che si usano con il Present Perfect Continuous: for, since, all morning/afternoon/night/day/week, PAST CONTINUOUS Soggetto + was/were + verbo in ing Forma negativa: Soggetto + was/were + not + verbo in ing Forma interrogativa : Was/Were + soggetto + verbo in ing USO : 1) per descrivere unazione passata che aveva luogo in un periodo determinato, di cui per non si sa quando iniziata e quando finita (At five oclock yesterday I was cooking dinner non dico quando ho iniziato n quando ho finito, solo che a quellora svolgevo quellazione) 2) per descrivere unazione che si svolgeva nel passato quando stata interrotta da unaltra : la prima (longer action) si esprime con il past continuous, la

seconda (shorter action) si esprime con il Past Simple (She was having breakfast when the phone rang) 3) per descrivere due azioni contemporanee che avevano luogo nel passato (Tina was doing the washing-up while the children were playing in the garden) 4) per descrivere azioni che precedevano gli eventi principali di una storia (The sun was shining brightly as Tom was driving his brand new car through the city center.) Espressioni temporali che si usano con il Past Continuous : while, when, as, NB when/while/as + Past Continuous (longer action)- when + Past simple (shorter action) PAST PERFECT SIMPLE Soggetto + had + participio passato (vedi sopra per la forma) Forma negativa : Soggetto + had + not + participio passato Forma interrogativa . Had + soggetto + participio passato USO :
1) per unazione avvenuta nel passato prima di unaltra azione anchessa passata.

Per lazione avvenuta prima si usa il Past Perfect simple e per lazione avvenuta dopo si usa il Past Simple. (He had already cooked when I invited him for dinner) 2) come tempo equivalente al passato del Present Perfect Simple. Cio, il Past Perfect Simple si usa per unazione che stata iniziata e compiuta nel passato, mentre il Present Perfect Simple si usa per unazione che nonostante sia iniziata nel passato, finita nel presente. (Greg wasnt at home. He had gone out- significa che era fuori nel momento in cui lho cercato/ Greg isnt at home. He has gone out significa che fuori adesso) Espressioni temporali che si usano con il Past Perfect Simple: already, by the time,never, as soon as , just, after, when, IMPERATIVO Per la seconda persona singolare e plurale, limperativo dato dallinfinito senza to (Get out! = esci/uscite Shut up! = stai zitto/ state zitti,) Per la prima persona plurale: Let + us (contratto in s) + infinito senza to (Lets go! = Andiamo)

FUTURO Il futuro si pu rendere in vari modi a seconda delle situazioni: 1)con il Present Simple : per tabelle orarie (The plane takes off at 11 am) per azioni future senza avverbi si tempo (I call you) 2)con il Present Continuous :per esprimere una decisione, un appuntamento, cose sicure in un futuro immediato e con i verbi di moto (Im going to the doctor tomorrow / Im watching TV tonight /Im flying to London next week) 3)con To be going to + infinito senza to Soggetto + am/is/are + going + to + infinito Forma negativa: Soggetto + am/is/are + not + going + to +infinito Forma interrogativa : am/is/are + soggetto + going + to + infinito Per esprimere progetti, intenzioni, cose che stanno per avvenire, per evidenziare (Im going to buy a new car / Its going to rain ) 4)Soggetto + will (spesso contratto inll)+ infinito senza to (chiamato Future Simple) Forma negativa : Soggetto + will + not (contratto spesso in wont) + infinito Forma interrogativa :Will + soggetto + infinito? Per esprimere previsioni su ci che si crede o immagina (spesso preceduto da I think), per le on-the-spot-decisions, per offrire di fare qualcosa (I think there will be too much traffic in the future/ The phone is ringing:Ill answer it/ Ill call you tomorrow/ Your bag is too heavy:Ill carry it for you) Il Future Simple non pu essere usato dopo le words :before, after, while, until, as soo n as, e when. Al suo posto si usa il Present Simple (Ill wait for you until you finish). La parola WHEN pu essere usata solo se in senso interrogativo (When will he arrive?) 5)con Shall + infinito senza to, solo con la prima persona singolare e plurale (I/We) per invitare,o con il significato di pensi sia una buona idea? (Shall we dance? / Shall we go out for a walk?) 6)Per rendere le ipotetiche di grado 1 (Vedi Ipotetiche)

PASSIVO Soggetto + to be coniugato (AM/IS/ARE/WAS/WERE/HAS BEEN/HAVE BEEN/HAD BEEN/AM BEING/ARE BEING/WAS BEING/WERE BEING) + Participio Passato. Come volgere una frase da attiva a passiva: 1) il complemento oggetto della frase attiva diventa soggetto della frase passiva 2) il verbo si trasforma in forma passiva conservando per lo stesso tempo 3) il soggetto della frase attiva, se presente, si trasforma in complemento dagente introdotto da by. Attiva: Susan made a cake /Passiva:A cake was made by Susan A) Solo I verbi che vengono seguiti da un complemento oggetto (transitivi) possono trasformarsi in forma passiva (Tom watered the plants/The plants were watered by Tom) B) Quando il soggetto di una frase attiva una delle parole seguenti : people,one,someone,somebody,they,he,.., il complemento dagente viene eliminato nella forma passiva. C) Gli object pronouns (me, him, you,) si trasformano in subject pronouns nella forma passiva (She gave me some money/I was given some money). D) Quando il verbo della frase attiva viene seguito da una preposizione, conserva la preposizione anche nella forma passiva ( Someone broke into our house last night/ Our house was broken into last night) USO: La forma passiva si usa quando non si vuole dare enfasi al soggetto che compie lazione, ma allazione stessa. Il complemento dagente si cita solo quando necessario. Di solito non viene citato quando: 1) non si sa chi compie lazione (His car was stolen last night) 2) non interessa da chi viene compiuta (Breakfast will be served at 7:30 am) 3) ovvio da chi viene compiuta (He has been arrested) Alcuni esempi di tempi verbali in forma attiva e corrispondente passiva Present Simple active : He feeds the dog twice a day. passive : The dog is fed twice a day. Past Simple active : He fed the dog yesterday. Passive : The dog was fed yesterday. Present Perfect Simple active : He has fed the dog.

Passive : The dog has been fed. Future Simple active : He will feed the dog. passive : The dog will be fed. Modal active : He should/would/can/might/feed the dog. passive : The dog should/would/can/might/be fed. DISCORSO INDIRETTO (reported speech, stetaments and questions) Il direct speech (discorso diretto), sono le parole precise che sono state pronunciate da qualcuno. La frase che contiene queste parole si trova fra virgolette (I want to help Mary said). Il Reported speech (discorso indiretto) costituisce il significato preciso di ci che stato detto da qualcuno ma NON le parole precise. Nel reported speech non vengono usate le virgolette,e la parola that pu essere usata o meno dopo il verbo introduttivo (Mary said-that- she wanted to help). Quando il verbo introduttivo al Present Tense o quando la frase esprime un dato di fatto che sempre vero, non avviene nessun cambiamento temporale nel reported speech. -Direct speech : She says, I love animals -Reported speech : She says (that) she loves animals. -Direct speech : Rhinos live in eastern and southern Africa, said the teacher. -Reported speech : The teacher said (that) rhinos live in eastern and southern Africa. Per volgere una statement (dichiarazione, cio una frase affermativa o negativa) al reported speech, si usa il verbo say o tell per introdurre la frase. I pronouns (I,you, he,me, you, him,mine, yours,..) e I possessive adjectives (my, your, his,..) cambiano a seconda del significato della frase. -Direct speech : Ed said, I live in Belfast -Reported speech : Ed said (that) he lived in Belfast. Quando il verbo introduttivo al Past Tense, I tempi cambiano come di seguito: Direct speech: I want to go out, he said (Present Simple) Reported speech :He said (that) he wanted to go out (Past Simple) Direct speech : She is playing in the garden, he said (Present Continuous) Reported speech . He said (that) she was playing in the garden (Past Continuous) Direct speech : They have bought a new house, he said (Present Perfect) Reported speech : He said (that) they had bought a new house (Past Perfect)

Direct speech : He sent me flowers, she said (Past Simple) Reported speech : She said (that) he had sent her flowers (Past Perfect) Direct speech :Ill oreder a new fridge, he said (Future Simple). Reported speech : He said (that) he would order a new fridge (Conditional) Alcune parole o espressioni temporali cambiano come di seguito: tonight/that night- today/that day this week,month,../that week, month,.. now/then / at that time yesterday/the day before last night,week,../the previous night,week,.. tomorrow /the following or next day next week, month,.. /the next or following week, month,.. two days,months,..ago /two days,months,..before this,these /that,those. SAY and TELL Il verbo to say si usa al direct o reported speech, con o senza personal pronoun : Tom said, I need some help Tom said (that) he needed some help. Tom said to me, I need some help Tom said to me (that) he needed some help. Il verbo to tell si usa sempre con personal pronoun NON preceduto da to Tom told me (that) he needed some help. REPORTED QUESTIONS Le reported questions (domande indirette) si introducono con il verbo to ask o con lespressione to want to know. Nelle reported questions, il verbo si usa nella forma affermativa, e il punto interrogativo si omette; inoltre I tempi, I pronomi e le espressioni temporali cambiano come succede con le statements. Quando la domanda al direct speech inizia con una question word (who, where, when, why, what,..), anche la reported question inizia con la stessa question word. Direct speech : Where do you live? she asked me Reported speech : She asked me where I lived. Quando la domanda al direct speech una domanda a cui si pu rispondere con yes/no, ed inizia con il verbo ausiliare (do, be,..) o il modal verb (can, will,..), la reported question inizia con la parola if o whether. Direct speech : Have you got a pet? He asked me. Reported speech : He asked me if/whether I had a pet

DIPENDENTI RELATIVE (RELATIVE CLAUSES) I relative pronouns (pronomi relativi) (who, which, that,..) introducono le proposizioni relative (relative clauses). Le proposizioni relative si usano per determinare il sostantivo della frase principale (main clause). I met a woman. Shes from France / I met a woman WHO is from France. Il pronome WHO si usa per riferirsi a persone ( A porter is someone who carries luggage) Il pronome WHICH per riferirsi a cose o animali (A clock is something which shows the time) Il pronome THAT va bene per persone, cose ed animali. Pu essere omesso quando esprime il complementoi oggetto della relativa (The man that-you see is my brother) Lavverbio WHERE si usa quando ci si riferisce a luoghi (This is the hotel where we spent our holidays). Il soggetto di una relativa pu anche essere reso con il verbo in ing : The girl singing (=that who sings) on the stage is my sister SECONDARIE IPOTETICHE 1) Ipotetiche di grado 0 : si usano per esprimere una verit perenne. Inoltre si usano per parlare di qualcosa che si verifica sempre come conseguenza di un altro fatto. Si esprimono con : If + present Simple----,Present Simple If the temperature falls below 0,water turns into ice. Si pu anche usare WHEN al posto di If (If/When the sun shines, snow melts). 2)Ipotetiche di grado 1 : esprimono qualcosa di reale o qualcosa che possibile si verifichi nel presente o nel futuro. Si esprimono con : If + Present Simple----, Future Simple If Tom studies, he will pass the exam. Si usa WHEN quando si sicuri che un fatto si verifichier. When I come to Paris, Ill see you (Sono certo di andare a Parigi) Si usa IF quando non si sicuri che un fatto si verificher. If I come to Paris, Ill see you (Non certo che vada a Parigi) 3) Ipotetiche di grado 2 : esprimono qualcosa di immaginario o che possibile che abbia luogo nel presente o nel futuro.

Si esprimono con : If + Past Simple (=congiuntivo)----,would/could/might + Infinito senza to. If I had more free time, I would take up basketball (ma non ho molto tempo libero, quindi improbabile) Per il verbo essere, si usa WERE per tutte le persone per formare il Past Simple. If I were (e non was) rich, I would travel around the world. La forma If I were you,.. si usa per dare un consiglio. If I were you, I would stop eating junk food. 4) Ipotetiche di grado 3 : si usano per riferirsi ad una situazione del passato che non pu pi essere modificata. Si esprimono con : If + Past Perfect---,would +have + Past Participle. If I had studied much more, I would have passed the exam. Ma se tale situazione passata ha effetti sul presente, si esprime con : If + Past Perfect---,would + infinito senza to If I had studied when I was younger, I would gain more money. IN TUTTI I TIPI DI IPOTETICHE SOPRA CITATI, SI DEVE METTERE LA VIRGOLA FRA IPOTETICA E PRINCIPALE. MA, SE SI INIZIA CON LA PRINCIPALE (INVERSIONE), LA VIRGOLA NON VA MESSA. 5)WISH : Quando vorremmo che si verificasse qualcosa di irrealizzabile nel presente Wish + Past Simple I wish I were you. Al passato si usa solo had to (Why did you have to leave the party early?) c)should si usa per dare consigli, o per esprimere qual la cosa giusta o migliore da fare (spesso segue I think) e per formare il condizionale. Si usa per esprimere abitudini o situazioni del passato che non avvengono pi : NON usare mai al presente! Significa aver bisogno di.. o non necessario che.. Es : You need to study much more / You neednt go to work today /You dont need to go to work today.

QUESTION TAGS Sono brevi domande alla fine delle frasi, per lo pi nel discorso parlato. Si usano quando ci si vuole accertare di qualcosa o quando si vuole sapere se qualcosa sia valido o no. Si formano con il verbo ausiliare o modale della frase principale, al tempo richiesto, insieme al pronome personale adeguato (Mary is cooking, isnt she? / Tom cant play the violin, can he? /He bought a new book, didnt he?) Quando la frase affermativa, la question tag negativa e viceversa.

SHORT ANSWERS Come dice il nome, sono risposte brevi usate per non ripetere tutto il contenuto di una domanda. Si formano con yes o no, seguiti dal soggetto (della risposta) + il verbo essere o avere (se nella domanda ci sono essere o avere), o lausiliare usato o sottinteso nella domanda, al tempo adeguato. ESEMPI: Are you a teacher? Yes, I am./ No, Im not Have you got a new car?Yes, I have/ No, I havent (senza got) Do you have any sister?Yes, I do / No, I dont. Could she play the piano when she was five? No, she couldnt /Yes, she could. Will you be at home this evening? Yes, I will /No, I wont. Would you like something to eat? Yes, I would /No , I wouldnt. Have you ever been to London? Yes, I have /No, I havent. Has the new film by Pollak been seen by a lot of people? Yes, it has /No, it hasnt. Are they allowed to sit down? Yes, they are/ No, they arent.
