Start with the Brim: Using 6mm hook Ch. 9 R1: sc in second ch from hook and each ch across, turn (8 sc) R2: ch1, sc in the bl of each sc, turn (8 sc) Repeat row 2 ,48 more times for a total of 50 rows. Fold brim, matching up foundation ch with the last row. Sl st ends together to form a connected brim. Start the hat body: Switch to 6.5 mm hook Hold hat brim horizontally. You will now be crocheting into the ends of the sc rows of the brim. Ch1, and work 69 sc evenly into the ends of the sc brim rows. To do this I followed this pattern. Work 1 sc in the first 2 row ends, 2 sc in the next row end. Continue this pattern (1,1,2) until the last 2 row ends. In the last 2 row ends work 1 sc in the next row end, 2 sc in the last row end. Join with a sl st in the first sc. Now you will work in a continuous sprial round. R1: ch1, work 1sc and 2dc in the same st you put the joining sl st in (mark this first sc), sk 2 sts, * (sc, 2dc) in the next st, sk 2 sts *, repeat * to * until the end of the round. DO NOT turn or join with a sl st. Rounds are joinded with the first st of each new round.

R2: * (sc, 2dc) in the next st, sk 2 sts *, repeat * to * until the end of the round. Keep moving the st marker up with each round. You should always be working in the sc and skipping the dcs. Repeat round 2, 16 more times for a total of 18 rounds. Adjust number of rounds for more or less slouch. End your last round by joining in the first sc with a slip st. Cut a long tail to sew up the top of the hat. Closing the hat: Turn hat inside out. Thread tail onto tapestry needle. The top of your hat will look like the first diagram. Basically an open tube. Sew across the hat as shown and cinch it tight.

Now your hat will look like the second picture above. Sew across the lobes as shown by the green arrow & cinch it tight. Sew across as shown by the red arrow, cinch it tight. Now your hat will look like the diagram to the left. Continue to sew across the lobes one at a time cinching each st tight. Now you will have 8 lobes. Continue in this manner until the hat is closed tight at the top. Fasten off & weave in ends.
