EVALUATION

Great the patient and his family. Inquire how he feels in staying at the clinic for 7 days. Ask him to sit comfortably. Start the discussion.

At the end of the discussion, the patient will:

At the end of the discussion, ask the patient to:

Define dengue in his own words

Dengue is an infection caused by a virus. The virus is contracted from the bite of a striped Aedes aegypti mosquito that has previously bitten an infected person. It occurs commonly as dengue fever

Lecture- discussion

Define dengue in his own words

Name the virus that causes Dengue

There are four serotypes of viruses that cause dengue. DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, DEN-4

Lecture-discussion

Name the virus that causes Dengue

Differentiate dengue fever from dengue hemorrhagic fever and their signs and symptoms

Dengue fever is an acute febrile illness of 2-7 days duration with 2 or more of the following: 1. Headache 2. Retro-orbital

Lecture- discussion (provide handouts)

Differentiate DF from DHF

3. 4. 5. 6.

pain Muscle pain Joint pain Rash Hemorrhagic

Dengue hemorraghic fever is classified into four grades of severity: Grade I Fever accompanied by non-specific constitutional symptoms; the only hemorrhagic manifestation is a positive tourniquet test and / or easy bruising. Grade II Spontaneous bleeding in addition to the manifestations of Grade I patients, usually in the forms of skin, nose, gums, vomitus or stools. Grade III Circulatory failure manifested by a rapid, weak pulse and narrowing of pulse pressure or hypotension with the presence of cold clammy skin and restlessness. Grade IV

Profound shock with undetectable blood pressure or pulse. Grade II and IV are considered to be dengue shock syndrome

Explain the mode of transmission and Pathophysiology of Dengue

The virus is not contagious and cannot be spread directly from person to person. There must be a person-tomosquito-to another person pathway. Aedes aegypti Dengue virus (2-7 days incubation period) Destruction of platelets Increase potential for hemorrhage Stimulates intense inflammatory response Petechial rash, high fever, headache, epistaxis, vomiting, abdominal pain Shock (2-6 days after the start of symptoms) Death

Lecture-discussion (provide handouts)

Explain in own simple words the mode of transmission and pathogenesis of dengue

Interpret the meaning and significance of decreasing platelet count

Platelet is the smallest cells in the blood. They are formed in the red bone marrow, and some stored in the spleen. Platelets are disk shape, contain no hemoglobin. Platelets contain clotting factors that cause them to stick together, which stops bleeding from an opened blood vessel by solidifying the blood (hemostasis). When the number of blood platelets is too low, blood takes longer to clot, which presents an obvious danger for hemorrhage

Lecture- discussion (provide handouts and sample of platelet count laboratory results)

Correlate the significance of decreasing platelet count

Apply natural ways to increase platelets

Steps to increase platelets naturally 1. Avoid all refined food stuffs including sugars, saturated fats, processed foods and grains, aerated drinks. 2. Consume a lot of healthy food. This includes fresh and organic foods. This will help in stimulating the body s internal mechanism and increase platelet count. 3. Ensure that raw foods are washed thoroughly

Lecture-discussion (provide handouts)

Apply natural ways to increase platelets

before consuming it as helminthes, parasites and viruses are known case of platelets fall. 4. Take vitamin C 5. Some claim the Euporbia hirta or tawa-tawa. It does have natural roperties that promote blood platelet development, stabilize the membranes of blood vessels and prevent internal bleeding. Boil the leaves and let cool. Drink 1 cup every hour for 24 hours.

Enumerate the preventive measures for Dengue

How can dengue fever be prevented? 1. Control and eradication of mosquitoes carrying the virus that causes dengue 2. Empty stagnant water from old tires, trash cans, flower pots 3. Limiting exposure to mosquitoes by avoiding standing water and staying indoors 2 hours after sunrise and

Lecture-Discussion (provide handouts)

Enumerate at least 2 important preventive measures

before sunset. 4. Wear long pants and long sleeves in area with lots of mosquitoes. 5. Use mosquito repellant lotion

Express concern and need to avoid mosquito bites and recurrence of DHF by the following suggested good health habits

Medication Intake of appropriate vitamin supplement and diuretics to increase protection mechanism of the immune system and decreases renal vascular resistance and may increase renal blood flow, respectively. Economic The use of non pharmacotherapy such as drinking plenty of water will promote increase plasma in blood to increase immunity and proper hygiene and promotion of cleanliness at home and work area. Treatment Management of such condition would be through hydration and doing control measures to eliminate vector by promoting cleanliness in the environment through proper disposal of rubber tires, changing of water of lower vases once a week, destruction of breeding places of mosquito and residual spraying with

Provide handouts

The patient will verbalized thankfulness and assurance of following the tips indicated in the handouts

insecticides. Hygiene Advise to follow proper body hygiene and to maintain cleanliness on surroundings. This would prevent additional cases of DHF. Out Patient/ Follow-up Any odd signs such as fever, petechiae, recurrence of fever, etc. must be immediately reported to the physician. Diet Instruct to eat foods that are low fat, low fiber, non-irritating and noncarbonated.

Render prayer for the patient
