Generating the Clutch or Brake Torque

Inertia Dynamics clutches and brakes are designed to start and stop inertial loads when the voltage is turned on. When DC voltage is applied to the coil, the magnetic force caused by the magnetic flux pulls the armature across the air gap against the force of the zero-backlash spring attached to the armature. The mating of the armature and rotor face produce torque. When DC voltage is interrupted, the magnetic field collapses, and the zero-backlash spring retracts the armature from the rotor face. There is no residual torque produced.

Special Features of the IDI Clutches and Brakes

Precision oiltite sleeve and ball bear-

ings for long life. Zero-backlash armature assembly providing a spring release for reliable and precise disengagement. Stationary field coil assembly means no slip rings or brushes. All parts effectively protected against corrosion. Asbestos-free friction material. Non-standard coil voltages available upon request. Metric bore sizes available upon request.

Electromagnetic Friction Clutches & Brakes Determining the Clutch or Brake Size
First, determine which style clutch or brake you need. The type of unit selected depends upon the function to be performed. Next, determine the size of the clutch or brake. There are two methods you can use to calculate the dynamic torque required. Td =

Burnishing
Burnishing is a wearing-in or mating process which will ensure the highest possible output torques. Burnishing is accomplished by forcing the clutch or brake to slip rotationally when energized. Best results are obtained when the unit is energized at 3040% of rated voltage and forced to slip for a period of 23 minutes at a low speed of 100200 RPM Units in applications with high inertial loads and high speed will usually become burnished in their normal operating mode. Whenever possible, it is desirable to perform the burnishing operation in the final location so the alignment of the burnished faces will not be disturbed. For additional information on burnishing procedures ask for burnishing spec. #040-1001.

NOTES:
1. Torque decay time is dependent on the type of arc suppression circuit used. Decay times shown in table assume use of a diode in parallel with the coil for arc suppression. If no arc suppression is used, torque will decay almost instantly. 2. Actual response times depend on several factors such as inertia being accelerated or decelerated, speed, load torque, and type of switching used. 3. Time to full torque can be shortened by applying overexcitation voltages up to 50 times the rated coil voltage. 4. The time to full torque is also dependent on the voltage supply. If the clutch or brake is underpowered (low voltage), a decrease in torque will result. The clutch or brake should be sized based upon the worst-case voltage condition. The DC voltage supply should be filtered full wave for highest efficiency. Half wave DC voltage will result in lower torque output.

*Slightly higher torque ratings may be allowable for some speeds. Consult Inertia Dynamics.

The required size is determined mostly from the clutch or brake torque needed. The inertia to be accelerated or braked, the speed, the acceleration or braking times, duty cycle, and life requirements are all considerations in clutch or brake sizing. Other conditions to be considered are ambient temperatures, humidity, dust, and contaminants which may affect the clutch or brake performance. For these reasons, clutch and brake performance should be evaluated under actual application conditions.

*Slightly higher torque ratings may be allowable for some speeds. Consult Inertia Dynamics.

Clutch & Brake Location

Whenever possible, the clutch or brake should be mounted to the highest-speed shaft. This will allow a clutch or brake with the lowest possible torque to be used. However, the maximum allowable shaft speed should not be exceeded.

Generating the Braking Torque

Inertia Dynamics FSB/FSBR spring applied brakes are designed to decelerate or park inertial loads when the voltage is turned off, either intentionally or accidentally, as in the case of a power failure. The friction disc with the hex hub is coupled to the shaft to be braked but is capable of moving axially. Through several compression springs, the axial force acts against the axially moving clapper plate which compresses the armature (friction disc) against the pressure plate. Brake torque is generated on both faces of the friction disc.

When DC voltage is applied to the coil, the magnetic force caused by the magnetic flux pulls the clapper across the air gap against the force of the compression springs. The friction disc is released, and the brake is free of torque.

Special Features of the IDI Brake

Several compression springs on the outermost radius of the friction disc increase the torque-to-size ratio and provide greater repeatability. Factory-set air gap needs no adjustments and is practically maintenance-free.

All parts effectively protected against corrosion. Advanced friction material technology for long life and high torque. Always asbestos-free. Two mounting styles offered to accommodate your specific application. Manual release brakes available as standard or custom-designed for your needs. Metric bore sizes available upon request.

Selecting a Spring Applied Brake

Determining the Brake Size
Static Applications
A static application is one in which there is no dynamic braking. In this mode the brake is used to hold the inertial load in a fixed or parked position. Match your required torque to the static torque rating of the brake. Be sure the brake torque exceeds your requirement. A service factor of 1.4 is recommended. Where: TS = Static torque 0.80 = derating factor The brake size can also be determined using the selection charts. Find the intersection of the prime mover horsepower (HP) and shaft speed at the brake using the selection charts. (Fig. A & B). The relationship between the horsepower and speed to determine the dynamic torque required is expressed as: Td = Where: Td =

Spring Applied Friction Brakes

Average dynamic torque, lb.in. P= Horsepower, HP N= Shaft speed at the brake S.F = . Service Factor 63,025 = Constant

Additional formulas and conversion charts are found on pages 38 and 72.

Dynamic Applications
A dynamic application is one in which the brake decelerates an inertial load. To properly size the brake you need to calculate the dynamic torque required. There are two methods that can be used. Td =

Selecting a Spring Applied Brake

Selection Considerations
The required size is determined mostly from the brake torque needed. The inertia to be braked, the speed, the braking times, duty cycle, and life requirements are all considerations in brake sizing. Other conditions to be considered are ambient temperatures, humidity, dust, and contaminants which may affect the brake performance. For these reasons, brake performance should be evaluated under actual application conditions.

*Slightly higher torque ratings may be allowable for some speeds. Consult Inertia Dynamics.

Brake Location
Whenever possible, the brake should be mounted to the highest-speed shaft. This will allow a brake with the lowest possible torque to be used. However, the maximum allowable shaft speed should not be exceeded.

Burnishing
Burnishing is a wearing-in or mating process which will ensure the highest possible output torques. Burnishing is accomplished by forcing the brake to slip rotationally when energized. Best results are obtained when the unit is energized at 30-40% of rated voltage and forced to slip for a period of 2-3 minutes at a low speed of 100-200 RPM Units in applications with high inertial loads and high speed will usually become burnished in their normal operating mode. Whenever possible, it is desirable to perform the burnishing operation in the final location so the alignment of the burnished faces will not be disturbed. For additional information on burnishing procedures ask for burnishing spec. #040-1069.

Manual Release, Spring Applied Brake Type FSBR

Inertia Dynamics features a type FSBR015 spring applied brake with a manual release lever. The brake incorporates a lever which is rotated to mechanically engage the clapper plate. The clapper plate acts against the compression springs and allows the armature disc to spin freely. The brake is then free of torque. An optional microswitch is activated on the field assembly to disconnect power to your system in case of an accidental start-up with the brake manually released. To return the brake to normal operation, the lever is rotated to re-engage the brake and produce torque. Typical applications include wheelchairs, three-wheel carts/scooters, and fractional horsepower motors. The brake is available with a higher static torque rating for non-dynamic braking applications where only a statically engaged parking brake is needed. For variations on the manual release brake configuration, in support of high volume OEM applications, consult Inertia Dynamics.

When the clutch or brake is deenergized, a reverse voltage is generated in the coil. The reverse voltage can be very high and may cause damage to the coil and switch in the circuit. To protect the coil and switch, the voltage should be suppressed using an arc suppression circuit. Arc suppression does not affect the clutch or brake engagement time.

General Information
General Information
Inertia Dynamics offers a full line of wrap spring clutches and brakes. Both electrically and mechanically actuated units are available with four standard models as well as custom designs for all your applications.

Wrap Spring Clutches & Brakes Long Life

Wrap spring clutches and brakes are maintenance-free and require no adjustments for wear. Precision powdered metal sleeve bearings are permanently lubricated for long life. Since there are no slip revolutions in the clutch and brakes, there are virtually no wear particles generated.

Torque-to-Size Ratio
Wrap spring clutches offer high torque in a small package size. IDI clutches range in torque from 25 to 2500 lb.in. The torque is consistent, cycle after cycle. No burnishing is required.

Ease of Assembly
Wrap spring clutches and brakes are prepackaged and assembled for easy installation. There are no parts to assemble. Units are easy-to-install, one-piece designs.

Accuracy/Repeatability
Wrap spring clutches offer positive engagement with no slip. Engagement is virtually instantaneous. With a single revolution type clutch/brake, high repeatability is obtained. When engaged from a constantly rotating input, the output hub will rotate one revolution and stop. The error is 1, noncumulative. Every cycle is the same due to its fast response and accuracy. Multiple stops (2 and 4) can be obtained plus special modifications as required.

Typical Applications

Low Power Consumption

Wrap spring clutches offer low power consumption for their torque capability when compared to typical friction clutches and brakes.

Wrap Spring Clutches & Brakes

Model ISC Clutch Description

Principle of Operation Generating the Clutch Torque
De-Energized Fig. 1
The ISC clutch consists of five basic parts for operation: the free hub, shaft hub, control collar or armature, coil, and spring. The inside diameter of the spring is slightly larger than the outside diameter of the hubs. One end of the spring is fastened to the free hub, the other to the control collar. The control collar, free hub, and spring rotate together. The shaft hub remains stationary when the coil is deenergized. The coil is held stationary by a fixed pin in the anti-rotation tab and pilots on the shaft hub.
Shaft Hub Free Hub

Control Collar

Energized Fig. 2
When the coil is energized, the control collar is pulled against the shaft hub, causing the control collar to become fixed to the shaft hub. The spring is thereby wrapped down, which couples the free hub to the shaft hub. The torque is now transmitted through the spring. The magnetic force keeps the spring wrapped for full torque output.

For a complete application analysis and design considerations, refer to the Inertia Dynamics Wrap Spring Application Guide or the Application Data Form. Our engineering staff can assist you in selecting the proper clutch for your application.

High Torsion Spring

Design Considerations
All ISC clutches are unidirectional as opposed to our electromagnetic friction clutches, which operate bidirectionally. They provide positive engagement, with no slip, almost instantaneously. The time to engage the ISC clutch is directly related to the input speed. The slower your input speed, the longer it takes to reach full speed (page 42). The time to disengage depends upon voltage transients and your switching circuit. Your circuit will affect the disengagement time of the clutch. Suggested arc suppression circuits are shown on page 58. The ISC25 features a threeSold & Serviced By:

Selecting a Model ISC Clutch

Selecting the Clutch Size
Wrap spring clutches will engage consistently and accelerate to full speed almost instantaneously (23 milliseconds). To calculate your total load, use the following formulas: To calculate the inertia for a cylinder, the formula is: WR2 = 32 Where: WR2 = D= L= = x D4 x L x

Wrap Spring Clutches & Brakes

Selection Considerations
The clutch size is determined mostly from the clutch torque required. The inertia to be accelerated, the speed, load torque, duty cycle, and life requirements are all considerations in clutch sizing. Other conditions to be considered are ambient temperatures, humidity, dust, and contaminants which may affect the clutch performance. For these reasons, clutch performance should be evaluated under actual application conditions.

Clutch Torque
TC = WR2 x N + TF Cxt Where: TC = WR2 = N= C=

Approximate values for are: Steel .284 (7860) Aluminum .098 (2700) Plastic .047 (1300) Rubber .047 (1300) ISC clutches are rated by static torque. If your required torque exceeds the clutch rating, consult IDI engineering for assistance. Additional formulas and conversion charts are found on pages 58 and 59.

Maintenance
ISC clutches are maintenance-free. The clutch should be kept free of grease and oil for proper operation. The clutch is specially lubricated at the factory and should not be lubricated once installed.

Model SC Clutch Descriptions

Principles of Operation
The three basic parts in the wrap spring clutch are the input hub, output hub, and spring. The inside diameter of the spring is slightly smaller than the outside diameter of the two hubs. Rotation at the input hub in the direction of the arrow engages the spring and positively locks the two hubs together.

SC Series Clutch
SC clutches are mechanically actuated. They can be used in overrunning (OR), start/stop (SS) and single revolution (SR) applications.

b.) SC Start/Stop Clutch SS

In this mode, the control tang rotates with the input hub, thus engaging the clutch. When the stop collar locks the control tang, the spring unwraps, allowing the output hub to coast while the input hub continues to run.
Control Tang Output Input

Output Hub Wrap Spring Input Hub

a.) SC Overrunning Clutch OR

When the input hub is rotated in the direction shown, the spring wraps down and engages the input to the output hub. When the input hub is stopped or reversed, the spring unwraps, allowing the output hub to overrun. These clutches can also be used for backstopping and indexing. In the backstopping mode, either the input or output hub is attached to a fixed member, while the other hub is mounted on a rotating part. Rotation is permitted in one direction, but locked in reverse rotation. Indexing provides an accurate and smooth intermittent rotary output from reciprocating input in variable angular increments.
Output Input

Adding a control tang allows the spring to be disengaged, permitting the input hub to overrun.
Control Tang

Output Input

c.) SC Single Revolution Clutch SR

In this mode, another control tang is added to the spring and fixed to the output hub. When the stop collar engages the control tang, the output hub will not overrun. Remember, only a maximum of 10% of the load will be stopped with the SC single revolution clutch.

Model DCB Clutch Descriptions

DCB Series Clutch
The DCB clutch/brake is designed to start and stop a load. It will stop the load in the same position without any cumulative error. The DCB will stop any load that is able to start. The control tangs are used to hold open the clutch or brake spring, which are wrapped in opposite directions. When the clutch and brake control tangs rotate with the input hub, the input hub and output shaft are engaged by the clutch spring. When the stop collar locks the control tang of the brake spring, it wraps down engaging the output shaft to the brake hub. The clutch spring unwraps at the same time, allowing the input hub to freely rotate.

Wrap Spring Clutches & Brakes SC, DCB Selection

Function
First, determine the clutch or brake function. There are three basic functions: overrunning, start-stop, and single revolution. Determine which will best suit your application. Examples of typical applications are found on page 50. Use the comparison chart as a guide. Be sure your shaft diameter and maximum operating speed fall within the limits specified for the wrap spring clutch you select.

Selecting Models SC and DCB Clutches

B. For single revolution applications (Models DCB and SC single revolution clutches) TB = WR2 x N TF Cxt Where: TB = Torque required from wrap spring clutch, lb.in. (Nm) Total inertia reflected to the clutch, lb.in.2 (kgm2) Shaft speed at clutch or brake RPM Constant, use 3696 for English units and 9.55 for metric units Deceleration time, seconds, use .0015 for brake Frictional torque other than inertia, lb.in. (Nm) greater than zero, that amount if inertia must be added to the system. Minimum inertia formula (WK2 min). WK2 min (lb.-in.2) = t x (Ta x Td) x 3700 WK2CB N N = Speed t = time Ta = Activate Torque (see chart) Td = Drag Torque WK2CB = DCB Inertia (see chart)

WR2 =

N= C=

Load
If your load is not known, you can calculate it using the following formulas: A. For overrunning and start-stop clutches (Model SC start-stop and overrunning clutches) TC = WR2 x N + TF Cxt Where: TC =

Selection Considerations
The required size is determined mostly from the clutch torque needed.

Torque required from wrap spring clutch, lb.in. (Nm) Total inertia reflected to the clutch, lb.in.2 (kgm2) Shaft speed at clutch, RPM Constant, use 3696 for English units and 9.55 for metric units Acceleration time, seconds, use .003 for clutch Frictional torque to overcome motion (other than inertia), lb.in. (Nm)

SC and DCB clutches are rated by static torque. If your required torque exceeds the clutch rating, consult IDI engineering for assistance. Additional formulas and conversion charts are found on pages 58 and 59.

Minimum Load Inertia for DCB Models

When selecting wrap spring products, the system inertias should be calculated since the rapid time to speed (.003 to .0015 seconds) creates torque spikes. Torque (in.-lbs.)= WK2 x N Td 5.55 WK2 = System Inertia N = Speed Td = Drag Torque If the load inertia is small, the clutch and brake springs may not wrap to their proper position for accurate stops. If this calculation results in zero or less (negative), no action is required. When the calculation is

Maintenance
SC and DCB clutches are maintenance-free. The clutch should be kept free of grease and oil for proper operation. The clutch is specially lubricated at the factory and should not be lubricated once installed.

Models SC and DCB Clutch Applications

Design Example
Application (see diagram at right)
Printer wheel is indexed 180 to ink paper, then cut sheet to length. Determine the clutch size. Since we need accurate start and stop positioning, a DCB or SC single revolution clutch may be used. To determine the clutch size, first calculate the system load inertia: WR2 = .432 lb.in.2 x 4 inch wheel length x 2 rolls x .35 (aluminum conversion factor) = 1.2096 lb.in.2 (refer to charts on page 59) WR2 = .00055 x 3 inches length shaft = .00165 lb.in.2 Use the equation: TB = WR2 N T F 3696 x t TB = 1.21125 x 320 5 3696 x .0015 (Estimate TF is 5 lb.in. for this application) TB = 64.91 lb.in. This is the size DCB-4 clutch. Now add the inertia from rotating components of the clutch to the load inertia: 1.21125 lb.in. + .074 lb.in. = 1.285 lb.in.2 total system inertia Now recheck clutch size with revised inertia. TB = 1.285 x 320 5 3696 x .0015 TB = 69.18 lb.in. The DCB-4 clutch is the correct size to use in this application.

Positioning High-Speed Cutter for Brass Shim Stock

The shim stock feeds a preset distance and stops. A high speed cutoff knife rotates 180 to cut the shim stock to length. The DCB provides instantaneous engagement and fast, accurate cuts to the shim stock. No adjustments are required to the clutch.

Conveyor Anti-Backup
The SC mechanical clutch functions as an anti-backup device on an inclined conveyor. When the conveyor is running, the clutch is disengaged, and the output is freewheeling. If the conveyor is not running and begins to reverse down the incline, the clutch engages and brakes the conveyor.

Arc Suppression
When the Model ISC clutch is deenergized, a reverse voltage is generated in the coil. The reverse voltage can be very high and may cause damage to the coil and switch in the circuit. To protect the coil and switch the voltage should be suppressed, using an arc suppression circuit. Arc suppression does not affect the clutch or brake engagement time.

Motor Brakes Spring Applied Power-Off Operation

Inertia Dynamics AC-style, spring applied motor brakes are designed to decelerate or park inertial loads when the voltage is turned off, either intentionally or accidentally, as in the case of power failure. The friction disc with the hub is coupled to the motor shaft to be braked but is capable of moving axially. When power is off, a spring force clamps the friction disc between a pressure plate and a stationary plate, hence retarding motion. When an AC voltage is applied, the solenoid creates a magnetic force which pulls a lever arm through a linkage mechanism and releases the friction disk. This allows the hub and motor shaft to turn freely.

General Information
Features

External Manual Release Lever Totally Enclosed Construction Torque adjustable from full rated torque down to 50% Single phase AC coils provide fast engagement and release times and easy wiring

Add-On Brakes
A complete kit is available to convert a standard Reliance Electric TEFC motor to a brake motor. The frame size must be 56 or 140. The kit is not available for special enclosures such as washdown or explosion proof.

Motor Brake Coil Current

Mounting
Two styles are available: the single C-Face brake and the double C-Face brake. The single C-Face mounts on the fan end or non-driven end of a motor. The C-Face brake is interchangeable with existing brakes and can be used on motors that are modified to accept a brake. The double C-Face brake can be used as a coupler between standard C-Face motors and C-Face gear reducers. All motor brakes are interchangeable with competitive motor brakes.

Selection Procedure
1. To make an accurate brake selection, first determine the motor frame size, shaft size, hp, and RPM where the brake will be mounted. 2. Use chart on the right for static brake torque selection. Note that chart selections are based on a 1.4 service factor and increased to the next highest standard brake torque rating. To select a brake using a different service factor, use the formula below to determine the required brake static torque. Once your torque requirement has been determined, select a brake with at least that capacity. 3. Consult Part Number chart on page 60 for appropriate part number. Brake voltage should be matched with motor voltage rating.

Control Functions
On/Off Controls: Electric clutches and brakes are turned on and off by a controlled DC voltage. This DC voltage is typically obtained by rectifying AC voltage. The On/Off controls rectify 120 or 230 VAC and provide a 90 VDC output for a clutch and/or brake. Actual switching is provided by a customer-supplied switch, such as a relay, PLC, photo eye, or proximity sensor.

Adjustable Torque: Varying the current to a power-on clutch and/or brake provides variable torque output. Fine-tuning of the torque allows smooth and repeatable starts and stops. Overexcitation Control: To obtain high cycle rates and/or accurate positioning with electric clutches and brakes, overexcitation controls can be used. Inertia Dynamics offers OEX controls for individual, combination, or wrap spring clutches and brakes.

Mounting Options: Two different mounting options are available with Inertia Dynamics power supplies: 1. Octal socket mount for individual or combination clutches and brakes 2. Din rail mount for individual, combination, or wrap spring clutches and brakes.

Moment of Inertia Measuring Equipment

Moment of Inertia

Moment of Inertia Measuring Instrument MOI-100-004 and MOI-200-004

Moment of Inertia measurements can be taken in a matter of minutes on complex geometry and multi-material composition parts that would normally take hours of CAD design work or engineering calculations. The Inertia Dynamics Moment of Inertia Measuring Instrument is capable of measuring parts through any axis and parts with offset center of gravity. Also, our machine is not subject to errors caused by assumed densities and dimensional tolerancing. Since Moments of Inertia are critical in all rotating machinery, ballistics, projectiles, or aerospace hardware, these instruments are invaluable time-saving, cost-saving tools for design, quality assurance, and reliability engineers. These instruments are used widely as quality assurance tools to check the consistency of production parts where MOI is a critical design parameter. Inertia Dynamics offers a choice of five standard models for parts to 200 lbs. Moment of Inertia Measuring Instruments operate on the principle of an inverted torsional pendulum, providing a stable platform on which to mount test parts. The instrument platform is restricted to one degree of freedom. This eliminates random motions normally present in hanging torsional pendulum measuring methods.

Moment of Inertia
The test part is mounted on the instrument using a holding fixture, which is screwed to the instrument interface head (see instrument specifications for diagram). The oscillation lever is then indexed to the starting position and released. The period of oscillation and MOI is then determined and displayed by the microprocessor-based embedded controller in units of your choice. A simple press of a key allows instant conversion into any other engineering unit. At the same time, the measurement is being logged with time and date stamp for future recall. An RS-232 port is provided for interfacing the MOI instrument with your PC. With the optional computer software, available on CDROM, your measurements can be read directly into spreadsheets, documents, or databases for further analysis.

Calculate Moment of Inertia of the test part as follows: I = CT2 Ct2 or I = C(T2 t2) Where: I = Moment of Inertia of test part C = Calibration constant for instrument T = Period of oscillation of test part, holding fixture and instrument t = Period of oscillation of holding fixture and instrument The calibration constant (C) is determined by measuring the period of oscillation of a known Moment of Inertia or calibration weight as follows: C = I (calibration weight) T2 t2 Where: I = Calculated MOI of calibration weight T = Period of oscillation of calibration weight and instrument t = Period of oscillation of instrument only The instrument is linear, therefore the calibration constant need not be changed when measuring different size or weight parts.

Instruments will measure the Moment of Inertia of any test part about any axis. Fig. 1 depicts three basic axes. Fig. 2 shows the mounting method for the three basic axes. The test parts can be measured about the rotational center even though the center of gravity does not coincide with the rotational center.

Test parts with a small CG offset may be measured directly about their rotational center as in Fig. 3. Test parts with a large CG offset should be shifted and measured about their CG. The MOI about the rotational center can then be determined by adding the measured MOI value d2M (where d = distance between CG and rotational center and M = mass of test part weight; or weight/g if gravitational system of units is used) Fig. 4.

Glossary Wrap Spring Clutch & Brake Terms

Acceleration Time The amount of time to move a load from zero to full speed once the spring is wrapped down. Actuator Limit Stop The
actuator limit stop is a pin or plate that prevents the actuator from bottoming out on the solenoid and causing wear. The actuator is used on DCB models.

General Information
Start Stop (SS) Control function
that results in the output rotating one revolution and then coasting to a stop.

Control Tang A tang on either

end of the wrap spring which will engage and disengage the input and output hubs.

Deceleration Time The

amount of time required to bring a load to rest once the spring has unwrapped.

Static Torque The maximum

torque the clutch can generate statically when the wrap spring is completely wrapped down before slipping or damage occurs.

Anti-Backup (AB) This spring

prevents oscillation between the clutch and brake springs and prevents the output load from reversing. If stopping accuracy is required, this modification must be specified in the part number.

Overrunning (OR) A function of SC clutches. The clutch transmits torque in one direction and allows the load to overrun when the input is stopped or reversed. Overtravel Stop (OTS)
Disengages the output at a predetermined position every cycle, absorbing a portion of the load. Combined with AB, will provide 20% braking capacity.

Stop Collar The stop collar has detent positions to control the clutch or brakes engagement and disengagement. The standard stop collar has one detent, but special collars are available with up to twenty-four detents, or stops, per revolution. Wrap Spring The high tensile
strength coiled wire in clutches and brakes which allows transfer of a high amount of torque when wrapped tightly around two hubs.

Anti-Overrun (AOR) This

spring prevents an overhauling load from overrunning the input. The antioverrun applies when an eccentric load is encountered, maintaining the same output speed as the constant input speed. This spring must be specified in the part number.

Single Revolution (SR)

Control function that results in the output rotating one revolution and stopping in the same position. In SC units, the stopping accuracy is a function of output loads. DCB units maintain 1 stopping accuracy (noncumulative) independent of output load conditions.

Anti-Rotation Slot A slot in the

mounting plate of DCB products. The mounting plate should be retained by a loose-fitting tab or pin through the slot to prevent radial rotation of the clutch/brake.

General Information
Acceleration Time The amount of time required to change the speed of an inertial load, from the instant an electrical signal is applied to the time the system is at full speed. Air Gap The space between the
armature and field when the clutch or brake is disengaged. Brake-Power Off Unit used to stop a load when turned off electrically.

Glossary General Terms

Field Coil and housing assembly which forms part of the electromagnet. Flange Mounting plate located
on brake magnets and clutch fields.

Rotor The rotating component of a stationary field clutch that carries the friction material. Spline Drive Heavy duty clutch or brake drive comprised of mating armature and hub splines. Static Torque Torque measured
at instant of breakaway when both friction members are locked in at the same speed or at rest.

Frictional Torque The torque

required to overcome static friction in the system.

Friction Material Composition

material (nonasbestos) inserted between poles of clutch or brake magnet, used to retard wear rate of iron poles and armature.

Brake-Power On Unit used to

stop a load when turned on electrically.

Build Up Time The time

required to build up 90% of the flux which yields 80% of the rated torque.

Inertia The property of matter that causes an object to remain at rest or in motion until acted on by an outside force. Inertial Torque The torque generated by accelerating or decelerating a load. Moment of Inertia WR = Weight of an object times its radius of gyration squared.
2

Thermal Capacity Brake rating that takes into consideration number of stops/minute, total inertia, and brake rotational speed. Time to Speed The amount of
time required to change the speed of an inertial load, from the instant an electrical signal is applied to the time the system is at full speed.

Burnishing A wearing in
process of the mating friction surfaces for maximum torque.

Clutch Unit used to couple two

parallel shafts via pulleys, gears, or sprockets.

Clutch Coupling Unit used to

couple two in-line shafts.

Time to Zero Speed The amount of time required to stop an inertial load, from the instant an electrical signal is removed to the time the system is at rest. Torque The action of a force producing rotation. Torque is comprised of a force (lb.) acting upon a lever arm of length (in.). The product of the force and lever arm is poundinches (lb.in.) used to express torque. See static and dynamic torque.

Decay Time The time required

to decay to 10% of the flux which yields 10% of the rated torque.

Overexcitation Applying a high voltage for a brief time period to shorten the engagement time. Sometimes referred to as spiking. Positive Engagement An
engagement with no slip.

Deceleration Time The

amount of time required to stop an inertial load, from the instant an electrical signal is applied to the time the system is at rest.

Radial Bearing Load The maximum load that can be applied to a clutch at maximum speed without causing premature wear. Residual Magnetism A condition in magnets where low levels of magnetism remain after electric current is removed.

UL Underwriters Laboratories An
organization which tests electrical equipment for product safety.

Dynamic Torque Torque measured at instant of clutch or brake engagement when one friction member is rotating and the other is stationary or rotating at a different speed. Approximately 80% of static torque.

Zero Backlash Armature

A spring mounted armature used to eliminate backlash and dragging of the armature against the field magnet.
