SuperPico BSS Controller EX3

for Rural, Marine and Rapid Deployment

STMs SuperPico BSS Controller EX3 provides the baseband processing for up to three SuperPico Cellular Radios, forming an entire Base Station Subsystem (BSS). These small, rugged outdoor units can be quickly pole or wall mounted. Installation is plug-and-play; all configuration is performed remotely. Its Base Transceiver System (BTS) and Base Station Controller (BSC) functions manage cells and enable call hand-offs for mobility using the leading GSM software-defined radio technology. Local switching of calls within or between cells, multi-band configurations and remote software upgrades for more TRXs and new features are supported. Total power consumption is among the lowest in the industry for an outdoor BTS or entire BSS. To enable ready and efficient backhauling of traffic from remote locations, the SuperPico BSS Controller supports IP-based interfaces and an optional Integrated Backhaul Element (IBE), such as STMs SatLink VSAT modem/controller. Optimizations assure maximum backhaul efficiency and performance over satellite-based IP networks. The SuperPico BSS Controller EX3 is a member of a family of cellular radio products and systems from STM for Internet Protocol (IP) based cellular radio communication systems. STM is the technology and market leader in DVB-RCS satellite networks delivering superior performance for telecom service providers, ISPs, governments and enterprises around the world. STM also offers teleport services, installation and integration services, plus total managed network services for cellular backhaul and shared cellular network operation services.

Features & Benefits

All GSM Services: 2G to 2.75G
Combined with one or more STM SuperPico Cellular Radios, the SuperPico BSS Controller EX3 delivers of all common GSM user services: FR and EFR voice telephony, SMS, GPRS and EDGE. Optional AMR vocoders yield double voice capacity and increased backhaul efficiency, while retaining excellent voice quality.

Backhaul: Satellite or Terrestrial

For many new BSS installations satellite backhaul is the only option to reach new markets, or serve rural, marine, military or emergency sites. In many of these environments all-outdoor installations are required for all electronics. To keep total costs low STM offers integrated backhaul options, such as a VSAT modem/ controller. Special optimizations in the BSS deliver superior bandwidth efficiency and high quality using satellite to keep backhaul OPEX low.

Leading Software Radio Technology

The SuperPico BSS Controller EX3 uses industry leading software radio technology for Radio Access Networks (RANs). It provides many advantages over traditional architectures: remote just-in-time upgrades in TRX capacity and frequency plans; mixing of different bands in the same local BSC; flexible IP-based scalability and networking; and leveraging Moores Law for ever growing total system capacity requirements.

Ruggedized High Reliability

The rugged, aluminum housing acts as a heat sink; it contains no fans or moving parts and is IP66 sealed to withstand dust and water jets. The unit supports outdoor temperatures and has a 15 year MTBF rating.

Choice of BSS Capacity Options

The unit comes in different capacity options to handle various GSM site requirements with efficiency superior to one-size-fits-all. This yields much lower power consumption, smaller system sizes, lower weight, and most importantly, lower costs.

Power Efficient, All-Solar BTS/BSS Sites

The power efficiency of STMs SuperPico Cellular Radios combined with this controller result in the cellular industrys lowest BSS wattage for outdoor cells. This enables all-solar BSS sites, and thereby flexibility in site placement, rapid deployment, plus greater savings in OPEX, CAPEX and installation cost.
