1.The Giver by Lois Lowry. 
Given his lifetime assignment at the Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas becomes the receiver 
of memories shared by only one other in his community and discovers the terrible truth 
about the society in which he lives

2. Lost Horizon by James Hilton.
While escaping war­torn China, a group of Europeans crash in the Himalayas, where 
they are rescued and taken to the mysterious Valley of the Blue Moon, Shangri­La. 
Hidden from the rest of the world, Shangri­La is a haven of peace and tranquility for 
world­weary diplomat Hugh/Richard Conway. His ambitious brother, George, sees it as 
a prison from which he must escape, even if it means risking his life and bringing 
destruction to the ancient culture of Shangri­La.

3. Island by Aldous Huxley
An island called Pala which is ruled by love, compassion and reason and is stumbled 
across by a ship­wrecked journalist. The journalist is also the representative of an oil 
baron. The book is about his discovery of the Island and the feelings of pain and lose 
which have tormented his life. The two come together as the islanders teach him how to 
deal with his pain. However while all of this is afoot plans are underway for oil firms to 
take over Pala.

4. Red Star by: Alexander Bogdanov
A science fiction novel about a communist utopia on Mars. Set in early revolutionary 
Russia and socialist Mars, the novel tells the story of Leonid, a scientist­revolutionary 
who travels to Mars to learn and experience their socialist system and to teach them of 
his own world.

5. 2150 AD by: Thea Alexander
The story concerns the character of Jon, who travels between his world of 1976 and the 
future world of 2150, where the Macro Society dominates the Earth. The world of 1976 is 
referred to by the inhabitants of 2150 as the pinnacle of micro society.

5. Who is Ayn Rand? Write a mini biography of 2 ­3 
paragraphs about her life.
Ayn Rand was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, on February 2, 1905. When she 
was 6 she taught herself how to read. At 9 she decided she was going to become a 
fiction writer. She went to the University of Petrograd to study philosophy and history. 
She then went to the State Institute for Cinema Arts in 1924 to study screenwriting. In 
late 1925 she obtained permission to leave Soviet Russia for a visit to relatives in the 
United States. She told authorities her visit would be short but she ended up staying in 
the United States. She went to live in Hollywood where she met Frank O’Connor who 
she married in 1929. They were married for 50 years until Frank died. She did a number 
of nonwriting jobs for the next several years. Then in 1932 she sold her first screenplay 
“Red Pawn” and she saw her first stage play produced “Night of January 16th”. 
She finished her first novel in 1934 but wasn’t published till 1936. It was called 
“We the Living”. Then in 1935 she started writing “The Fountainhead”. She took a break 
from it to work on “Anthem” in 1937. “The Fountainhead” was finally published in 1943. In 
late 1943 she returned to Hollywood to write a screenplay for “The Fountainhead” it 
wasn’t produced to 1948 though. She began her major novel in 1946 titled “Atlas 
Shrugged”. Than in 1951 she moved back to New York to finish her novel. It was finally 
published in 1957 and was her greatest novel. After that she wrote and lectured on 
Objectivism which was her philosophy. Ayn Rand died on March 6, 1982 in her New 
York City apartment

6. What books did she write, tell a little about them.

1. We the Living. We the Living was Ayn Rand's first novel. It was about a young woman
in the hostile conditions of 1920s Soviet Russia who struggles to preserve her values
including the man she loves. In pursuit of this goal, she undertakes an affair with an
idealistic Communist soldier, and the consequences change all of their lives.

2.Anthem. Anthem was written as the diary of Equality 7­2521, a young man living in a 

future in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism, to the point of not even 
knowing words like "I" or "mine." Everyone lives and works in collective groups, with all 
aspects of daily life dictated by "councils" ­­ the Council of Vocations, the Council of 
Scholars, etc. His curiosity leads him to forbidden discoveries and eventually to exile, 
where he makes the greatest discovery of all.

3. The Fountainhead. The Fountainhead follows the life of Howard Roark, an architect, 
and several people he interacts with, including his lover, a fellow architect, an 
architectural critic and a newspaper publisher.

4. Atlas Shrugged. Atlas Shrugged is a mystery story, but with strong elements of 
romance and science fiction, as well as Rand's trademark philosophical ideas. There 
are actually two mysteries: one about why so many of the world's most productive minds 
are disappearing, the other about who invented a revolutionary new kind of motor. As 
you might guess, the solutions to the two mysteries are closely related. Readers follow 
the struggles of Dagny Taggart, a railroad executive, and Hank Rearden, a steel 
magnate, as they attempt to answer both of these questions and stave off the collapse 
of an increasingly irrational and collectivist society.

7. What is Ayn Rand’s philosophy in your words?

You can’t fight nature. Without reason there is no
understanding. Man’s highest moral is himself. Man can’t
force something from someone with physical power.
8. Define these words so that you understand them.

– Capitalism- An economic system based on a free market, open 
competition, profit motive and private ownership of the means of production.
– Communism- a system of social organization in which all economic and 
social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self­
perpetuating political party.

– Libertarianism­ advocating liberty 
– Objectivism­ a tendency to lay stress on the objective 
– Collectivism­ a political theory that the people should own the means of 
production
