Seasonal greetings from Christ the King and Zion Lutheran

75

Pastor Nate Loer and family wish all of you a very merry Christmas.

Warm holiday wishes from Christ the King and Fr. Peter, Pastor.

For many of us, we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the season. There are cards to be sent, cookies to be baked, gifts to wrap, places to go and people to see. Not to mention everything that is part of our normal lives. Sometimes life seems so busy. It is not that we choose for this to happen; it just happens. At times like this, we need to

pause and remember that God wants to be part of our lives. We need to remember that God loves us, and that God came to be with us. It has now been five years since I had the opportunity to travel to the Holy Land on pilgrimage. Yet, it is at this time of the year that I recall visiting Bethlehem and kissing the star that

marks the birth of Jesus. For Christians all over the world, Christmas recalls this wonderful event. Some people might debate if Jesus was truly born in a stable. Others might try and deny him entirely. For Christians, Christmas recalls a time of peace when God entered the world. Might I encourage you to take a minute and pause? Even if you dont feel the presence of God, might you pause? Take a minute to breathe. Feel

the fresh air come into your lungs. Relax. If you want, you might think of the presence of God in your life. Think of the child Jesus, and how Jesus is the reason for the season. On behalf of Christ the King Catholic Church of Browerville, St. Joseph Catholic Church of Clarissa, and St. Joseph Catholic Church of Bertha, I extend warm Christmas blessings to you and your family. May the peace of Christ be with you this year and remain with you always. ~Fr. Peter, Pastor

MnDOT reminds property owners of reflector requirements along highways

Property owners along state highways are reminded to use only blue or clear reflectors when marking driveway entrances and other objects on highway rights of way, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. People installing reflectors on the highway right of way need to follow these guidelines: Reflectors posted near mailboxes and driveways should be blue or clear in color and at least three inches wide. Reflectors should be doublesided and positioned so they can be seen from both directions. Driveway reflectors should be posted at least 12 feet from the outside edge of the shoulder and no more than five feet above the ground. Reflectors should never be placed on mailboxes or permanent posts, including red and orange colored reflectors and any type of reflective tape. Motorists may confuse reflectors with vehicle lights.

Until next week-end
earlier but there is still room in the freezer and a person can never make too much jerky. We had just enough snow to cover the ground making it easy to spot deer in the woods. The ground was not completely frozen under the snow, making walking in those woods treacherous. If a person did not slip and fall because of the skiff of snow, the mud beneath it would insure a fall. Driving to the top gate, I knew I had pushed my luck with driving further than a person should. The farther I drove, the farther I would have to walk back when I got my truck stuck. It made starting my hunt at the top gate a logical choice. The plan was to stalk through the snow silenced timber and sneak up on a sleeping deer. When it jumped up, I would shoot it, drag it back to the truck, and spend the rest of the afternoon making steaks and jerky. I love it when a plan comes together. I had not walked a hundred yards from the truck when a doe jumped up not twenty feet away. Needless to say, I was a bit startled. I shouldered my shotgun, drew down on the rapidly retreating deer and fired just as she ran past a small hickory tree. The deer was not injured but I am afraid the shot was fatal to the tree. There has been offers from people willing to cut it and have the tree mounted for me. Santa, I would like a kitchen play set, transformer, and a Mario DS game. I would also like to thank Santa for my presents last year. Jackson Marcyes, pre-K To Santa, I would like a Leap Pad Leap Frog, clothes for my baby, and to wish Santa a Merry Christmas! Emerson Johnson, pre-K To Santa, I would like a princess castle. Gia Goligowski, pre-K Dear Santa, I would like the movie Cars 2 this year. Your friend, Aidan Claseman, pre-K Dear Santa, For Christmas I want a big tractor set. My brother Jacob would be happy too. I want a John Deere Bobcat with 10 different scoops. I want a trailer set. Phillip Buhl, pre-K Dear Santa, I wish for a puppy and a toy semi truck. Do you still have Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? Thank you for the toy semi truck I got last year. Your friend, Garrett Christian, Kindergarten A persons stealth is pretty well ruined after announcing their presence with a shotgun blast. Everything in the area now knew I was sneaking around in their woods. I hiked over to twin sluices where deer may still be bedded in spite of the noise I had made in the adjoining timber. My footsteps were perfectly silent on the snow and wet leaves. I tried to avoid stepping on twigs or letting branches brush my clothes. It felt right as I moved slowly up the hill into the old growth oaks. The wind was in my face as I neared the crest of the hill. Deer would be just over the top and would neither be able to hear nor smell me. I pulled up my shotgun to the ready position and stepped slowly forward. A doe jumped up, turned, and stared at me as I peaked around a large oak tree. When I put my left foot down to steady my shot, my boot slipped on a snow covered tree root. I fell forward, managing a half twist before I hit the ground. This quick thinking maneuver protected my gun and only did minor injury to my body. Hobbling back to the truck with thoughts of broken ribs passing through my mind, I decided if the deer population needs to be controlled, it might be best to loosen the restrictions on non-residents. I know I have had enough deer hunting, at least until next week-end. Dear Santa, For Christmas I would like a Barbie. Is Rudolph ready to go? Rhianna Buhl, Kindergarten Dear Santa, I want a real motorcycle and a 4-wheeler. I want a monster costume. I like Rudolph. Gauge Carstensen, Kindergarten Santa, I want a scooter for Christmas and a costume of Captain Hook. I also want a lunch bag. I love your reindeer and Rudolph. Scott Ball, Kindergarten Dear Santa, I want a chopper and a chopper box for Christmas. Trevor May, pre-K Dear Santa, For Christmas I want a Nintendo DS. I would like some new books because I like to read. I would also like brand new pencils so I can do work with them. Trina Schultz, Kindergarten Dear Santa, Hi! I am working hard in school. I want snow before Christmas. How is rudolph? Is he alright? How cold is it up there? Can I have a surprise present? By: Marissa Callahan

Most fire deadly week of the year

Dear Editor: The period between Christmas Eve and New Years Day is typically the most fire-deadly week of the year in Minnesota. Cooking, candles, decorations and fireplaces are the main culprits, but in every case, lack of caution plays a role. When holiday traditions add fire threats and we fail to take additional precautions, the outcome can quickly turn a holiday into a disaster. As your State Fire Marshal, I ask you to read the information below, clip it out and review it with your family. Perhaps youll hang it on the refrigerator with other special reminders and tokens of affection for your loved ones. Cooking: The number-one cause of residential fires because distracted cooks forget to watch the stovetop. Never leave a hot burner unattended; grease fires start in seconds. Keep clothing, clutter and children away from the stove, and your kitchen will be more fire-safe. Candles: Candles belong in sturdy containers or holders, far from curtains, greenery, paper, gifts, and childrens reach. Never leave them burning unattended. Decorations: Water your natural tree every day. A fresh, green tree will hardly burn; a dry one can ignite an entire room in seconds. Be sure light cords are in good condition and dont overload electrical sockets. Finally, keep greenery and heat sources three feet apart and no fresh greens on the fireplace mantel! Fireplaces: Never burn wrapping paper in the fireplace; its a frequent cause of chimney fires. If you havent had your chimney inspected for a year or more, do it before you light that crackling holiday fire and the creosote build-up turns it into something very unpleasant. Please share these tips with the people you love. Your Minnesota Department of Public Safety State Fire Marshal Division wishes you peace and joy during the holidays and throughout the year. Yours in Fire Safety, Jerry Rosendahl Minnesota State Fire Marshal

By Walter Scott Iowa has a very strange way of allocating deer licenses. Nonresidents, who are willing to pay any amount of money for a tag to have the opportunity to hunt deer are lucky if they can obtain one every three or four years. A resident of the state can purchase an almost unlimited number of tags. If a person is a landowner, they get at least one free deer tag and the opportunity to buy as many as they want at a very cheap price. I must admit, it makes my hunting inexpensive, but my wife and I can only eat a couple of deer per year. The deer population is out of control, the state says they need more money, but they will not allow more non-residents in to hunt. A person must have to be a bureaucrat to understand the logic. Since we are running low on hunters, I went out Saturday to fulfill my civic responsibility by thinning the deer herd. I got one

School Board approves negotiations with Robert Schaefer for 2012/2013 school year
By Venus King Pat Sutlief, Principal, gave his report at the monthly Browerville Public School Board meeting, Monday December 12, 2011. In his report he stated that on December 13 the National Guard was bringing a 90 foot inflatable obstacle course for the Phy. Ed. Classes to run through. Also during the week of Christmas Concert preparations, the PE classes will be bowling. The 10th grade students will be taking the PLAN ACT test, (a prep test for the ACT test). The Explore test will be given to 8th graders and the Juniors will be taking the ASVAB test. All these assessments are good tools for students to prepare for placement exams like the ACTs or Accuplacer tests. BPA (Business Professionals of America) are selling Tiger Cards. They are also preparing for BPA competition held near the end of January. FFA will be attending the Poultry, Fish and Wildlife, Meats and Small Animals competition on January 12, 2012. Terry Boone was approved as the Drivers Education Instructor for the 2011/2012 School Year. Approval was given for the Behind the Wheel Driver Education Instructor to receive a salary of $20 per hour. Fees approved for the Behind the Wheel Drivers Training is as follows; Residents/students attending full time Browerville High School (fee includes six hours behind the wheel training) - $190. Extra hours are $40 per hour. Non Browerville School District residents the fee will be $250 and extra training hours to be $45 per hour. The board approved hiring Amy Davis as the Jr. High Girls Basketball Coach, Justin Berg as head Wrestling Coach for the Browerville/Eagle Valley Broncos and Ben Duel as Assistant Wrestling Coach for the Broncos. The board approved and authorized the School Board Negotiating Committee to begin negotiations with Robert Schaefer Superintendent for the 2012/2013 school year. Contracts approved were Pat Sutlief, K-12 Principal, Darla Schaefer, Business Manager, Walt Lucas, Head Custodian, Roger Irsfeld, Computer Technician and Ann Noska, Head Cook. Food Service report showed a total of 15,203 breakfast and lunches were served in November. The most popular meal is Hamburger/ Cheeseburger. Four hundred sixtyseven hamburger/cheeseburgers were served one day with 40 students coming back for seconds. After the bills were paid, the meeting was adjourned.

School lunch changes considered by EV School Board

By Rin Porter At its Dec. 12 meeting, the Eagle Valley School Board heard a report from food service manager Linda Warren about the results of a recent audit of the schools meal program. Warren said she had been cited by the school lunch auditor for not providing enough bread or enough fruits and vegetables to K-3 students. Warren explained that state rule requirements and the Eagle Valley districts current regulations were requiring her to place too much food on the childrens trays much more than they could eat - so she had reduced the amounts on her own. Warren and Superintendent Jim Madsen explained to board members that a district must choose between two options for school meals for Kindergarten through Third Grade students: (1) prepare five food items and require that students take all of them, or (2) offer students a choice of items, but place a minimum of three items on the tray. The current EV board had mandated the first option (put all five food items on a tray and not give students a choice). In addition, Warren indicated that some school lunchroom monitors had been trying to force students to eat all the items on their tray, which resulted in conflicts because the students did not get to choose the items and did not want to eat some of them. State regulations require two pieces of bread to be put on a tray for K-3 students if option 1 is chosen by a district. Warren indicated that many or most children would not eat all that bread, and it would be thrown away. So she had been putting only one slice on a childs tray. She also said older students, especially those in high school, like more bread and would like second helpings of some main dishes or side dishes, if food were left over after everyone received a serving of lunch. The districts current policies did not allow Warren to offer second helpings, unless a student paid for another meal. No students were paying for seconds, and food was left over on many school days. It doesnt go to waste, Warren explained. I had some sausages left over from today, I froze them, and Ill cut them up and put them in the baked beans next time. But I could tell that some of the high school students would have liked to have a second sausage today. Regarding the fruits and vegetables requirements, Warren said she was not aware that the Department of Agriculture school food program rules had changed, and that she now was required to provide a full cup of fruits and vegetables - usually 1/2 cup of each - in every lunch menu for K-3 students. She had been providing a choice of either 1/2 cup of fruit or 1/2 cup of vegetables. She said she would make the change immediately to comply with the one cup rule. The board discussed all these issues, and Superintendent Madsen said he would find out what steps had to be taken to allow the district to make the change from option 1 (requiring five items) to option 2 (allowing students to choose three out of five items), and to stop charging for second helpings. The board also seemed to reach consensus that school lunch monitors should not be trying to force children to eat what was put on their trays. In addition to the food discussion, the board considered a number of other agenda items. One of them was the need for a Special Board Meeting to discuss school administrator options for next year. The meeting will be held at 6 PM, Wednesday, Dec. 21, at Eagle Bend. The board was not sure whether the meeting would be an open meeting or a closed meeting, because it involved a personnel issue. The board also accepted the resignation of Speech/Language Pathology supervisor Nancy Thul, who is leaving to accept another position. The board accepted the letter from the Browerville Public Schools dissolving the cooperative pairing of Browerville and Eagle Valley districts in wrestling, effective with the beginning of the 2012-2013 school year. Finally, the board approved a Memorandum of Understanding between itself and Superintendent Madsen about the terms of his employment. The board adjourned the open portion of the meeting at 7:08 PM and began a closed meeting to discuss labor negotiations. The board reopened the meeting at 7:30 PM to hold a public hearing for Truth and Taxation purposes. Two members of the public attended the Truth and Taxation meeting. Their only question was to ask the board about a rumor they heard on the radio about Amish people buying up lots of agricultural land, which the public believed was making taxes increase. Mr. Madsen commented that Amish people are citizens of the district and they pay property taxes like everyone else. Then, he proceeded to present information about the last 10 years of school levies and taxation in the Eagle Valley district. He showed statistics about how the levies increased each year between 2001 and 2009, because the State of Minnesota decreased its contribution to the school district each year, and the district had to raise its levy just to stay even. But in 2009, the levy dropped after the school district paid off one of its bonds early, saving taxpayers $134,000. The 2010 levy decreased as well, and the 2011 levy is also a decrease. Following Madsen s presentation, there were no additional comments. The board voted to approve the 2011 levy of $389,502.60, and the meeting was adjourned at 7:42 PM.

Christmas Greetings
Pastor Nate Loer Zion Lutheran Church Browerville, Minnesota 320-594-6161 Christmas blessings and joy to all of you from your friends and neighbors at Zion Lutheran Church! Despite the craziness that can sometimes come to our homes this time of year, it truly is a magical season for me and I hope it is for you. I find such joy in the trees, the lights, the smells, the sounds, and the togetherness that these seasons of Advent and Christmas bring. We havent done much sledding this year, but we have still enjoyed getting outside long enough to be chilled from our noses to our toes what a great feeling to come inside after outdoor play and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and a Christmas cookie or two. But, of course, the most important part of this season is the hope that the Christ-Child brings to us. As we remember that first Christmas 2,000 years ago the babe in the manger, Mary, Joseph, the stable full of animals, and the visit from the shepherds as directed by the chorus of angels let us marvel in awe at this God of ours who acted in such an amazing way all those years ago. And even more, let us trust that this same God is alive and acting in amazing ways in and through us today, too. Wed love to have you worship with us on Christmas Eve, December 24th. We have two candlelight services at 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. And on Sunday, December 25th, we will gather for worship at 10 a.m. All are welcome to come and celebrate this God who has acted in the past, is working in our lives now, and will come in glory and power in the future, too. Christmas joy and peace be with you all.
