Preparation of Joint for Welding Extension
1. Cut the pieces to the proper shape 2. Grind the ends as shown in Figure 1 so a full penetration weld can be made as shown in Figure 2 3. Although sanding the joint is desirable from an appearance standpoint, care should be taken not to hollow grind the weld. Small depressions can greatly reduce the strength of the frame. Normally, any cracks that form will follow the grind marks; therefore, it is advisable to hold the sander so the grind marks are parallel to the length of the frame. CAUTION:No welding applications, other than shown and the tractor taper welding are to be considered without Sterling Truck approval.
