Bred from the Large White, the American Yorkshire is one of the most desired breeds of sow among breeders in America. The Yorkshire is distinguishable by its white erect ears and large body. Yorkshires make excellent mothers. Their litters are large and healthy. Their fair skin makes them prone to sunburn.

Berkshire

The Berkshire is a black pig with white tips on the nose, legs and tail. The snout is short and dish-shaped and the ears stand erect. With quiet natures, the Berkshire hogs will live peacefully in an enclosure. They have excellent siring abilities.

Duroc

Durocs originated in the eastern United States and in the cane belt. They are fast growers who do not need as much food as other breeds to reach the same weight. This makes them an economical investment. Durocs have reddish skin and droopy ears.

Hampshire
Hampshire hogs are another dark-skinned breed but they are distinguishable by a white band which runs over one shoulder and down the opposite front leg. Their ears stand erect and they are popular for their lean meat.

Landrace
American Landrace are descendants of the famous Danish Landrace breed, developed from crossing a native Danish swine with an English Large White. Similar to the other white breeds of hog, the Landrace is highly regarded for its mothering capabilities. With large floppy ears and a long body, they look rather different from the other breeds. Landrace have the highest survival rate of all the popular breeds, both before and after weaning.

Native
The Philippine Native pig is either black or black with a white belly. Varieties include Ilocos and Jalajala. The Berkjala, Diani, Kaman, Koronadel and Libtong breeds were all developed from this breed. It is now thought to be extinct. The breed is very prolific, in average the gilts could exhibit signs of sexual maturity as young as 4 to 5 months. They are have a low feed conversion ratio. Growing swine reach 60 kilos during the 6 to 8 months fattening period. This breed is popular throughout the Philippines in the for Letchon (broiled whole pig).

Pietrain
Pitrain is a breed of domestic pig native to Wallonia, which takes its name from Pitrain, a small village of the Walloon municipality of Jodoigne. This breed became popular in the 1950s during the difficult period of the swine market in 1950-51. Pitrain swine were imported into Germany in 1960-61. The main breeding areas in that country are Schleswig-Holstein,

Nordrhein-Westfalen, and Baden-Wrttemberg. They are commonly used in crossbreeding in Germany to improve the quality of pork produced
