LAB REPORT TEMPLATE: All parts are included and typed in each lab unless specified First and last name Course, Unit, lesson number Date PROJECT TITLE Introduction: Tell about what you are going to do or what you expect to find. This should be about 1 or 2 sentences. ALWAYS INCLUDED Hypothesis: This is your best guess on what the outcome of the experiment will be. If it is not needed, like in this experiment you still need to include it and say not needed. Materials: This should be in a list form. Here is an example: Soap Water Beaker thermometer Procedures: The procedures need to be detailed enough for someone to repeat your assignment. You can copy these for the lab directions or you can paraphrase. This will be in every lesson, unless it is a research paper. Here is an example: 1. Measure a long sidewalk to decide how long my model can be. 2. Use the chart to calculate the distance from the Sun to Pluto in cm by dividing the AU distance multiplying by 10 and then by 2. 3. Mark a place for the sun on the sidewalk with chalk. 4. Measure the distances to the other planets using my scale and draw them in relative position. 5. Take a picture of my model to submit to my teacher. Data: THIS IS CRITICAL FOR EVERY LAB. Research papers are the exception Data will typically include a table and sometimes a graph. Here is an example: Planet Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune Pluto Distance to Sun (km) 5.97 * 107 1.08 * 108 1.50 * 108 2.28 * 108 7.78 * 108 1.43 * 109 2.87 * 109 4.50 * 109 5.92 * 109 Distance to Sun (AU) 0.39 .72 1 1.52 5.20 9.54 19.19 30.07 39.48 Scale Distance (1 AU = 10cm) Scale Distance (1 AU = 2 m)

Analyze Your Data/Conclude and Apply: Sometimes these are separate sections, sometimes they are listed together. ALWAYS INCLUDED You will find the questions for each lab in the lab manual or in the book. You MUST write the questions and the answers. You also need to use complete sentences. Proxima Centauri, the closest start to the Sun, is about 270,000 AU from the Sun. Based on your scale, how much string would you need to place this star on your model? Based on my answer I would need to use X meters of string to place the star on my model. A closing statement about what you learned, what you altered and what went wrong.

ENZYME REACTION
In this lesson you will design a lab to determine if temperature affects an enzyme reaction. Read the Preparation and Plan the Experiment sections before you begin the lab. Discuss the procedure you plan to use with your Learning Coach before you execute it. If a thermometer is not available, use descriptors such as very hot, warm, and cool rather than temperature measurements to describe the hotness or coldness of the water. You may use a pot rather than a beaker and a stove rather than a hot plate to heat the water. You will complete the lab independently rather than in a group, as the lab instructs. Print the Science Lab Grading Rubric and refer to it as you design the lab, collect data, and answer the Analyze and Conclude questions. Complete the Design Your Own BioLab, Does temperature affect an enzyme reaction? on pp. 164165 in Biology. Type the final draft of your lab in a Microsoft Word document. If your lab contains data that you cannot format in a Microsoft Word document or any other suggested Drop Box file type (Portable Document Format file (.pdf), Portable Network Graphics image (.png), PowerPoint Presentation (.ppt), Microsoft Excel Worksheet (.xls)), plan to mail or webmail that portion of the lab to your teacher, rather than submit it through the Drop Box. BELOW IS A TEMPLATE TO FOLLOW FOR YOUR LAB.

STUDENT NAME CLASS DATE

Does Temperature affect an enzyme reaction? INTRODUCTION: Please include a brief introduction Materials: Clock or timer, 400 m-L beaker, kitchen knife, COMPLETE THE LIST Hypothesis: Procedures: Gather your materials Slice potatoes so that they are 5-mm thick Test the first potato room temperature ( Test A) Fill the Beaker with water place a potato slice in the water and cool the water to 10 degrees Celsius and test it. ( Test B ) 5. Fill the Beaker with water place a potato slice in the water then heat the water to 100 degrees Celsius and test it. ( Test C) 6. To test for peroxidase activity, add 1 drop of hydrogen peroxide to the potato slice and observe what happens. Make sure the potato is not in the water when you add the peroxidase. PLEASE INCLUDE ALL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS IN COMPLETE SENTENCES

HELPFUL HINTS

If you do not have a beaker, you can use a cup; make sure it is heat/cold resistant. You need to heat/cool the potato, remove it and add the peroxidase, but do it quickly so the temperature is as close to given temperature as possible. If you do not have supplies, call teacher for alternate materials/assessment.

MODELING RECOMBINANT DNA

Scientists first developed techniques for gene manipulation by experimenting with bacteria. Today these techniques are used on a wide variety of organisms, including plants and mice. In this lesson you will model recombinant DNA technology, which is a form of gene manipulation. Read the Preparation and Procedure sections before you begin the lab. You may use colored paper rather than white paper to complete the lab. Print the Science Lab Grading Rubric and refer to it as you complete the lab.

Complete the Investigate BioLab, Modeling Recombinant DNA, on pp. 354355 in Biology. Create the data table and type the answers to the Analyze and Conclude questions in a Microsoft Word document. You are not required to submit your model to your teacher. MAKE SURE THAT YOU INCLUDE ALL ASPECTS OF THE LAB REPORT SUPPLIED AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS HANDOUT. HERE IS A COPY OF THE DATA TABLE YOU WILL NEED TO FILL OUT FOR THE LAB Data: TERM GENE INSERTION PLASMID RESTRICTION ENZYME STICKY ENDS RECOMBINANT DNA BIOLAB MODEL

HELPFUL HINTS

DONT make it harder than it is. The book shows you exactly how they want you to cut the DNA model.it will end up making a DNA ring. In the table explain in detail

Make sure on the questions you dont just write yes or no answers, and include the questions as well. In this lesson you will simulate radioactive decay using pennies. Read the Preparation and Procedure sections before you begin the lab. As you complete the procedures, remember not to return the pennies that land tail side up to the shoe box. Print the Science Lab Grading Rubric and refer to it as you complete the lab.

Objectives: Simulate the radioactive decay of K-40 into Ar-40 with pennies Collect data to determine the amount of K-40 present after several half-lives Graph your data and use its values to determine the age of rocks

Complete the Investigate BioLab, Determining a Rock's Age, on pp. 386387 in Biology. Create the data table and type the answers to the Analyze and Conclude questions in a Microsoft Word document. Use either a Microsoft Excel worksheet or graph paper to create your graph. If you use graph paper to create your graph, plan to mail this portion of your lab report to your teacher, rather than submit it through the Drop Box. HELPFUL HINTS
Include the graph and the data table in the lab; dont make it as an attachment. If you make your data table/graph in excel just copy and paste. If you need help call. The graph should look relatively close to the one above, but DONT COPY IT, DO YOUR OWN
