aint
over
till
the
fat
lady
sings

The
Magnificat

Mary
and
Elizabeth

This
evening,
 we
are
invited
 to
pause
and
 marvel
at
this
 scene
of
a
 pregnant
virgin
 singing.

The
Magnificat
is
no
gentle
 consoling
lullaby,
but
its
a
feisty
 and
radical
song
of
prophecy.

My
soul
 MAGNIFIES the
Lord

MAGNIFIES To
enlarge
and
to
expand


To
proclaim
the
goodness
of




the
Lord
or
To
praise
God

But
how
can
 anyone
possibly
 make
God
 bigger
or
more
 than
what
He
 already
is?

What
if
we
compare
MARY
 to
a
MAGNIFYING
GLASS?

A
magnifying
glass
doesnt
actually
 make
an
object
bigger,
but
only
 makes
it
appear
bigger.



The
closer
the
 magnifying
glass
 gets
to
an
 object,
the
 larger
it
seems.


To
make
Gods
 presence
less
hidden
 and
more
obvious
in
 this
world
of
ours
by
 drawing
nearer
to
 Him.




The
closer
we
get
to
 God,
the
more
 visible
and
the
more
 obvious
He
will
 become
to
others.


The
Magnificat
 speaks
of
a
 radical
reversal
of
 fortune
in
an
 unjust
world.

He
has
shown
the
strength
of
his
arm,
 and
has
scattered
the
proud
in
their
 conceit. He
has
cast
down
the
mighty
from
their
 thrones,
and
has
lifted
up
the
lowly.

Mary
enumerates
 accomplishments
of
 her
UNBORN
child

Blessed
is
she
who
believed.



Mary
utters
 her
prophecies
 as
if
they
 were
already
 history.

To
act
as
if
Gods
Will
has
already
 been
completely
fulfilled,
so
that
 we
too
may
become
instruments
 in
bringing
about
His
Will.

It
was,
in
fact,
far
from
the
best
 of
times
for
Mary
as
well.

It
is
now,
more
 than
ever in
times
far
from
 best that
we
need
to
 hear
Marys
 Magnificat.

To
believe
the
way
 Mary
believed.
 To
act
and
live
our
 lives
as
if
its
all
 already
history.
