South African Jewish Museum Client: Kaplan Trust 1999-2001 Design of the reinforced concrete structure supported on Franki Piles. Most notably, conceptual and detail design of the 8,60 m, 5,55m high helical staircase, which completes 1 1 / 4 revolutions whilst being supported only at its ends. The staircase is the central architectural feature of the museum. The detailing of the support sections presented a particular challenge, due to the high vertical and torsional shear stresses prevalent there, as well as significant M x-x and M y-y moments. The section varies in depth from 650mm at its supports, to 350mm at the midspan sections. The cross section is trapezoidal, in order to maintain the position of its centroid as close as possible to the axis of the staircase. Design to SABS 0160, South African equivalent to BS8110.

Richards Bay Berth 306 Client: Portnet 1999 Design of Richards Bay Berth 306 (Coal Quay) extension. Due to the success of the pre- tensioned composite superstructure of Richards Bay Dry Bulk Jetty, this structure was designed with identical pre-fabricated elements. The main structural differences, however, are that Berth 306 comprises a single 21 m span, berthing forces are resisted by a system of large diameter composite raking piles, the piles themselves are friction piles as opposed to end bearing piles and Berth 306 required a service tunnel along the cope face. Design to BS 5400 and SATS Harbour Manual.
Richards Bay Berth 708 Client: Portnet 1998 Design and tender documents for Berth 708 extension at Richards Bay, comprising a steel combination sheet pile wall with a free height of 14 m tied back with 42 m long 110 mm anchor rods, which in turn are connected to a combination sheet pile dead man wall. The combination sheet pile wall of the retaining structure comprises 1 600 mm, 20 mm thick steel tubes at 3 m c/c with Larsen sheet pile profiles between them (L3S). The total length of the tubes is 21 m. The dead man combination sheet pile wall comprises 1 200 mm, 16 mm thick steel tubes at 1,5 m c/c with Larssen L3S sheet piles between them. The length of the dead man wall is 7 m. Design to BS 5400 and SATS Harbour Manual.

11 1997-1999 Design and tender documents for the dry bulk terminal jetty and conveyor gallery at the Port of Richards Bay. - Overall Length : 343,5 m - Overall Width : 67,0 m - Completion - end 1999 - Foundations : 1 829 mm and 1 219 mm cased piles, up to 70 m long with a free height of 22,0 m, excavated and concreted under polymer. Berthing forces are resisted through pile flexure. Reinforced concrete pile caps measuring 2,50 x 2,50 x 0,59 m - Superstructure : Composite concrete deck consisting of 1,70 m deep pre-tensioned T- beams, spanning 21 m and weighing 55T acting compositely with a 350 mm thick in-situ deck slab. There are three 21 m spans, which are partially continuous for dead load. The T-beams are in turn supported by and monolithically connected to 2,0 m deep pre- tensioned spine beams weighing 60T and spanning 10 m between the piles. The spine beams rest on the pile caps. The pile cap to spine beam connection is pinned in a longitudinal direction to allow for settlement differentials and temperature movements, while being rigid transversely in order to allow moment transfer from the deck to the piles for the purposes of resisting berthing forces. Design to BS 5400 and SATS Harbour Manual.
