KEYNOTE SPEAKERS William Rankin
Dr. William Rankin is an associate professor of English and Director of Educational Innovation at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. Along with colleagues, he helped design the initiative that became ACU Connected, ACUs pioneering oneto-one that gave every student an iPhone or iPod Touch as a platform for exploring next-wave mobile learning. As part of this initiative, Rankin has worked on everything from defining pedagogical approaches to designing interface elements, and he continues to work to discover and create new ways to engage learners through emerging technologies. As project lead, Rankin was named Campus Technologys Innovator of the Year for mobile learning in 2008. In 2009, he was named an Apple Distinguished Educator and in 2010, he was named to Apples ADE Board of Directors. Interviews with Rankin have appeared in such periodicals as Wired, The Guardian, and The Chronicle for Higher Education. Rankin has also contributed to stories featured on US National Public Radio, the BBC, the CBC and NBC Nightly News.
Next-Wave Mobility and the Three Ages of Information Although its easy to imagine that education has never faced the sorts of challenges it faces today, history proves that this is simply not the case. Over the years, education has redefined itself repeatedly, ironically often by incorporating the very things that seemed to be threatening it in the first place. What does a brief survey of the relationship between information technology and educational practice suggest about where all of this is headed? Does the all-the-time/everywhere learning offered by new technologies present an opportunity for solving todays educational problems, or is it a pedagogical dead-end? How do new technologies and practices challenge us radically to reconfigure education, requiring new conceptions and strategies? This presentation will offer the historical perspective and assessment necessary for contextualizing and addressing these important questions.
The Vault of Ages: History, Collaboration, & the Future of Books When Gutenbergs press first made printed information widely available, the world saw an explosion of creativity. Now, a new generation of technologies is emerging that will change the world just as radically. The first true digital booksbooks that are location-aware, mediarich, broadly-interlinked, and socially-connectedare beginning to appear, offering a new kind of access that will be just as culturally transformative as the books coming off the first printing press more than 500 years ago. This presentation will briefly explore the historical trajectory of printed books as a context for visualizing how digital books will transform not only the publishing industry and education, but the world.
Leveraging Mobility to Enhance Engagement in Education The educational promise offered by mobile technologies can sometimes be overshadowed by the disruptive changes they present in education changes that ask us to reevaluate the roles of teachers and students, the policies that govern access and technology, and the practices of teaching and learning. In this interactive workshop aimed at faculty and administrators, well explore some common teaching challenges and work together to discover practical ways that mobility can address them. Well explore topics such as challenge-based learning, leveraging studentowned devices, and instituting hybrid and asynchronous models of education to engage students more effectively and to produce learners who are more ready to face the challenges of the future.
The New Classroom: How Information Technology is Transforming Educational Space One doesnt need to be an architect to know that the space people use can have a profound impact on what they do and how they perform. Our classrooms project a particular set of expectations and behaviors that impact the sort of teaching and learning that takes place within them. The relationship between people and information has shaped these spaces, and they reflect that relationship in some very specific ways. Yet as our relationship with information begins to change our classrooms need to change, too, encouraging new expectations, building on new perceptions, and stimulating new kinds of activities. In this interactive presentation, youll discover some of the reasons weve shaped our classrooms as we have, some principles for reimagining and restructuring them, and some ways to envision the future of teaching and learning.

Lead 3.0: Tools are Cool, but Leadership is Essential! Empower the Learning! Are you the Chief Learning Officer (CLO) in your school? Does your staff see you as a teacher and a mentor? There are plenty of digital tools, projects and tutorials but we need to create an environment that makes embracing new things not only possible but easy. In this presentation, you will clarify your personal vision for technology integration, define your role in leading by example, establish a baseline of tools and resources for you and your staff and discuss the implementation of pedagogy which supports the integration of technology across the curriculum. The content is designed for school leaders and those in curriculum leadership roles and is built on the idea of leading by example. Great student work requires great teaching: Powerful Digital/Multimedia Essays - an Important Literacy Helping students construct powerful visual or multimedia essays is an important literacy and requires more than the right tools. This session will review the tools but will focus also on the process, the writing, editing, and visual literacy that support critical thinking and clear communication. Participants will explore the process that leads students into critical thinking, creativity and innovation as well as the components of powerful images and visual literacy. Tools are Cool, but its the Teaching that Counts! Its the pedagogy not the tools that will release the inherent creativity and passion within your students. Create an environment that makes embracing new things not only possible but easy (for you and for your students). We will discuss how to focus on basic things from vision to that lesson plans can help you develop the pedagogy needed for the integration of all those cool tools. How having a road map undercuts fear. Learn how to tap into digital resources and create projects that are integrated into your curriculum and encourage creativity and a higher level thinking. Participants will also receive access to a Symbaloo page with basic tools, teaching resources and Personal Learning Network (PLN) materials to be shared.
Top Ten Technology Tools for Young Learners There are some game-changing tools now available online to support learning for early years students. Well explore my top ten online picks that can enhance your current practice, or completely change the way you teach in your primary classroom. Did I mention that theyll all be free? Just Point and Shoot: Using Video to Capture Learning Think video is just for outside of school activities? Join us to talk about how students of any age can plan, capture and share their learning experience using video. The session will include curriculum connections, the benefits of using this media and the ways that video can be used to connect, collaborate and share at any grade level. Primary Digital Portfolios Yes! Primary students, too, can have digital portfolios that allow them to reflect and record their learning. Just like their older counterparts, young learners want to showcase their learning for a wide audience and obtain feedback beyond the teachers comments. Well discuss what works effectively with our youngest students.

What are the budgetary implications? In this session, participants will examine the advantages and challenges of the three models and participate in a facilitated discussion the impact of one-to-? on K-12 education. eBooks, eTexts, & ePub: How to Make Decisions about eReading & Devices in an Unstandardized World Digital content is here for real. What is the impact on librarians, their programs, and student learning? In this session, participants will explore strategies for improving student literacy with digital content, and examine the concerns new formats present. In this session, participants will develop strategies to bridge the gap between learner needs and the industry's failure to standardize content delivery. Unblock This! Impact of Free-Range media on 21st Century Learning Many educators are concerned about the impact of filtering on teaching and learning in schools. Costly litigation, online predators, network security, privacy breeches are commonly cited as justification for aggressive filtering practices. While these concerns are legitimate, they deny students the chance to learn and publish online in a supervised, instructional setting. In this session, participants will investigate the power of teaching and learning with participatory media, its impact on 21st Century skill building among learners, and how it facilitates assessment. The presenter will feature five lessons which empower 21st century learners.
Students as Producers Reverse the role of students from being primarily consumers of content to becoming the producers of information. Tools demonstrated will include free and built-in software for computers as well as apps on iOS devices. Ideas for incorporating into K-12 settings will demonstrate deeper understanding of content, more active participation by students, and interaction with a global audience. Getting Geeky Come see some new tips and tricks with the suite of free Google Apps available for education. If you thought you knew everything Google had to offer, you havent attended this session!
