Homework (Mondai in Japanese)

Mondai
Mondai includes listening and written sections and is located at the conclusion of each lesson. The answers kotae in Japanese for the mondai can be found at the back of the textbook in a separate booklet. Do the mondai while that lesson is in progress. Always check the answers (kotae) as soon as you have done the work to make the necessary corrections and learn from your mistakes. You may prefer to do the mondai with classmates, but remember you alone are responsible for the corrections. It is permissible to write your work directly in the text book or you may prefer using a

2 separate notebook. Your mondai will be spot checked in class periodically. Both midterm and the final exam material will be taken from the mondai. Therefore it is most important that you work on it regularly, keep it safe and neatly in file and bring it to class at all time. Review A,B,C,D, E

Fukushuu
These reviews come after every 6 lessons or so. It is an excellent idea to review what we have learned by doing the review exercises. These will be used for the midterm and final exams as well. After the Table of Contents you will see two pages of faces of characters that appear in the textbooks. These faces with identifications in English can be found in the yellow textbook, Characters in the Conversations. There is a glossary at the end of the pink book. When you are lost with certain words, look them up here. They are listed in the Japanese syllabic order : etc. There will be a listing of lessons where the words were first introduced.

II. Minna no Nihongo Translation & Grammatical Notes (yellow cover)

Use Characters in the Conversations at the beginning of the book before the Content to help you follow the threads of conversations in the book. The characters are:

III. Minna no Nihongo Kanji (Yellow with squares) There are three (3) parts to this text book:
Part I: INTRODUCTION TO KANJI Kanji are made from pictures 1 & 2 Part II: INTRODUCTORY LESSONS Basic strokes of Kanji, like lines, squares, angle, curve, dots etc. Part III: MAIN LESSONS Unit 1~20 (=lessons 1~25 in pink book) Each unit divides into 1) A list of kanji to be learned in the unit 2) Practice A 3) Practice B 4) Tasks (Also called Doctor Kanji or Kanji Hakase in Japanese) As there is not enough time during class, you are requested to study and practice these kanji on your own after some introductions by the instructor at the beginning of semester.

4 There will be quizzes during the year to check on your progress. These will form part of your quiz grade.

IV. Nihongo: Kana - An Introduction to the Japanese Syllabary

Finish this exercise book as soon as the semester starts and finish it as soon as possible so that you can start reading Japanese syllables comfortably and use Minna no Nihongo effectively. Both hiragana and katakana will be part of the quizzes through out the semester.
