FESTIVITIES: You dont have to break the bank to have a great holiday party. There are many affordable options
available to make your party run smoothly. (Courtesy Photos)
STATEPOINT MEDIA
Hosting a holiday party can be fun and a great
way to get together with friends you may not see as
often as you like. However, some people may shy
away from hosting, afraid the hectic planning or
cost will be too much.
But you dont have to break down or go broke to
host a stylish holiday party this year.
Following a few simple tips can ensure a party
thats fun for you and your guests.
Play to your strengths
Consider decorating with whats readily avail-
able. Got a great collection of candles? Now is the
time to use them. For an especially stunning effect
choose only one color, such as white or cream, for
all linens, serve ware and dcor. Add a dash of spar-
kle and youre all set. If you need to borrow serving
pieces to round out a buffet or dinner table, just ask
family or a close friend.

Tyler Bennett, Co President of the senior
class at Tri County High School and a friend
were shopping for families registered with the
community sharing project Adopt-A-Fam-
ily. Having in hand the familys tags bearing
gender and age, interest and needs, plus the
monetary donations of the community, the
students began purchasing gifts for the fami-
lies. Before taking a respite on Friday night,
the students placed toys and other gifts on lay
away with plans to return Saturday morning
to complete their purchases.
After taking account of purchases and
needs and matching families and gifts, the
students returned to K Mart in Greenville to
pay for and pick up their lay away. Much to
their surprise and delight, they were told their
lay away was paid off! A phenomenon known
as the lay away angels that began at a K Mart
in Grand Rapids has touched our Village of
Howard City. It is a wondrous thing to hear of
someone wanting to make Christmas a happy
day for many children across the states and
is so much appreciated here in our county.
Thank you, anonymous donor and Merry
Christmas.

Short days and cooler weather can be a
stressful time of year, especially for older peo-
ple who are at higher risk for common winter
ailments. But there are steps you can take to
stay safe and healthy.
Prevent the flu
Its not too late to get vaccinated!
Seniors are at especially high risk for devel-
oping complications from the fu. According to
Flu.gov, ninety percent of fu-related deaths
and more than half of fu-related hospitaliza-
tions occur in people aged 65 and older.
So do your best to avoid getting it in the
frst place. Get vaccinated. The fu vaccine
is widely available this year and free under
Medicare.
Always remember to wash your hands

Village at MCC
SIDNEY The Story of Heritage
Village: Celebrating 25 Years, shares
the history of Montcalm Heritage Vil-
lage as told by dozens of area resi-
dents.
Located on Montcalm Community
Colleges Sidney campus, the village
was established in 1987. Through the
years, it has grown to include 26 build-
ings and hundreds of artifacts from the
local areas depicting life in Michigan
in the turn of the 20th Century. A walk
through Heritage Village takes visitors
on a journey through the past.
The Story of Heritage Village: Cel-
ebrating 25 Years, was written by Gary
Hauck, MCC Dean of Instruction and
Faculty who also works as a liaison be-
tween the Heritage Village Committee
and MCC.
This is not simply a story of build-
ings, amazing as they are, Hauck said.
This is a story about people those
who lived in and among these struc-
tures in days gone by, and those who
have labored to reconstruct and pre-
serve them, and bring them to life.
It is the fabric of these individual
narratives that has been woven togeth-
er to make The Story of Heritage Vil-
lage, he said.
The Story of Heritage Village: Cele-
brating 25 Years, is available for $15.95
at the MCC Bookstore, located in the
Activities Building on the colleges Sid-

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
For the people, by the people
doesnt apply to Reynolds
Township
TO THE EDITOR:
In October, I wrote a letter to the editor explaining
my plight after I had purchased an 18 acre farm here.
Shortly after I bought some chickens and few pigs, I got
a visit from Mr. Dejong the township zoning adminis-
trator. He informed me I wasnt allowed to have farm
animals. He said that even though it had been a work-
ing farm the property had gone through bankruptcy
between the last owner and me, so my farm status was
now invalid. I asked him about my options and said I
could apply for a variance, but that my chances were
zero. At the urging of my neighbors and friends I did
apply for the variance and paid a $450.00 fee. That
meeting with the planning commission was held this
last Thursday.
At the meeting the township hall was full of my sup-
porters and I presented a petition to the board signed
by ALL my adjoining neighbors. In addition, 12 people
spoke in favor of my variance including a former town-
ship offcial. No one spoke against my request. Appar-
ently the people in the township have no voice as the
variance was denied. I do want to thank Art Ross for
his yes vote. I became a taxpayer in the township with
high hopes of being a good neighbor. If the people in
Reynolds Township want to be heard you need to re-
place some members of your township board this com-
ing year.
CHaD MaRTIn
Reynolds Township
Its time citizens of Reynolds
Townsihpget involved
TO THE EDITOR:
Last night I believe I witnessed another loss of our
freedom in Reynolds Township. There was a hearing in
front of the Planning Commission for Chadwick Martin
of 20356 Church Rd. to decide whether to allow him
to continue to have a few chickens and a couple of pigs
on his 18 acre hobby farm. This property is currently
zoned R-2 low Density Residential - in other words, a
rural community. The previous owner had agricultural
animals on this property but for reasons unknown they
lost the property and it was returned to the bank. Mr.
Martin now resides there. He purchased a few pigs and
some chickens and started cleaning and fxing the place
up. He was then told he was in violation of a zoning or-
dinance and had to get rid of the animals. In response,
he requested a variance. At the meeting to consider
this variance, there was no objection raised either in
writing or in person and his neighbors and community
were there in full support.
The supporters brought to the Commissions at-
tention that there were animals on this property in the
past and that it was purchased with the understanding
that it would remain a hobby/working farm. Mr. Mar-
tin has improved this property and made it an asset to
the community. Also, there are other properties in this
community that have agricultural animals. The plan-
ning commission responded that he could have horses
on this property (which is an agricultural animal) but
not pigs and chickens! So whats the difference? Also,
why would it not be grandfathered in since there had
been agricultural animals on this property before?
The Commission chose not to support the request,
giving the following reasons: because the property sat
idle for more than a year, the grandfather clause is void;
the place was in disrepair when it was purchased; the
zoning does not support anything other than domestic
animals and horses; it was also suggested that the taxes
are behind; and the Commission had to follow the ordi-
nance and take nothing else into consideration.
I am disappointed that the Commissioners voted
not to recommend the request for a variance. The Plan-
ning Commission had the authority to grant or recom-
mend a variance. The fact that the property sat idle for
more than a year could have been because of the time
it took to purchase the property and Mr. Martin should
not be penalized for this. It is also very disturbing that
the Commission is unwilling to consider the wishes of
the community who supported Mr. Martins request for
a variance - there were no objections other than from
the members of the Commission.
I believed we should give Mr. Martin and others
like him our support and make our views known to our
Township. We must get involved in the governing of
our community before something like this happens to
you or your neighbors.

Another cat tragedy
TO THE EDITOR:
On Friday, Dec. 5th we were driving on Cutler Rd.,
west of Green Rd., when we saw several cats huddled
against the cold on the side of the road. My friend and
I turned around to get a box to put them in and take
to a shelter, since they were friendly and looked like
house cats. A minivan turned and headed back toward
the cats. Thinking she had the same idea, we continued
on our way. Later, we passed by that way and didnt see
any of the cats. The next day, driving by we discovered
these cats, all dead, we thought. I couldnt stand the
thought of them left to rot, so I came back to pick up
the bodies. It looked like they were shot with a small
caliber weapon. Three were next to each other with a
calico about 25 feet away and a black and white far-
ther off - maybe shot on the run? Hearing a meow I
was a small Torti run across the road. After dropping
off the bodies at home, we came back with a crate. She
came up to us, purring, as we put her into the crate.
By Monday, we spotted another black and white, with
seven toes on each front foot. We thought that was all,
but, then picked up another smaller black and white.
Another one was spotted, but, we havent been able to
catch/rescue it.
Out total cat count so far, is at nine: fve dead and
four alive and one still out there. To whomever killed
these cats - was this fun for you? A test of your accuracy
at shooting? If it was a mercy killing, why not dispose
of the bodies instead of leaving a gruesome sight for
everyone to see?
These appeared to be adoptable cats, clean, friendly
and relatively healthy. By the time we got them home,
they were hungry and severely dehydrated. Well be
taking these cats to the Montcalm County Animal Shel-
ter, where a report has been fled. If youre missing any
of these cats, there are pictures of the dead ones at Dr.
Lepleys offce in Howard City, where the survivors
have been checked out.
A fnal thought: a lot of adult, abusive crime starts
out as animal abuse and cruelty. If youre responsible
for this or know who is, seek help immediately.

Upcoming Marriages
Mike DeBoer of Holland and Lauren DeLange of Grant
James Otten of Howard City and Nicole Moxley of St. Jo-
seph
Joe and Cassie Davis of Sidney became the
parents of a baby boy at Carson City Hospital. Brady
Joseph was born at 8:57pm on Dec. 5, 2011. He
weighed 6 pounds, 8 ounces and was 21 inches
long. Grandparents are Mike and Cheryl Hadley of
Edmore, Murray and Karen Potes of Sparta and Pat
Davis of Sparta.
And dont be afraid to employ secret elves
as a way to lighten the load. Many caterers
offer a pick-up or drop-off service for hors
doeuvres. Cook the dishes you make well and
then supplement them with food from a ca-
terer. This way, you can still enjoy the com-
pliments on your cooking, but you wont be
spending quality mingling time in the kitch-
en.
Simplify and save
Most experienced hosts know the value
of minimalism. When deciding on food or
drinks go simple but with a unique twist. For
example, serve sodas, one red wine, one white
wine and a signature cocktail with a unique
base, such as Dumante, the world`s only pis-
tachio liqueur. A simple martini takes on new
sophistication with two parts vodka, one part
Dumante and a lemon peel garnish.
Or shake equal parts vanilla vodka, dark
creme de cacao and Dumante in a cocktail
shaker with ice and pour through a strainer
into a martini glass. Sprinkle with cinnamon
to add a bit more elegance. For more ideas,
visit www.dumante.com. Add a lasting im-
pression when you give recipe cards of your
signature drink as favors.
Invite a special guest
When gathering people who may not know
each other, it helps to have a person or activity
as a conversation starter. Consider hiring a lo-
cal musician or artist who can entertain your
guests with impromptu songs or sketches.
Or help guests get into the true spirit of
the holidays. In lieu of gifts, guests can bring
canned food for a soup kitchen, wrap toys for
a local shelter or create care packages to send
to troops overseas. By making it fun and easy,
you will naturally infuse the spirit of the sea-
son into your event.
With a little creative thinking, your party
can be the must attend event of the season.

outdoors. Many pharmacies and gro-
cery stores make deliveries these days.
But if a winter wonderland is in your
cards this season, remember to walk
carefully and wear shoes with proper
traction. You might even consider using
a cane for stability.
Those with osteoporosis or weakened
bones are at a higher risk for fractures
from falls. But you can keep your bones
strong by getting plenty of calcium and
vitamin D, avoiding alcohol and ciga-
rettes and getting regular exercise.
Stay Positive
The short days of winter leave many
feeling blue. If you have seasonal affec-
tive disorder, or just a case of the blahs,
you might consider talking to your doc-
tor about light therapy which involves
regular exposure to a bright fuorescent
lamp that mimics natural sunlight. Stay
positive by flling up your social calen-
dar, keeping in regular touch with family
and friends, getting exercise, and listen-
ing to upbeat music.
Stay Warm
Cold weather is dangerous for older
people and those with heart or respira-
tory problems.
Bundle up when you go outside. That
includes a hat, gloves, and a scarf, if nec-
essary.
At home, keep your feet covered with
thick socks. Prepare tea, soup and other
hot foods and beverages. Seal up drafts
in your home with weather-stripping.
And if your muscles feel stiff and your
breathing is slow, call 911 immediately,
as these are signs of hypothermia.
Dont fret the sun will come out
tomorrow. But for now, take care to stay
healthy this season.

STATEPOINT MEDIA
The holidays arent just
for indulging children; family
pets could use some pamper-
ing, too.
In fact, a poll conducted
by Petside.com reported that
53 percent of U.S. pet parents
intended to get their animal
companions a present during
the holidays.
To help you get in the spirit
of the season, here are some
gift ideas for the furry friend
in your life:
n A Holiday Feast. If youre
looking to discourage Fido
from begging for holiday din-
ner scraps, why not get him a
feast of his own? For example,
Stella & Chewys frozen and
freeze-dried Dinners for Dogs
are made of raw, natural meat,
without added hormones or
antibiotics. They also have
freeze-dried Dinners for Cats
with added vitamins, miner-
als, probiotics and just the
right amount of taurine to
keep your kitty healthy.
Or give into Fidos sweet
tooth with an after-dinner
treat, such as Benni & Pennis
fruit-fortified jerky treats.
Featuring a meaty piece of
jerky wrapped around a fruit
morsel, they come in a range
of flavors, including chicken
and kiwi, chicken and banana
and chicken and apple.
n Mistletoe Kisses. Christ-
mas comes but once a year,
but periodontal disease can
threaten dogs and cats at any
time. Fortunately, innovative
solutions -- like TropiCleans
fresh breath made easy! -
- offer safe, natural ways to
keep your pets teeth clean and
healthy while freshening their
breath and without brushing.
n Toys in Petland. Whether
your pets a smarty paws or just
needs an outlet for his extra
energy, there are a number of
toys that let you interact with
him in creative ways. For ex-
ample, the Nina Ottosson Dog
Maze lets dogs discover hid-
den treats in toys that wobble,
rock and spin. And for the ulti-
mate illuminated safety collar,
check out The Company of An-
imals VIVID Collar perfect
for those dark winter walks!
For cats, consider getting
a holiday-themed, biodegrad-
able corrugated scratcher.
For example, Imperial Cats
Scratch n Shapes scratch-
ers are creatively designed to
complement practically any
dcor. Their simulated tree
bark texture provides cats with
an ideal surface for scratching,
relaxing, pouncing or playing.
Each scratcher also comes
with a bag of certified organic
catnip to entice your kitty.
n Holiday Treats. If your
dog makes Santas nice list,
treat him or her to a liquid
treat like Lickety Stik. The
roll-on dispenser lets dogs
experience all the excitement
and flavor of a moist, meaty
treat without the sticky mess
for owners. Plus, its a fraction
of the calories with none of the
bulk of conventional treats.
And dont forget, when
pampering your pets with
gifts, keep their packages sep-
arate and unwrapped. Normal
holiday trimmings like wrap-
ping paper, ribbon and tinsel
can be unsafe for curious ani-
mals.
By safely indulging your
pets you can get every member
of your family into the holiday
spirit.
Tis the season to pamper your pet
DONT FORGET YOUR PETS: With all the holiday buzz going around, dont forget the furry
friends in your life. (Courtesy Photo/Statepoint Media/John Kelly - Getty Images.)

For much too long a time, it has been difcult for high school students to nd up-to-the-minute information on
their school. A week ago, that barrier was broken when Tri County High School junior Devin Harold and senior Olivia
Barrett launched The Student Scoop, an online publication with the goal of not only keeping all students updated, but
showcasing student talents as well.
The site features both the silly and the more serious silly being student favorite Dummers Quote of the Week
and the more serious being news on all student extra-curricular activities, sports, and events. Student-crafted artwork
is spotlighted in the Student Pieces category; writing pieces and a Viking comic strip are coming soon. Head over
to the Entertainment section, where you will nd new reviews for virtually everything books, gadgets, games,
music, and videos. In the Columns section, you will nd the perspectives of opinionated, humorous students,
foreign-exchange students, and (coming soon) teachers alike. Also coming soon is a Features section that will have
a calendar of all school events, a scoreboard with all high school team scores, and interactive contests. Check out the
site (thestudentscoop.webs.com) and like its Facebook page (facebook.com/thestudentscoop). You can also access the
Student Scoop site from the Tri County Area Schools Home Page.
Tri County Middle School followed
up their toy drive with a trip to WZZM on
December 9th to be on air at 6:30 in the
morning. Mrs. Sheldon took the classroom
that collected the most toys and this year Mrs.
Way's homeroom won. Her students along
with student council members arrived early to
take the bus trip down to stand in the cold to
celebrate their accomplishment of collecting
586 toys this year for Toys for Tots for the
children of Montcalm County.
We are excited to inform you that Tri County Area Schools will be implementing a new district-
wide automated calling system after Christmas Break. This system will make calls regarding daily
attendance, inclement weather and early school closings, and eventually be used to promote
special events district wide and at individual buildings. In order for the system to work properly, it
is important for parents/guardians to keep the schools updated with accurate phone numbers.
Beginning the week of January 4th, attendance calls will begin for high school and middle
school students only. Calls will be made daily, beginning at 5:00 p.m. for any high school/middle
school student that has an unexcused absence for the day. Once the parent/guardian receives the
phone call, they will have 24 hours to properly excuse their son or daughter. This can be done by
calling your students school ofce or sending a note in with your student the next day.
Additionally, district-wide automated calls will be placed to alert parents/guardians of school
closings - including snow days, 2 hour delays, emergency closings, etc.
We are thrilled to be able to add this system to Tri Countys tools for communication with
parents/guardians. With everyone working together to make it successful, we will truly be following
our purpose statement Helping each child achieve their best future.

Daniel Rhode joins Sand Lake Elementary in the music department. Ever since I was in elementary music school
I have been fascinated with music. I begged my mother to get me a recorder before we even started learning them in
school. This love of music was kind of atypical for my family because most of my family works in healthcare. I spent a
lot of my school years playing music with friends and taking part in the band program. I decided when I was in college
that I wanted to help kids learn to love music and be more creative, said Daniel, who is attending Grand Valley State
University.
He just returned from an East Coast trip where he played with the GVSU Music Ensemble. He said he is working
on some music for a symphony orchestra piece that will be played for an event tied to the London Olympics in July.
By: The Lakers Writing Class
Mrs. Bergmans writing class, the Lakers, and Sand Lake
Elementary students have been sponsoring Operation
Mitten Tree. The Mitten Tree is for any Sand Lake students
or other kids who need mittens. The project started on
Monday, December 5 and will close on December 20. The
Laker students sent out a school wide note for donations
of mittens. These mittens are put on the tree randomly
and taken by anyone in need. The tree is sometimes full
of mittens, and it is also great to see when they disappear.
Any mittens left on the tree will be sent to the Mel Trotter
Mission. The Lakers sponsored Operation Mitten Tree to
help promote citizenship in the community.

After traveling 175 miles from Detroit, The
LEAGUE employees nally arrived at the high
school on November 18. They arrived to run
character-building activities for the National
Honor Society (NHS). Throughout the day, NHS
participated in activities that featured blindfolds,
challenging logic, and group discussions. One
activity in particular, however, stood out. Members
had to squat uncomfortably until they were tapped
by a LEAGUE member; if they were tapped after
standing, they were to free to move about. Each
position represented a level of socioeconomic
status. If you were painfully squatting, you were in
poverty. Standing meant that you were at poverty
level, moving freely meant that you were above
poverty level.
The activity really gave me insight into the
lives of those with poverty. It showed how hard it
can be for those in poverty to stand up and ght
it, said senior member Paul Bradley. All in all,
members were happy with the character-building
activities and felt much closer as a group by the end
of the day.
NHS members efforts to improve school unity
were moved further along when they held another
service day on Wednesday, December 14. They
spent the day planning the school-wide, daylong
service day theyre hosting on Martin Luther King
Day. For this project, there are seven stations run by
members of NHS. All students will rotate through
them with teachers for the day. Stations include
a boys assembly, a girls assembly, community
service, college/future planning, and peer listening.
Activities featured at the stations range from
educational charades to informational, interactive
videos. At the end of the day, NHS members and
their adviser Mrs. Babb left feeling pumped up and
ready.

On Wednesday, November 23 Coach Gould took his boys varsity basketball players to Gods Kitchen in Grand Rapids to help serve Thanksgiving dinner to those in need.
The boys helped stock shelves, prepare the food, help in the serving line, clean up, and service anyone at the tables who required assistance. Coach Gould thought it would
be a good experience and teach the boys that its important to give to others. Coach Gould says that he takes his coaching job very seriously and focuses on more than just
basketball. I feel part of my job is to get every young man better prepared for life after high school. They may not leave me the best basketball players, but they will leave
me better young men.
The boys left with a new appreciation for how fortunate they are for all they have. Said one player, It was an eye-opener for me. I feel really good about what we were
able to do for others.

November 29, 2011. The State Court of Ap-
peals recently heard the case of Wayne Snyder,
a prisoner incarcerated since 1999. Snyders
incarceration has cost the people of Michigan
a tidy sum since 1999. When Snyders mother
died, Snyder was notied he would receive
$2,500 in life insurance proceeds. Under the
States Correctional Facility Reimbursement Act
(law number 800.401) the state Treasurer may
le a request to be reimbursed for incarceration
costs from up to 90% of a prisoners assets, with
some few exceptions. Thus the state Treasurer
led immediately for partial reimbursement of
Snyders incarceration costs to the tune of 90%
of Snyders $2,500.
Snyder refused the money. Another Michigan
law allows a person to disclaim money. For
example, one can disclaim money they are about
to inherit, perhaps, for example, because theyd
prefer that their share of an inheritance pass to
some other, more needy beneciary. And one
can disclaim receiving life insurance proceeds as
well. No reason need be given. One only needs to
give the insurance company proper notice. The
Disclaimer of Property Interests Law allows it.
So as soon as Snyder received the life insurance
money, he led such a disclaimer of life insurance
proceeds. By doing so, he thought, there would
be no money for the state to take. The Treasurer
disagreed, saying that because Snyder already
had the money in hand, Snyder could no longer
disclaim it.
Snyders refusal was refused. The trial court
agreed with the Treasurer. It declared Snyders
disclaimer void and ordered ninety percent of his
$2,500 be paid to the Treasurer.
The Appeals Court agreed sort of. The
Appeals court determined that the trial courts
decision was right, but not necessarily because
Snyders disclaimer came too late. The Treasurer
got Snyders money because a prisoner in his
situation is not allowed to disclaim assets in order
to avoid paying his incarceration expenses back
to the state.
The Appeals court observed that: if it appears
that the prisoner has any assets which ought to be
subjected to the claim of the state under this act,
the court shall issue an order requiring any per-
son, corporation, or other legal entity possessed
or having custody of those assets to appropriate
and apply the assets or a portion thereof toward
reimbursing the state as provided for under this
act. But before entering any order on behalf of
the state against the defendant, the court shall
take into consideration any legal obligation of the
defendant to support a spouse, minor children,
or other dependents and any moral obligation
to support dependents to whom the defendant is
providing or has in fact provided support, and
exempting their homestead, and up to $50,000 of
money earned in prison wages.
The language of the reimbursement
provisions indicates (the) legislative intent
to shift the burden of incarceration expenses to
prisoners, and from the taxpayers, whenever pos-
sible, tempered (only) by its recognition of a
prisoners legal and moral obligations to support
dependents, and the importance of a prisoners
homestead.
Its a prisoners duty. He has to pay his rent.
Snyder didnt have any family or dependents to
support, nor a homestead. So Snyders assets were
up for grabs. The disclaimer was not allowed.
The state got 90% of the $2,500. And Snyder still
owes you and me the rest of the rent.

Did you know that one alcohol-related crash
occurs approximately every half an hour?
Thats right. There are about 48 alcohol-
related accidents each day, 336 each week
and 17,472 each year, and many of these
result in fatalities. In 2005 alone, over 39%
of all traffic fatalities involved alcohol. The
statistics dont lie. Drunk driving leads to
thousands of injuries and deaths every
year, particularly around the holiday season
when parties abound and alcohol consump-
tion increases. Dont let it happen to you.
Drink in moderation this season, and in the
event you are too intoxicated to get behind
the wheel, give your keys to someone else,
catch a ride with another person or call a
friend.
Dont drink
and drive
Drinking and Driving
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, traffic accidents are the lead-
ing cause of death in ages six to 33. Drunk driving accounts for almost half of these deaths.
Drunk driving accidents occur more frequently at night and on the weekends.
Three in 10 Americans will be involved in a drunk driving accident at some point during their
lives.
An average of one person is injured in a drunk driving accident every two minutes.
An average of one person dies in a drunk driving accident every 33 minutes.
Approximately 43 people die each day in a drunk driving accident, 305 each week and 1,309
each month.
Drunk drivers arent the only fatalities. Of the 12,892 people killed in drunk driving accidents
in 2000, only 69% were drunk while 31% were sober.

Vertigo
This is a nasty condition that plagues as many people as the old Alfred Hitchcock movie of the same name. The symptom
of spinning dizziness may be mild or so severe that one cannot stand up. Nausea is often a part of it. It is usually caused by an
imbalance in the inner ear. That may be caused by trauma, viral infection, circulatory, or dietary.
Within the inner ear there are two parts: the cochlea (the hearing apparatus) and the semi-circular canals (the balance
mechanism also called the labyrinth and the vestibule). There are three semi-circular canals in each ear. One is positioned in
each plane like the sides of a box: Side, Back, and Bottom. These allow us to stay oriented and aware of our position in space.
In other words, it helps us know which end is up.
Each canal is a hollow tube shaped like a ring, lled with uid. Near the bottom is a wide spot where there is a layer to hair
cells, much like a at hair brush. Balanced on these hair cells is a small stone, called an otolith. When we move, the uid pushes
the stone to one side and the movement of the hair cells is interpreted by the brain as motion. Sometimes the little stone gets
stuck or the uid begins to move on its own and we have a sensation of spinning. This is the mechanical cause behind vertigo.
Dietary things that aggravate vertigo are too much salt, too much alcohol, too much salty food like ham, bacon, chips,
popcorn, etc. Not enough water can also be a factor. We always see a lot of vertigo around the holidays when people are over-
eating salty food and not drinking enough water. Everyday we should drink 1/3 to 1/2 our body weight in ounces of pure water
(up to 100 oz per day). Pop and coffee do not count as water and they may make the problem worse since they tend to be
dehydrating.
When the middle ear is the cause of the problem, one can use Epleys Maneuvers to recalibrate the stones in the semi-circular
canals. To see a video of this go to the internet at www.youtube.com, then enter epleys maneuver
video. There will be several clips to show you what to do.
Start by lying on your back, then turn your head 45 degrees to the affected side and hold that
position for 20-30 seconds. Next turn your head to the other side at 45 degrees and hold that position
for 20-30 seconds. Now roll over on your side keeping your head in the same position with respect to
your body. You will be looking at the oor. Hold that position for 20-30 seconds. Then sit up slowly. If
both ears are affected, repeat this process, starting with other side next time. If you are not sure which
side is affected most, just do the procedure in both directions.
This simple technique, with salt restriction and good hydration, will successfully manage about 80%
of the cases of vertigo. Homeopathic Cocculus 30 C can be added, one pellet every 30 to 60 minutes,
to assist with moderate cases. Prescription Antivert, Phenergan for nausea, and Steroids may be needed
for more severe cases.

In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/
