The Importance Of Tawheed, Part 1 of 8

By Shaykh Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan
Translated by Abu Abdillah Hassan As-Somali

All praise is due to Allaah the Most High and the peace of blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family and followers. To proceed: This is not from those subjects which carry little benefit, nor is it from those subjects which are specific to only a few people, with the exception of others. Rather this subject is one which is obligatory upon each and every Muslim to have knowledge of. This subject is the Importance of At-Tawheed and its lofty status in Al-Islaam. This is a subject that is obligatory upon us to always speak about, clarify and study because happiness in this life and in the next life depends upon it. The Meaning of Tawheed The meaning of At-Tawheed is to single out Allaah alone with all worship and to abandon the worship of anything other than Allaah. This subject is frequently mentioned in the Book of Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic. You would hardly find a Soorah from the Soorahs of the Quraan, except that within it Tawheed has been mentioned, and that there is a command and encouragement towards it. There are many Soorahs that relate to Tawheed, especially those Soorahs which were revealed before al-Hijrah (Migration to Madeenah) which are known as al-Makkiyyah, and you would find that from the beginning to the end of the Soorah it deals with the issue of At-Tawheed. Imaam Ibnul-Qayyim (rahimahullaah) mentioned in his book 'Madaarij asSaalikeen': "The Quraan, all of it, is dealing with the issue of At-Tawheed, because it is either information about Allaah the Most High and His Names and Attributes, or the command to worship Him alone without ascribing any partners to Him, or a prohibition from Ash-Shirk (associating partners with Allaah the Most High)." Also, it either deals with clarifying or highlighting the reward (in this life and in the Hereafter) for those people who worship Allaah with At-Tawheed. They are

those people who directed their worship solely to Allaah the Most High. Similarly, it deals with clarifying or highlighting the punishment of the polytheists. They are those who turned away from At-Tawheed. It clarifies the punishments that they were afflicted with in this life and that which awaits them in the Hereafter. It is either news about those who worshipped Allaah with At-Tawheed from the Messengers and their followers, or it is information about the disbelievers from the polytheists and their followers from the previous nations, like the People of Nooh, the People of Hood, the People of Saalih, the People of Shuayb, the People of Ibraaheem, the People of Madyan and Al-Mutafikaat and other than them. When they turned away from At-Tawheed and disobeyed the Messengers, it tells us about that which afflicted them and that which overcame them. In addition to those things mentioned, it either clarifies that which is halaal (permissible), or that which is haraam (impermissible). This is from the rights of At-Tawheed. Also, from the rights of At-Tawheed are: A person obtaining that which is halaal, sufficing with that which is halaal, using that which is halaal, abandoning that which is haraam, distancing himself from that which is haraam, and distancing himself from earning that which is haraam. Therefore, the whole of the Quraan is about the issue of At-Tawheed. This is due to it either clarifying At-Tawheed, or clarifying that which nullifies it and that which would blemish it. Also, it is either information about the People of At-Tawheed and that which Allaah the Most High blessed them with, or information about the People of Ash-Shirk (the polytheists) and that which Allaah the Most High punished them with in this life and that which He has prepared for them in the Hereafter. It is either rulings relating to that which is halaal or that which is haraam, which are from the rights of At-Tawheed. Therefore, all of the Quraan is about At-Tawheed and the rights of AtTawheed. It deals with that which nullifies At-Tawheed. Therefore the Quraan, the whole of the Quraan, revolves around the subject of AtTawheed. The Importance of Knowledge for the Caller Indeed some of the people today from the ignorant callers, and I say this and it is unfortunate because the one who is ignorant is not suitable for giving Dawah. It is not permissible for a person to enter into the field of ad-Dawah (calling to Allaah the Most High) except for the one who is deeply grounded in

- Shaykh Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan

knowledge and the one who prepares himself with knowledge, but you find from the ignorant callers, those who belittle the issue of At-Tawheed they say that: The people are Muslim and you are in a Muslim land. The Islamic world is not in need of one who delivers lectures about At-Tawheed. Or they say that: It is not a need that Tawheed be established and set in the syllabuses in the schools. There isn't a need for the books about At-Tawheed to be read in the masaajid. This is what they say! These statements are from great and extreme ignorance. The Muslim is more in need than anyone else to have knowledge of At-Tawheed in order that he may fulfil its rights. So he may also establish it, arise with it, and distance himself from that which would damage it or that which would nullify it from ash-Shirk, innovation, and superstitions. It is not sufficient to be Muslim only by name without fulfilling the rights alIslaam. And it is not possible to realise this, except by the individual learning, knowing its foundations, and knowing the principle which it is built upon. This is the issue and subject of At-Tawheed. Surely if the people were to be ignorant about At-Tawheed and they were to be ignorant about the matters of ash-Shirk, and matters of al-Jaahiliyyah then verily, at that time they would fall into ash-Shirk, whether they were aware or unaware of this. And at that time the creed of At-Tawheed would be damaged. As the Ameer ul-Mumineen Umar ibn al-Khattaab (Radiy Allaahu anhu) said, "Verily, the knots of al-Islaam will be untied one by one, if they were to grow up in Al-Islaam, those who did not know about al-Jaahiliyyah." So, is it that all of the Muslims know about these matters of Aqeedah (creed), and know about these matters of At-Tawheed? The scholars are the ones who know of and understand these affairs, and from those scholars are a few, fewer than few! We mean by this that those scholars with the correct understanding, they are few. And the longer the time goes on, verily the true scholars will become fewer. Those who pretend to have knowledge and claim it will increase and become many. Also, the reciters will become many and the ignorant leaders will increase. As the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

www.al-athariyyah.com

The Importance of Tawheed

- Shaykh Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan

"Verily Allaah does not seize this knowledge from the chest of men, rather he seizes this knowledge with the death of the scholars. So if there was not to remain any scholar, the people would take the ignorant as their leaders and they would give Fataawa (religious verdicts) without knowledge and they would be misguided and they would misguide others." In another hadeeth it comes that: "In the latter part of time the scholars will become few and there will be many reciters." And in another narration it is reported with the meaning that: "At the latter part of time there will be many speakers, but there will be very few jurists (fuqahaa)." From these narrations, it becomes apparent that it is obligatory upon us that we busy ourselves with the issue of At-Tawheed. We should give this issue great concern and total consideration. We should study, teach, give lectures, establish conferences, and base our programs on it by those means and devices that reach the public. We should write in the papers concerning it, and we call to At-Tawheed. Whoever is happy with this, then they are happy, and whoever gets angry with this, then they are angry. This is the foundation of our Religion. This is that which our Aqeedah (creed) is built upon. We are the greatest of the people in need of Tawheed and therefore we study it and we clarify it to the people. In the Islamic world you find, with the exception of this land which Allaah the Most High has protected with the call of at-Tawheed, that they have shrines, big lofty shrines, where the people commit ash-Shirk, and they are built upon the graves. This is something that you hear about, and some of you who have travelled have seen these things. The Religion with them is ash-Shirk (associating partners with Allaah the Most High), worshipping the dead and the graves. They hold that the person who does not practice these acts is not a Muslim, because he, as they claim, has belittled the awliyaa. This is that which they claim. Also in those lands you find duaat (callers) who do not concern themselves with the matter of at-Tawheed. This is unfortunate. All that they call the people to is good manners. You find them calling the people to stay away from az-Zina (fornication) and to abandon drinking alcohol. These are major sins and impermissible acts without a shadow of a doubt. Even if the people were to abandon and stay away from az-Zina, drinking alcohol, improve their manners, abandon ribaa (usury, interest) but they did not leave and abandon the worship of the graves, verily their foundation would be incorrect and their Religion

would be incorrect. As for the person who does not commit ash-Shirk; if he did not reject shirk, criticise it, did not call to Tawheed, and if he did not free himself from the polytheists, then verily he would be like them. That is why Allaah, the Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet: "And say (O Muhammad): This is my path and I call to Allaah upon knowledge. I and those who follow me and Glorified and Exalted is Allaah above all that they associate as partners with Him and above the disbelief and hypocrisy. And I am not of the polytheists. " Soorah Yoosuf (12):108 This shows that Allaah the Most High is glorified and exalted above all that they associate as partners with Him, disbelief and hypocrisy. So here, in this part of the verse "And I am not of the polytheists" This is a disassociation from the people of Shirk.

Freeing and disassociating from Shirk and the Polytheists For the Muslim who worships Allaah the Most High with Tawheed, it is incumbent upon him that he frees himself from the polytheists. It is not permissible for him to remain silent whilst ash-Shirk is rampant in the land, tombs are being erected, graves are established, and people are making at-tawwaaf (circulating) them. It is not permissible for the one who believes in Allaah the Most High and the Last Day to remain silent about this infectious disease which is eating and damaging the body of this Ummah (nation). Also, it is not permissible for him to say, "I am (only) going to call the people to live their lives in the correct manner, to behave with good manners, to stay away from alcohol, and to stay away from az-Zina." What help or benefit will these matters bring if the foundation is lost? If you wanted to build a building, erect a wall or house isn't the first thing that you start and concern yourself with the foundations and the pillars so that you may erect a sound building? If you did not concern yourself with the foundation, or with the pillars of the building then no matter how high you erect it and no matter how much you decorate it, it is liable to fall down! This is a severe danger upon you and anyone who would enter this building. Likewise the Religion, if it is not built and erected upon the pure Aqeedah and the correct foundation, which is the Tawheed of Allaah the Most High, freeing oneself from ash-Shirk and distancing the polytheists from the dwellings of al-Islaam, then indeed this Religion would not aid its people because this Religion is not built upon a foundation, and it is not built upon a pure pillar. The Prophet remained in Makkah, after he was sent with His Message, for thirteen years. He was calling the people to At-Tawheed and saying to the people: "Say: 'None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah the Most High alone and you will be successful." He was calling them to At-Tawheed! Those Soorahs, which were revealed in Makkah before al-Hijrah (the migration to Medina), as we mentioned to you earlier, were all dealing with the issue of AtTawheed. They were laying down the correct Aqeedah (creed). When the Tawheed had been established and the correct Aqeedah had been clarified, then the rest of the legislative rulings were revealed. So the command to establish the Prayer was revealed, and also the command to give Zakaat was revealed. And the command to give Zakaat was revealed in
www.al-athariyyah.com 1

The Importance of Tawheed, Part 2 of 8

- Shaykh Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan

Madeenah, whereas the command to establish the Prayer was revealed in Makkah on the night of Al-Israa wal-Miraaj (the Ascension), which was before al-Hijrah (the Prophets (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) migration), by a few months. So, after Tawheed had been established, and after the correct Aqeedah had been clarified and explained, then the obligation of Zakaat, Fasting and Hajj were revealed, and the rest of the legislative rulings of Al-Islaam. This is clarified clearly and evidently when the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) sent Muaadh (Radiy Allaahu anhu) to Yemen and he laid before him a methodology of Ad-Dawah (calling to Allaah the Most High). So the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said to him: "Verily you are going to a People of the Book, so let the first thing that you call them to be to testify that none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah the Most High" Look! He started with Tawheed. Then he said: "And if they obey you in this" Meaning: that they testified that none has the right to be worshipped in truth except Allaah the Most High and that the Aqeedah is present. "Then inform them that Allaah the Most High (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) has made it obligatory upon them five prayers; in the night and in the day. And if they obey you in this, then inform them that Allaah the Most High (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) has made Zakaat obligatory upon them; this is taken from the wealthy and it is returned to the poor" At-Tawheed was the first thing that the Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) commanded Muaadh (Radiy Allaahu anhu) with, when giving Ad-Dawah. This is not something specific to Muaadh (Radiy Allaahu anhu) alone. Rather, it is general to everyone who calls to Allaah the Mighty and Majestic that we start with this fundamental. If they do not establish and affirm Tawheed, then do not command them with the Prayer because there is no benefit to the Prayer without Tawheed. There is no benefit in Zakaat without Tawheed. There is no benefit in Siyaam (fasting) without Tawheed. There is no benefit with Hajj in the absence of Tawheed. Allaah the Most High said: "Indeed it has been revealed to you (O Muhammad) as it was revealed to those who were before you, if you join others in worship with Allaah the Most High, then surely all of your deeds will be in vain and you will certainly be among the losers. Nay! But worship Allaah the Most High alone and be amongst the grateful." Soorah Az-Zumar (39):65-66 Allaah the Most High said, when mentioning the offspring of Ibraaheem (alayhis salaam): "That was Our proof which We gave Ibraaheem against his people; We raise

whom We will in degree. Certainly your Lord is All-Wise, All-Knowing. And We bestowed upon him Ishaaq and Yaqoob, each of them We guided and before him We guided Nooh. And amongst his offspring were Sulaymaan and Daawood and Ayyoob and Yoosuf and Moosaa and Haroon. Thus do we reward alMuhsinoon. " Soorah Al-An'aam (6):83-84 Then He said: "And also some of their fathers and their offspring and their brethren We chose them and We guided them to the Straight Path. This is the guidance of Allaah the Most High, with which He guides whomsoever He wills of His slaves. But if they had joined in worship others with Allaah the Most High, all that they used to do would not have been of any benefit to them." Soorah Al-An'aam(6):88 All of the Prophets (alayhimus salaatu wassalaam) started their call with the call to Tawheed. Allaah the Most High said about Nooh (Alayhi salaam): "And We sent Nooh to his people saying: O my people! Worship Allaah the Most High, for verily you have no ilaah (god) except Him.'" Soorah Al-Muminoon(23):23 And Allaah the Most High said: "And We sent to Aad their brother Hood, saying to his people: O my people! Worship Allaah the Most High, for verily you have no ilaah (god) except Him.'" Soorah Al-Araaf (7):65 And Allaah the Most High said: "And to Madyan we sent their brother Shuayb and he said: O my people! Worship Allaah the Most High, for you have no ilaah (god) except Him.'" Soorah Al-Araaf (7):85) Allaah the Most High mentioned all of the Messengers in a general manner, when He said: "And We sent to every nation a Messenger commanding them to worship Allaah the Most High alone and to stay away from at-Taaghoot (false deities) and from them there were those whom Allaah the Most High (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) guided and from them there were those upon whom straying was justified." Soorah An-Nahl(16):36 And Allaah the Most High said:

The Muslims will never be united except with At-Tawheed This principle is the foundation, the fundamental and pillar. So how can we abstain from this matter?! How can we be negligent concerning this affair?! How can we declare the one who calls to it to be mistaken?! How can it be said about the one who calls to this that he is separating the Muslims?! No! (Actually) this individual is not separating the Muslims; rather he is joining the ranks of the Muslims because the ranks of the Muslims will not be united, except upon the word of Tawheed. And there will not be any safety, or well-being and the safety will never be settled except upon At-Tawheed. Allaah the Most High said: "Allaah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds that He will certainly grant them succession in the land as He granted it to those who were before them. And that He will grant them the authority to practise their Religion which He has chosen for them. And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security, after their fear, provided they worship Me and do not associate anything in worship with Me." Soorah An-Noor (24):55 These great issues will not be obtained except through the worship of Allaah the Most High alone without associating or ascribing any partners to Him. As Allaah the Most High said: "provided they worship Me and do not associate anything in worship with Me." Soorah An-Noor (24):55 The ranks of this Ummah will not be united and the building of this Ummah will not be correct except upon the Kalimah (word/ statement) of At-Tawheed and upon the correct Aqeedah (creed) of At-Tawheed. If Shirk was to appear, and innovations were to spread, and superstitions were left and not dealt with, and if it was said, Leave the people, the people are free when it comes to their beliefs and their creed, leave them, do not chase them away with this type of statement and this type of action, splitting and differing will occur. And the Shaytaan (the devil) will enter between and amongst the ranks, and within the lines of the Muslims and he will split their Jamaaah (united body of Muslims), as is presently happening.

The Importance Of Tawheed, Part 2 of 8

- Shaykh 'Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan

Let me give you an example using this land, before the call of Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab (rahimahullaah) to At-Tawheed (in this land) was split and disunited. Every village used to have a leader, and every village used to frighten and scare the other, and they also used to fight the other. They used to fight so much that it is mentioned in history that the people of one village used to fight amongst themselves. One side of the village used to fight the other side of the village. There was looting, robbing, fighting, killing and its like. When Allaah the Most High brought this blessed call upon the hands of this righteous successful man (Shaykh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhaab, rahimahullaah), this land became one. It came under one leadership and became a country which was built upon the Religion. It was built upon At-Tawheed. It does not cease to be so, and all praise is due to Allaah the Most High, because it was established upon At-Tawheed. The Blessing of Tawheed Before this land was established upon At-Tawheed, it used to be one that was disunited. The people of this land used to seek blessings with the trees and stones. The magicians used to act and perform their magic amongst the people. The tricksters used to roam in the villages and they used to corrupt and wreck the Aqeedah (creed) of the people. The ruling was with the tribes and it was with pre-Islamic customs, despite the fact that there were many scholars present at that time, but they did not pay any attention to call to Tawheed and warning against Shirk. When Allaah the Most High brought this light through this blessed Dawah, this land became one and the slaves became happy and content. The punishments were established, the good was enjoined, the evil was forbidden and the Muslims became brothers. This was due to the blessings of the correct and sound Aqeedah (creed) of Tawheed. This is an example which is close to us. But then you have the example of the Arab. Before the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) was sent with his message they were disunited, scattered and split. There were revolutions and attacks on various tribes. When the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) called them to AtTawheed, they then answered Allaah the Most High and they answered His Messenger. They became one. They also became an amazing strength in the earth and they ruled over the slaves and the lands. Allaah the Most High mentioned them with His saying: "And remember Allaahs Favour upon you, when you were enemies, one to another, but He joined your hearts together, so that by His Grace you became brethren. And you were on the brink of a pit of fire and He saved you from it. Thus Allaah makes his Ayaat clear to you, that you may be guided." Soorah AaliImraan (3):103

The Importance Of Tawheed, Part 2 of 8

- Shaykh 'Allaamah Saalih Al-Fawzaan

In this verse, Allaah the Most High clarifies the state of the Arab people before the call of the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and their state after the Dawah of the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and after they answered him. And Allaah the Most High said: "Indeed Allaah conferred a great favour upon the believers, when He sent amongst them a Messenger from amongst themselves, reciting unto them the verses and purifying them and instructing them in the Book and in the Sunnah, whilst before that they had been in manifest error and misguidance." Soorah AaliImraan (30):164 Before the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) was sent with his message, the people were in extreme misguidance and the other nations over-powered them. An example would be Persia and Rome. Each country from the disbelieving countries used to have a share in the Arabian Peninsula. When Islaam came, people entered into the Religion of Allaah the Most High. The opposite occurred. Thereby the Arabian Peninsula started to have control and power over the world and there were many conquests and openings of the various lands. Islaam spread and the people entered into the Religion of Allaah in great numbers. Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) said: "The latter part of this Ummah will not be rectified except by that which rectified the first part of this Ummah (nation)." If this Ummah (nation) now wants unity and it wants strength and harmony, then indeed it will not be rectified except by that which rectified the first part of this Ummah. That which rectified the first part of this Ummah was At-Tawheed. So, the latter part of this Ummah will not be rectified except with At-Tawheed. It will not be rectified except by unity upon the kalimah (word/ statement) of AtTawheed and upon the kalimah, "None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allaah." Therefore that which will join this Ummah (nation) is the correct Aqeedah (creed) and righteous actions. Allaah the Most High said: "He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and with the true Religion." Soorah Al-Fath (48):28

The Importance Of Tawheed, Part 4 of 8

By Shaykh Allaamah Saalih al-Fawzaan Translated by Abu Abdillaah Hassan As-Somali

Is Tawheed Ur-Ruboobiyyah sufficient? Guidance is beneficial knowledge and the true and correct Religion is righteous actions. It is not possible for this nation to unite, except through beneficial knowledge and righteous actions, of which the foundation is At-Tawheed, and this is singling Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) out with all types of worship. What is Tawheed? It is to single Allaah out with all worship. Also, Tawheed is not like some of the ignorant people claim or some of the misguided people say. They say that: "At-Tawheed is to affirm the existence of Allaah or to affirm that Allaah is the Creator, Sustainer and the One who gives life and brings death." This is a type of Tawheed, but not the Tawheed that is requested and sought specifically. That type of Tawheed is the one that those who are astray and ignorant claim is Tawheed. That type was affirmed even by the polytheists at the time of the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam), but this never entered them into the fold of Al-Islaam. Allaah the Most High said: "And if you were to ask them (the polytheists): Who created the heavens and the earth? They would say: Allaah'." Soorah Luqmaan (31):25 Also Allaah the Most High said: "Say (O Muhammad): Who provides for you from the sky and the earth? Or who owns hearing and sight? Who brings out the living from the dead and brings out the dead from the living? Who disposes the affairs? They will say Allaah." Soorah An-Naml(27):64 And Allaah the Most High said: "Say (O Muhammad): Whose is the earth and everything in it, if you truly know? They will say it belongs to Allaah." Soorah Al-Muminoon (23):84-85

www.al-athariyyah.com

The Importance Of Tawheed, Part 4 of 8

- Shaykh 'Allaamah Saalih al-Fawzaan

So we see that they (polytheists) were those who affirmed that Allaah was the Creator, the Sustainer, He was the One who possesses that which is in the heavens and the earth and that which is between them. However, they were still polytheists and this did not enter them into al-Islaam. It will not enter them into Al-Islaam until they affirm and acknowledge that all worship belongs to Allaah and they single Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) out with all worship and they abandon the worship of the statues, idols, trees and stones. Also, they purify their worship for Allaah. They then will become Muslims. This is due to the fact that Tawheed ur-Ruboobiyyah (Unity in Allaahs Lordship) is not sufficient. Abu Jahl affirmed this (Ar-Ruboobiyyah) and he was the leader of disbelief. Also, Abu Lahab and all of the disbelievers affirmed Tawheed urRuboobiyyah and that Allaah was the Creator, Sustainer, the One who brings life and gives death, the Disposer of the affairs, but they worshipped statues along with Him, such as Al-Laat, Al-Uzza and Al-Manaat. They affirmed Tawheed ur-Ruboobiyyah, but they were polytheists in Tawheed ulUloohiyyah, and Tawheed ur-Ruboobiyyah is of no benefit without Tawheed ulUloohiyyah. Therefore it is necessary that Tawheed ul-Uloohiyyah is fulfilled. Tawheed ulUloohiyyah is to single Allaah out with worship and to abandon the worship of anything other than Him. As Allaah the Most High said: "And We sent to every nation a Messenger commanding them to worship Allaah alone and to stay away from at-Taaghoot (false deities)" Soorah An-Nahl (16):36 And Allaah the Most High said: "Worship Allaah and do not associate anything as partners along with Him." Soorah An-Nisaa (4):36

Who are the people that the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) was commanded to fight? Surely they are those who said that "Allaah the Most High is the Creator, the Sustainer and the One who gives life and brings death." The Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: "I was commanded to fight the people until they say that None has the right to be worshipped except for Allaah. And if they said this, then their blood and their wealth would be safe and protected from me."

The Importance Of Tawheed, Part 4 of 8

- Shaykh 'Allaamah Saalih al-Fawzaan

The polytheists used to affirm that Allaah was the Creator, the Sustainer, and the One who disposes of the affairs. They affirmed and acknowledged the fact that their false deities that they worshipped did not create, nor did they sustain and neither did they dispose of anything. Rather, they claim that they only took them as intercessors and intermediaries, between themselves and Allaah. This is what they claimed. Therefore, even though they affirmed Tawheed ur-Ruboobiyyah, when the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said to them: "Say: 'None has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone" (La ilaaha illallaah). They (the polytheists) said, as Allaah the Most High informs us in the Quraan: "They said: has he made the Aaliha (false deities), all of them, into one ilaah? Verily this is a strange thing!' And the leaders from amongst them went about saying, "Go on and remain constant to your Aaliha (false deities). Verily, this is a thing designed against you. We have not heard the likes of this in the Religion of these latter days. This is nothing but an invention!" Soorah Saad (38):5-7 So they disbelieved in the Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) and they accused him of lying when he called them to Tawheed ul-Uloohiyyah, even though they affirmed Tawheed ur-Ruboobiyyah. Allaah the Most High said in another verse: "Verily if it is said to them, Say: La ilaaha illaAllaah they will turn away in pride. And they said, Are we going to abandon our Aaliha (false deities), for the sake of a mad poet? Nay! He (Muhammad) has come with the truth and he confirms the Messengers." By Shaykh 'Allaamah Saalih al-Fawzaan Translated by Abu Abdillaah Hassan As-Somali

The Call of all the Prophets and Messengers was One All of the Messengers called to La ilaaha illaAllaah (none has the right to be worshipped except Allaah alone in truth). Muhammad (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) who was the seal of them, the Imaam of them, and the most noble of them confirmed their call and called to at-Tawheed. If it was sufficient for them to only affirm that Allaah the Most High was the Creator and the Sustainer, the Prophet (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) would not have said to the polytheists of Quraysh, "Say: La ilaaha illaAllaah". Therefore this establishes that Tawheed ur-Ruboobiyyah was not the Tawheed that was being sought from the polytheists. Rather it was a necessity for them to single Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) out with all worship. As Allaah the Most High said: "O mankind! Worship your Lord who created you and those who were before you, so that you may become al-Muttaqoon. He who has made the earth as a resting place for you and the sky as a canopy and sent down water from the sky and brought forth therewith fruits as a provision for you. And do not set up rivals with Allaah, while you know that He alone has the right to be worshipped." Soorah Al-Baqarah (2):21-22 Meaning: Do not set up and ascribe partners with Allaah in worship when you know that there is no Creator or Sustainer except Allaah. You affirm that your gods do not create and they do not sustain. Allaah the Most High used that which they had affirmed as a proof against them in that which they denied from Tawheed AlUloohiyyah. Therefore, happiness of the slave depends upon Tawheed ulUloohiyyah. It is mandatory that we fulfil its rights. It is binding that we call to it and we clarify it to the people. For an individual to say "La ilaaha illaAllaah", but he worships the graves, trees, stones and seeks to come close to the Awliya, the Saaliheen (righteous people), and also the Jinn and the Angels by some actions of worship, then he is a polytheist and a disbeliever in Allaah. He either affirms Tawheed al-Uloohiyyah or he will be punished.

Allaah the Most High said: "Fight them until there is no more fitnah (disbelief, polytheism), so that the Religion will be all for Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Taaala) alone. But if they cease, then certainly Allaah is All-Seer of what they do." Soorah Al-Anfaal (8):39-40 When Allaah the Most High said in this verse, "Fight them until there is no more fitnah" the fitnah being referred to in this verse is Shirk (associating partners with Allaah). So that the Religion will be all for Allaah alone. No part of the Religion is for the grave, statue, wali, angel, jinn or any of mankind. Rather, all of the Religion belongs to Allaah alone. This Religion (the meaning of which is worship) like the Prayer, Fasting, supplication, invocation, fear, hope, a vow, dread, fervent desire, slaughtering and other than this, all of these actions are for Allaah alone, all of them! So the person who divides the Religion taking a part for Allaah and another part for other than Him, like the grave or the wali, then he is a polytheist with Allaah and a disbeliever in Allaah. Allaah the Most High said in a Hadeeth Qudsi: "Verily I am free from associating any partners with Me. So whoever does an action of which he associates with Me, other than Me, then I have left him and left his Shirk (associating partners with Me)." And in another narration, "I am free from it, and this action is for the one whom he associated with Me." This clearly demonstrates that Allaah the Most High does not accept any action that contains any type of Shirk. He does not accept the action unless it is done solely and purely for His Face alone, and it is a necessity that it be in accordance to the legislation brought by His Messenger (Sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam). Similarly, it is a necessity that we free ourselves from the polytheists, and free ourselves from and abstain from Ash-Shirk. Allaah the Most High said: "Verily Ibraaheem was an Ummah (a leader), obedient to Allaah, he was Haneefah (worshipped Allaah alone and stayed away from Shirk) and he was not from the polytheists." Soorah An-Nahl (16):120 Allaah the Most High likewise said:

"And remember when Ibraaheem said to his father and his people: Verily I am free of that which you worship except for Him who did create me. And verily He will guide me." Soorah Az-Zukhruf (43):26-27 Also Allaah the Most High said: "Indeed there has been an excellent example for you in Ibraaheem and those who were with him, when they said to their people: Verily we are free from you and what you worship besides Allaah. We have rejected you and there has appeared amongst us and between us hostility and hatred forever until you believe in Allaah alone. " Soorah Al-Mumtahanah (60):4 This is the Religion of Ibraaheem (Alayhi salaatu was salaam) and Allaah the Most High said: "We have revealed to you that you shall follow the Religion of Ibraaheem who was Haneefah (meaning that he worshipped Allaah alone and he turned away from ash-Shirk) and he was not from the polytheists." Soorah An-Nahl (16):123
