2 Welcome

Welcome to Henley ....in Germany!

Are you interested in a distance learning MBA programme of worldwide recognition which not only scores highly in all the important international rankings, but which is also accredited by AMBA, AACSB and EQUIS? With the following document we hope to provide you with all the necessary information to convince you of the benefits of the Executive MBA programme of Henley Management College. Henley was the pioneer among MBA providers in the German market. In 1989 they started a successful cooperation with the Gesellschaft zur Frderung der Weiterbildung an der Universitt der Bundeswehr Mnchen e.V. in brief gfw. e.V. and have subsequently provided many executives with the necessary tools for new and attractive carer paths. Since the start of the partnership almost 400 executives have successfully completed the programme and the majority of them have as a result built impressive careers in various industries. The Henley MBA programme differentiates itself from others through its immediate implementation, which is why it is only open to executives and those with many years of management experience. It also exhibits an international content as a result of Henleys network of cooperation partners, as well as an extensive e-learning platform and support through dedicated personal tutors. An implicit emphasis is thereby also placed on the development of executives as personalities. With a background of twenty years experience as apost-graduate education provider, the gfw supports programme members intensively through all the stages of their learning journey. All of the Henley workshops and exams are held in Munich. By corresponding interest, the gfw can offer from its broad portfolio an optimal programme of supplementary courses. Henley has delivered a proven formula for career success over the last 60 years. And as the German partner in the Henley family, we look forward to welcoming you into this exiting network. Prof. Dr. Rainer Marr Chairman of the Board of gfw

3 Welcome

Our job is to develop managers and leaders to make the right choices for themselves, their organisations and their wider communities.
This marks the difference between Henley and our competitors. We focus exclusively on executives and aspiring executives who know that management and leadership is a series of dilemmas, and when faced with a dilemma you have to make a choice. People who come to Henley know we understand the dilemmas facing managers today and we help them formulate the most appropriate answers for themselves rarely are there textbook answers to real problems. This distinction shows itself most starkly in the people you will work alongside when you come here. Our graduates want to fulfil their potential in the company of like-minded professionals in an environment that is anything but average. We are proud to work with mature, experienced managers 98% of whom are at work and most aged in their mid-30s. Its not just about being book-learned. Life experience is just as important. Thats reflected in the networks and our world-class reputation. We dont teach undergraduates or admit graduates with little or no experience. As a result we are a magnet for all those who want to change how management is practised today. They are at a point in their careers where they can apply their own experience to the knowledge we bring and put what they learn into practice immediately. Our location is also perfect. Near to London and major transport links, yet in an exquisite setting on the River Thames amongst 30 acres of beautiful parkland. Its an ideal environment for both quiet reflection and stimulating debate with other developing business minds. The Henley Executive MBA is a passport to your future welcomed worldwide as a leading business and management qualification. After all, great leaders are those who apply the science of business to the art of management and do so with the interests of more than just themselves in mind. A Henley Executive MBA gives you the opportunity to build your capability in both the science and the art.

Profile John Glazebrook

I achieved
John Glazebrook is in the thick of things. No specific job title, fast-changing responsibilities and the everyday task of managing chaos. After six years as an officer in the British Army serving in Northern Ireland, Africa and Bosnia, John now works as an adviser on the civilian and peace building elements of post-conflict stabilisation. He sees business management skills as essential in dealing with post-war zones or disaster efforts. We live in a global village now, with a strong international community and a sense of global responsibility. Thats prompted the rapid rise of response organisations and severe management challenges. Ive seen such bad management in some of these situations because the skills are just not there. He chose the Henley MBA because of its practical, transferable skills. For him, the programme is most valuable in developing knowledge and skills in policy management, strategic planning and implementation. We need performance measurement in international aid situations solid business measurement and a straightforward analysis of return on investment. People give huge volumes of money to relief funds. They deserve to know exactly what is being done with it.

I wanted a Henley MBA because I needed a qualification with international resonance, a name that had an international reputation. I already had ten years experience and wasnt attracted to business schools with recent graduates. This is a senior MBA. The average age on my intake is 38, and Im impressed at the range and experience of my classmates. There are entrepreneurs, engineers, someone whos set up their own IT business, a sales director and all have open minds looking to learn from each other. John Glazebrook

REASONS TO DO A HENLEY EXECUTIVE MBA

We were the first business school established in the UK and one of the first in Europe. We were established by business for business. Henley is independent. Were not linked to any university, so are not driven by anyone elses curriculum or research agenda. The Henley Executive MBA is an international career passport, recognised all over the world. Were distinctive, only taking experienced executives. Career insurance for Mika

Mika Makkonen from Finland has experienced a fast career move in the insurance industry helped most recently by completing an Executive MBA with Henley. Mika started working for Tapiola Insurance Group in 1991 as a lawyer. In 1998 he moved to the Finland branch of Zurich Insurance where he worked as a Casualty Manager. Wanting to become more involved with international operations in the insurance business, he also embarked on his MBA studies at Henley. After graduating, he was promoted as Group Insurance Manager, moving with his family to the Zurich Insurance Company headquarters in Zurich. Two years later, in 2006, the Tapiola Insurance Group offered him a demanding new post as a Unit Director of International Operations a role that would enable him to fully use his knowledge of international business operations. Mika says that his Henley Executive MBA programme gave him a better understanding of key elements of the business environment and how to solve the dilemmas he faced as a manager. He has consistently found that the management tools learned have stood him in good stead since graduation.

In particular, the international approach was very interesting and the case studies made it easy to adapt issues from a theoretical level to an operational one. It was an important part of my own idea of a lifetime learning process.

A qualified leader
Jim Mather came to Henley in 2001 with extensive business expertise. A qualified accountant by profession he had 15 years business management experience ranging from Chief Executive of the Pacific Business Trust based in Auckland, to Financial Controller for a local subsidiary of a Swiss multi-national. He also had six years experience in the New Zealand Army and received the Sword of Honour award in 1986 after graduating top of the Armys 12-month officer training course. Jim was careful to choose the best MBA programme for him, and this led to an extensive search for the right qualification from the right institution. After reviewing the various MBAs on offer, I selected the Henley programme primarily because it is an internationally recognised and highly prestigious Executive MBA with a strong practical orientation. Jim credits Henley as being a major factor in opening a wide range of career options indeed, just a few months after graduating from his Henley MBA programme, he became Chief Executive of Maori Television in New Zealand. I am particularly honoured in my new position as Maori TV has a special role in inspiring all New Zealanders to value and embrace our Maori culture and heritage, he says.

It has given me the confidence to lead organisations in a variety of different industries and it has greatly enhanced my professional development.

REASONS NOT TO DO A HENLEY EXECUTIVE MBA

I want to do my current job for the rest of my life. I dont need a better job or better prospects. I see nothing exciting on the horizon, and thats the way I like it. I have enough respect from my peers. They support my decision to stay where I am, while they rise up the ranks. My sector is secure. A leading faculty
Henleys faculty members are essential to bring the rigour we need for our teaching. Yet Henley is not an ivory tower. Henley people whether academics or practitioners are well-rounded individuals. They represent global expertise in commercial, public and voluntary sectors. They are international, both by passport and by experience.

Our academics thrive on real life research questions; our practitioners have vast experience in the real world of work. Combined they bring specialist insight to the business challenges they teach, complementing each others work and organising teaching and research around business challenges that matter rather than traditional academic disciplines. They also share great passion for knowledge, teaching in ways that help managers learn best (after all, who wants to be lectured at?). Our faculty also publish for other academics and for practitioners just like you.

Decisions, decisions

The central principle of Henley is that management at any level is a series of dilemmas and when youre faced with a dilemma, you have to make a choice. Our job is to prepare you to make the right choices. There are no right or wrong answers just actions based on the information you have at any given moment. But there are implications of your choice for you, for your organisation and for others in the wider community. The right choice therefore is a responsible one and thats a theme we explore a lot in our MBA programme.

The best thing I learned

its not just about the MBA. Its also about the people you meet through Henley. The modular study option was always appealing to me as I could benefit from the other students wide experiences and management knowledge in an interactive environment. Theres a lot to be gained from the collective experience of a group of people like this as it helps broaden what you learn from theory to practical application. I certainly keep in contact with my immediate MBA group. We meet regularly and strong friendships have formed. Lynette Anne Morrison MBA Managing Director, Visual Information Limited

Henley gave me the tools to change my management career from psychiatric nursing to security training. Our values, your future

What do you learn at Henley? Certainly you receive a world-renowned management education. Yet a Henley Executive MBA also equips you with a sophisticated sense of business values and the confidence to solve management dilemmas. Its a unique way of learning that is tied to our individual way of thinking. Henley itself has charitable status and a strong philanthropic vision threaded through everything we do. For example from our early days we were pioneers of the social market concept, arguing that industrial welfare was the only successful business model under modern conditions. For us right from the outset character and integrity were as important in a manager as capability. Our value structures today are equally as strong. First, we want individuals and organisations to succeed in management development ventures for the greater good of society. Enhanced management capabilities have a positive ripple effect. They create greater economic and social wealth, build and sustain world class public services and private companies, and allow individuals to benefit from their success. Without the wealth generated by business, our community would be a far less attractive and positive place in which to live. Second we believe there is an ethical context to organisational management. The Henley experience prizes integrity. Its not about moral certainty but a recognition that some actions are both more effective and more ethical than others. This is why we define our core purpose as developing managers to make the right choices. Leading an organisation is all about the choices you make. Our Principal is fond of quoting Harry Potters headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, who says: It is our choices that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities. For leaders today thats a choice that needs to be right for the person, the organisation, and the society within which that organisation exists. Come and meet us!

See the Henley difference Before you decide on a Henley Executive MBA, we encourage you to come and meet us. The College holds events all over the world from MBA fairs to events designed to help you choose the best way of learning. One person who did just that was Andrew Harburn, who is now studying on our Executive Modular MBA: Attending the Henley Preview day was absolutely key in helping me reach my conclusions regarding my MBA options. I could see how the Henley Executive Modular MBA programme compared to the Distance Learning and Evening MBA formats. The following events are held in London and Henley. For international events please contact Henley in your country. MBA Portfolio Events - cover various MBA study modes and outline facilities and support available on all programmes. Contrast different study modes and choose the ideal one for you. Preview Day an opportunity to visit the College, learn about study modes, see facilities, meet current students and alumni and experience a taster lecture from a faculty member. Information Seminars focus on a particular Executive MBA study mode e.g. Evening (London), Distance Learning (Henley), Full Time (Henley) and Modular (Henley). MBA Fairs held in the UK and globally, these are great opportunities to meet Henley staff and discuss programmes. Personal consultations come and see us at Henley for a personal visit and tour of our facilities. See www.henleymc.ac.uk/mba for a full list of global events.

We live here too

Henley teaches corporate social responsibility, and we practise it too in our responsible attitude to the environment. Just two examples of this commitment are: We protect our riverbank with a wall of natural matting, guarding against boat wash and creating a perfect habitat for juvenile fish, dragon flies and water voles. We are becoming a carbon neutral institution by supporting the Climate Care organisation to fund sustainable energy projects and rainforest restoration around the world.

Willkommen to Henley alumni in Germany

Germany is one of the main economic powers in Europe, and Henley Management College has been delivering Executive MBAs here for over 16 years. We were one of the first MBA providers to be based in this country. Thanks to this early entry into the German market we now boast a large and active Henley Alumni Association, which is in turn linked to the worldwide Henley Alumni Organisation with its membership of over 30,000. Germanys alumni organisation has three goals: To build trustworthy relationships To allow effective personal career development for alumni To help members leverage their personal networks. Central to delivering these aims is the German alumni website, www.ha-g.de. This information and communication platform allows members to search for other alumni, find jobs, advertise vacancies at no cost and keep up to date on alumni news. It also advertises the alumni event programme. In addition to industryspecific and regional networking opportunities, there are two major events organised each year. These include presentations from a wide range of business leaders from leading recruitment consultants and business angels to captains of industry and successful alumni. Recent examples have included seminars on innovation and HR, and an event organised with Siemens entitled Fit4More Strategy of a Global Player. The great news is that all these advantages are immediately available to every new member of the Henley Executive MBA programme as they become associated members of the alumni organisation from day one of the programme.

Potential rewards
The Henley Executive MBA is an excellent pathway to more demanding positions and higher levels of responsibilities and opportunities. Most of the members of our MBA alumni have now risen to the top of their companies. What does that mean for salaries? Having an MBA certainly improves your financial prospects. The Association of MBAs says salaries have risen consistently over the past decade for graduates from accredited programmes. However, a Henley MBA can lead to even greater financial rewards. According to the Financial Times, Henley ranks amongst the top ten business schools in Europe for post-graduate salaries as well as top salary percentage increases for those completing our Executive Modular MBA.*
