Purpose of the course unit: programme competences to be developed Course content: This course examines historical, structural and global processes and critically assesses meanings of democracy, freedoms and civil society, multiethnicity and multiculturalism and problems of their practical application. Critique of the old and common heroic myth that only unitary ethnolinguistic state can save the nation will help students to understand and examine how myths can produce constant obstacle to the establishment and maintenance of pluralistic democratic world. Discussions on the right to national identity and the right of minorities to participate in the decision-making institutions will enable to research and identify the complex problems of managing public affairs in conformity with the constitution and the laws. The course will suggest rethinking the traditional understanding of nation state and civil society and introduce globalization as challenge and historical novelty in contemporary world. The purpose/aims of the course are: 1. To provide theoretical knowledge and skills for students to understand, investigate and critically evaluate complexities of and interconnections

among ethnic identity (name of group, symbols, cultural artifacts and cultural heritage), phenomenon of multiculturalism in plural national, linguistic and religious societies, and aspects of globalization. 2. To provide knowledge on the main concepts, namely, ethnic identity, national grouping, multicultural civic society and globalization. 3. To teach methods analyzing contemporary global development and train necessary skills to understand, investigate and critically evaluate complexities of and interconnections among ethnic identity (name of group, symbols, cultural artifacts and cultural heritage), phenomenon of multiculturalism in plural national, linguistic and religious societies, and aspects of globalization. Learning outcomes of the programme Students will be able to receive knowledge within a common education framework of humanitarian and social sciences Students will be able to analyze and try to solve problems in contemporary policy of building up a multicultural society at the time of globalization and multiple identities Students will be able to disseminate their received knowledge and trained skills Learning outcomes of the course unit To be able to understand notion and characteristics of ethnicity, concepts of multicultural society and the phenomenon of the process of globalization To be able to present and discuss scientific research results upon studies on ethnicity, multiculturalism and globalization. 1. Ethnicity, nation and nationalism Theoretical concepts of ethnicity, nation, state and nationalism with critical overview. Models of state formation and nationbuilding with historical overview. 2. Language and group identity Linguistic basis, concepts and models of group identity and national state formation. Two types of ethnolinguistic dispersions in the mixed ethnolinguistic communities. Linguistic differences in vernacular and literal language as group unifying and segregation roles. 3. Concept of multicultural society Theories about multiculturalism and multicultural concept of society with critical overview. Multicultural vs. unicultural concepts of society. 4. Private and public domains in plural multicultural societies Characteristics and differences between unitary and plural societies. Concepts of plural society and multicultural coexistence. Functions of private and public domains in plural multicultural society. Different policies and results of minority integration. 5. Individual/group identity and citizenship in multicultural societies Historical overview of the concepts of citizenship from the Greek antique polis city-states up today. Notion of homo politicus, citizenship and multicultural society in modern world. The ethnolinguistic, ethno-cultural and ethnoconfessional minoritys right protection. 6. Understanding globalization Theories about globalization and their critical approaches. Practical and popular understanding of the process of globalization and its results. The roots of antiglobalization movement, its programme and results.

Assessment: 5: Excellent knowledge and skills. 45-50% of correct answers. 4: Good knowledge and skills; may be minor errors. 35-44% of correct answers. 3: Average knowledge and skills; there are errors. 25-34% of correct answers. 2: Knowledge and skills are below average; there are (basic) errors. 15-24% of correct answers. 1: Knowledge and skills to satisfy the minimum requirements; lots of errors. 5-14% of correct answers. 0: Does not meet minimum requirements. 0-4% of correct answers. Assessment: The structure of presentation (evaluation criteria: clear and consistent layout (introduction, body and conclusion)) up to 1 point; Conceptualism of presentation (evaluation criteria: complete and reasonable disclosure of the chosen topic) up to 2 points; Failure to deliver presentation - 0 points. 20% - to actively and constructively participate in discussions, to answer questions, to formulate problems and issues, to provide critical comments; 10% - to participate in the debate, to answer to frequently asked questions; 0% - almost does not participate in the discussion or spent more than 1/3 of the seminars.
