I chose to create a Website on Mohandas K.

Gandhi for this years History Day project because the events of the Indian Independence movement, Gandhis fight for Indians rights in both South Africa and India, was a perfect example of this years theme, Revolution, Reaction, and Reform. In addition, I was able to travel to Gandhis home in Mumbai, his memorial and museum in Delhi, and the Swabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, where Gandhi had begun the Khadi movement and the Dandi Salt March, while visiting India two years ago. I chose to create a website because I was familiar with the Weebly website creator from previous experiences and I enjoy working with technology. I began my research by watching the film Gandhi. This gave me a general overview of the events leading to Indias independence. I checked out several books from the Fresno County Library at Woodward Park. My mother and grandmother also had several books about Gandhi. I was able to form my timeline. I found primary information such as quotes, speeches, and documents online and in many of the books I had gathered. Next, I created my timeline about the revolution of India using timerime.com. I included all of the events leading up to Indias Independence from Great Britain. Then, I created my website, where I wrote about Gandhis movements in South Africa, the reaction and the reform of the movement, and recent events using the tactics of Gandhi. I also included several speeches and quotes that I found from primary resources. Then I conducted a word count to make sure I did not exceed the word limit. I rewrote pieces to make it more comprehensible. I was able to conduct an interview with my Grandfather, who was alive during the Indian Independence movement. I was surprised by how involved children were in the movement. His parents were both arrested during the protests, giving me great insight about what happened to those who were arrested as well as how their families felt when they were imprisoned. After conducting the interview, I needed to edit the video. Then, I added these video clips to my website. I also interviewed a historian, Professor Reimer. He offered historical context to Gandhis efforts and legacy. I learned a lot about how Gandhi fought for Indian Swaraj, or self Rule, from the British. The way that Gandhi could rally together such massive crowds of people without the use of technology we have today seemed almost impossible. I was also amazed by Gandhis willingness to overlook the cultural, religious, and social differences of the people. He was able to bring temporary peace between Muslims and Hindus who had been violently fighting with each other for several decades. He was able to use Satyagraha, or truth force, to help people at conflict with each other find a common goal and work toward it. His humility and search for truth proved more powerful than the British Empire. You must be the change you wish to see in the world.-M. Gandhi
