COME ONE, COME ALL

MECOSTA COUNTY YOUTH AND FAMILY
CENTER PROVIDES SERVICES FOR
STUDENTS, FAMILIES
By Kyle Leppek
Pioneer Staff Writer

MECOSTA For many, retirement is a time to

relax after years of hard work. For Jim and Bonnie
Shaw, their retirement closely resembles their former
professional life.
As retired teachers each with more than 30
years of experience at all ages levels the Shaws
lead an after-school program at the Mecosta County
Youth and Family Center in Mecosta. Although the
program existed for 15 years at numerous locations,
it wasnt until 2000 when the couple purchased the
current Mecosta property and built their own center
that finally opened in October 2009.
Monday through Thursday, the center holds an
after-school program that runs roughly two hours.
Mondays and Wednesdays are designated for
second- through fourth-graders, while Tuesdays and
Thursdays see fifth- through eighth-graders. From
their teaching experience, the Shaws know to keep
the program structured and educational as well as
entertaining, Jim said.
Parents seems to enjoy having their kids here,
Jim said. (Parents) know its constructive, its not just,
Here, go and enjoy yourself for two hours and then
go home.
The first 20 to 30 minutes of the program is spent
working on homework or reading. A lesson usually
on bullying, peer pressure or anti-drug use arts
and crafts and time to play in the gym rounds out the
rest of the time at the center.
If children are already involved with an after-school
program, the Shaws make their priorites clear; school
always comes first. For children who arent involved
in after-school activities, the Shaws want them to
utilize the center.
I was one of those kids that had nothing to do; I
didnt have anything. My parents werent well off and
we went without a lot, Jim said. I said, My kids will
never do that, and then I said, If I can do something
about it, then other families will be involved. There is
a need out there for us to get those kids in here.
Everything at the center is done in teams to help
teach the children how to work with others and the
atmosphere is always positive. The Shaws dont
allow bullying or swearing. If a child is reprimanded
and asked to leave the center, it is only for a week; the
Shaws will never ban a child forever. It is important
to distinguish being upset with a childs behavior, not
with the child, Jim said.
Having taught for most of their lives, Jim and Bonnie
know the limitations schools face while making sure
students meet academic standards. At the center,
the Shaws can listen to the children and focus on
community service and life skills that schools may not
have time for.
I used to have all these goals of what I wanted (the
children) to know. Now I think if respect and a work
ethic is all that I taught them, that will be enough,
Bonnie said.
One thing that will never change, the Shaws said, is
the after-school program. That center will always set
that time aside. Other than that, though, the couple
would like to see the building used more. They are
always willing to open it if prior arrangements are
made. In the past, the center has hosted school
fundraisers. They would like to see children and their
families take more ownership in the building.
Our goals and dreams for this center was for it to
be a true community center where every one in the
community has a place here and can do some of the
things they would like to do, Bonnie said.
For now, though, the center helps children stay
productive and find constructive things to do. One
student said, I actually came here today to stay out
of trouble and off the streets, Jim said.
Currently, the centers largest need is volunteers.
As of now, the Shaws run the center largely by

themselves. They make several trips transporting

children to the center themselves. Volunteers dont
need a set schedule, just helping out when someone
can would make a difference. Even donating snacks
or another service helps, they said.
I would like to see the building self-sufficient. We
could turn it over to somebody that can run it and we
would stay on the board and make sure it is running
properly, Jim said. But in the next four to five years,
I would like to walk away and say, Now the building
is running; it will continue to run. But you cant walk
away when it is not functioning by itself.
Although running the center by themselves can be
difficult, the Shaws wouldnt do it if they didnt enjoy
it.
You know the feeling when you do something for
kids, you see the smile on their face and you know
you did the right thing? Jim asked. I just wished
more people would get involved and see that. Theyd
hang on to it.
Besides the after school program and various
sports equipment and activities, the center recently
received 10 computers. The computers can be used
to help residents practice for their GED or for public
use similar to a library. The computers will be ready
by the new year.
Currently, most of the children that attend the center
are from the Mecosta area but the Shaws want to get
more children involved. They are willing to work with
parents to sort out transportation issues.
For more information, to volunteer, to use the
facilities or to enroll your child in an after school
program, contact the Shaws at (231) 972-4594.
The center is located at 587 S. Washington St. in
Mecosta

PATIENTS HELPING PATIENTS WITH

KIDNEY DISEASE
(NewsUSA) - According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, approximately one out of
every six adults in the United States is living with
chronic kidney disease (CKD). If you are battling this
disease or caring for someone who has it, help and
support are just a phone call away. The Renal Support
Network (RSN) offers a unique program called the
RSN HOPEline, a patient-run, toll-free telephone
service that specializes in patient-to-patient support
for people diagnosed with CKD and those who care
for them.
Callers gain valuable insights from speaking to
someone who understands -- a knowledgeable
patient who has learned to live successfully with
the illness. RSN HOPEline operators share their
experiences and impart strength and hope. RSN is
a nonprofit, patient-focused, patient-run organization
that provides non-medical services to those affected
by CKD.
For more information, visit RSNhope.org or call
RSN HOPEline at 1-800-579-1970 (English) or
1-800-780-4238 (Spanish).

INTERNET SAFETY 101: HOW TO

PROTECT YOUR KIDS ONLINE
(NewsUSA) - It is no mystery that technology
allows kids to gain 24-hour access to the media, but
a recent study by the Kaiser Foundation discovered
the average kid spends 7.5 hours a day using
entertainment media. Through using multiple media
at one time such as music, TV, movies, the Internet,
video games and texting, kids can actually pack a
total of 10 hours and 45 minutes.
Although these ways of socializing and
communicating can be enriching, they do come
with certain risks. Kids can become victims of online
bullies, predators, hackers and scammers.

The Internet has great potential for kids in terms of

knowledge and resources, but we take seriously the
job of teaching our youth how to navigate it safely and
properly, said Dan Rauzi, senior director, technology
programs at Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).

BGCA has partnered with Sprint to address these

issues and help better prepare young people to
navigate their world -- both real and virtual. Sprints
online resource, www.4NetSafety.com, offers free
tools from experts that address the dangers that
young people commonly encounter online and
encourages positive dialogue about Internet safety. In
addition, www.myclubmylife.com -- BGCAs website
for teens -- includes a special Media Safety section
that has more information and teen-friendly resources
to further promote Internet safety.

Its important that your child be aware that the

fundamentals -- what we say, how we say it, and
why we say it -- are the same online and off. Here
are some tips for discussing Internet safety with your
family:
Create an honest, open environment. Kids look to
their parents to help guide them. You may not have
all the answers, and being honest about that can go
a long way.

Initiate conversations. Even if your kids are

comfortable approaching you, dont wait for them to
start the conversation. Use everyday opportunities to
talk to your kids about being online.
Communicate your values. Be upfront about your
values and how they apply in an online context.
Communicating your values clearly can help your
kids make smarter and more thoughtful decisions
when they face tricky situations.
Be patient. Most kids need to hear information
repeated, in small doses, for it to sink in. If you keep
talking with your kids, your patience and persistence
will pay off in the long run.

12 IN 2012: DOCTOR-PRESCRIBED
NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS
(NewsUSA) - With the many healthy
resolutions being made to kick off 2012,
wouldnt it be nice if you actually had a
doctors opinion to point you toward the
healthiest changes you can make?
A new survey of practicing physicians
by EverydayHealth.com with MedPage
Today reveals the 12 most popular
doctor-prescribed resolutions.
Top 12 Doctor-Prescribed New Years
Resolutions for 2012
1.
Monitor your blood pressure
2.
Quit smoking
3.
Exercise 30 minutes a day
4.
Lower your cholesterol
5.
Get a diabetes screening
6.
Control your portions
7.
Get a flu shot
8.
Take the stairs whenever
possible
9.
Sleep at least 7 hours a night
10. Eat whole grains, not refined
flour
11. For women, perform a self
breast exam every month
12. Spend more time with family
and friends
Although not ranked in the top 12, the
survey includes some resolutions you
may welcome.
The most surprising: Dont give

MINIMIZE RETIREMENT RISK WITH

PERMANENT LIFE INSURANCE

up coffee. Yes, thats correct. Coffee

actually has health benefits that
doctors recommend. Studies show
that women who drink a cup of coffee
daily have up to a 25 percent lower
stroke risk than those who drink it less
often. In addition to lowering stroke risk,
coffee can also decrease your odds
of developing diabetes, skin cancer,
cavities, Parkinsons disease, breast
cancer and heart disease.

(NewsUSA) - With persistent

economic
uncertainty,
retirement
worries plague many Americans.
Instead of dreaming about their golden
years, workers may be haunted by
the possibility of a retirement where
the idea of not having enough money
may not be hyperbole. Consumers are
looking to diminish risk and take control.
A financial professional will tailor a plan
to fit an individuals own financial goals,
but permanent life insurance should
be a part of any diversified retirement
strategy and can offer security and
growth for those with a number of
working years ahead.

Three other noteworthy resolutions

involved in Everyday Healths survey
are to forgive people, try a once-aweek technology vacation for at least
two months and dont text and drive. All
great advice.
However, none of these resolutions
can be effective if you cant stay
committed to them.
About 40 to 45 percent of Americans
make New Years resolutions, and
only about 60 percent end up keeping
them for at least part of the year, says
Everyday Health Medical Director
Mallika Marshall, MD. The key is not
to bite off more than you can chew.
Pledge to make a change that you
can maintain. And try to get friends
and family involved. Its much easier to
meet your goal if you have support.

Permanent life insurance offers death

protection as well as the potential for
cash value accumulation, which can
be an important source of retirement
income. As the value of a permanent
policy grows tax deferred over time, the
cash may be used for any purpose.* This
kind of life insurance offers a measure
of flexibility that enables consumers to
make choices and better manage their
financial lives and can augment other
income sources like Social Security,
401k savings or pensions for those
lucky enough to have them.

To view the complete survey, and

to gain more tips and tools to live a
healthy, happier life every day, visit
EverydayHealth.com.

The income stream from a permanent

life insurance policy may also help cover
the gap years, which fall between
retirement and the age when Medicare

and Social Security benefits begin.

Most retirees will need the guidance
of a financial professional to determine
the best use of resources during the
gap period and throughout retirement.
However, consumers should know that
a permanent insurance policy could be
the difference between retirement at an
age you desire instead of when Social
Security and qualified plan distributions
start. This additional resource may also
enable a retiree to delay the start of
Social Security payments, which will
ultimately deliver larger monthly sums
over time.

In addition to assisting with bridging

the gap years, a permanent insurance
policy may help cover unexpected or
planned expenses from healthcare
costs, to paying for a grandchilds
college education, to contributing to the
start-up of a family business.

No matter how permanent insurance

is ultimately used, if structured properly,
a policy can provide an income tax- and
estate tax-free death benefit. Retirees
can then spend their retirement income
knowing they will still leave a legacy to
their children or a favorite charity.

To learn more about how to leave a

legacy and strengthen your retirement
plan with permanent life insurance,
please visit www.pennmutual.com.
