COURTHOUSE GALLERY- Ginger Ertz had an irrepressible creative urge since she was old enough to hold a crayon, and in the 1980s, with a BA and MLS under her belt, she started taking drawing, painting, and sculpture classes one or two nights a week, first at the University of the Arts, and then at The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, for four years at each school. She moved to Vermont and studied with private art teachers, eventually becoming a painting teacher herself. At this point she was exhibiting work and winning awards, such as the Vermont Studio Center Fellowship Award at the Stratton (VT) Arts Festival, in 1997. She returned to school full-time and obtained an MFA from Johnson (VT) State College and the Vermont Studio Center in 2001. She continues to show work regionally and beyond. Her site-specific Soft Chandelier was selected and installed at the Albany International Airport from 2007-2010. She was recently included in the Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region, a juried exhibition at the Hyde Museum, Glens Falls, NY, in fall of 2010, and at MASS Mocas KidSpace exhibition Under The Sea, October 1, 2011 May 30, 2012. Her awards include residencies at the American Academy in Rome, and several residencies at the Vermont Studio Center. In 2009 she received a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. This exhibition is funded in part by Price Choppers Golub Foundation, The Town of Lake George, and the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency. The Courthouse Gallery hours during exhibitions are Tuesday through Friday 12 - 5 pm, Saturday 12 - 4 pm, and all other times by appointment. The Courthouse Gallery is located at the side entrance of the Old County Courthouse, corner of Canada and Lower Amherst Streets, Lake George, NY. The time trading system values everyones contributions equally. At the introductory meeting coordinators explain how time trading works, and attendees have the opportunity to meet others in the group. THE FIRST HYPOTHERMIC HOEDOWN 2012 Scheduled for February 4th, 2012, this fitness-based community event will center on a rugged obstacle race through woods, fields, streams, and frozen swamps. The goal of the event is to inspire kids and adults to get outside and show Winter whos boss. The race will be held regardless of sun, rain, snow, sleet or ice! Related events are still to be determined, and will depend on the availability of snow. These events may include snow critter building, snowshoeing and cross country skiing, ice-skating, NERF battles, live music, and other fun competitive events to get your body moving. There will also be a nature trek with Howard Romack, a renowned community nature enthusiast and former science teacher. The early morning and early afternoon will include a winter hot air balloon launch. With lots of hot comfort foods & drinks, this is an event for the whole family. The 2012 Hypothermic Hoedown Race will begin and end at the new Bandstand on Avenue B located off Route 22 in the Village of Cambridge. Attendees can park at Cambridge Central School. All other events and festivities will also take place at the Bandstand and school fields. The race will have 3 distance categories: a short kids race; a 1.5 mile race; and a 5K. It will be very challenging with mud, water, numerous natural and man made obstacles, and very likely ice and snow! Both teams and individuals are invited to participate. Teamwork and cooperation will make the event! Along with teamwork, we also hope to see some friendly rivalries. Teachers vs. Teachers, student groups vs. student groups, Girl Scouts vs. Boy ScoutsWe may at last find out who has more guts; teachers or students. (We all know the answer already, but now is our chance to prove it). All finishers will receive an ice cream cone to commemorate their victory against the icy course. (Hot chocolate will be available for those with less fortitude.) Proceeds from this event will help to set up a fund to support enrichment opportunities for the youth of Cambridge and will help to fund this Springs science expedition to Costa Rica. To be on the list, a student must have achieved a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 credit hours. CCC RECEIVES LARAC GRANT The Salem Courthouse Community Center has once again received LARAC funding in support of two worthwhile initiatives. On Friday, January 27, an exhibit entitled The Old Washington County Courthouse will open in the Great Hall. The exhibit which is being created with the assistance of Salem Town Historian, William A. Cormier, will be an interactive display featuring old photographs, diagrams, a CD produced by Tom McMorris and artifacts from the archives. Designed by noted architect, Marcus Cummings, and constructed in 1869, the courthouse is an historically significant building which serves as the anchor of the Salem Historic District. The courthouse is managed by the Historic Salem Courthouse Preservation Association which is striving to restore the building. Additional funding from the Shoppe Off Broadway thrift store and the Dr. Asa Fitch Historical Society has helped to make the exhibit a reality. The Old Washington County Courthouse will be available for viewing until April 2 and will open with a reception on January 27 from 5 until 7 pm. The public is invited. THE LAND OF THE FREE IS NOT SO FREE Americas economic freedom score declined again in the 2012 rankings. According to the 2012 Index of Economic Freedom, released yesterday by The Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal, the United States is, sadly, only a mostly free country. While the U.S. did make the top-ten list of economically freest nations in the world, we dropped a full spot in the rankings to just tenth freest. Our neighbors to the north in Canada placed sixth in the rankings. According to the editors of The Index, launched in 1995, the Index evaluates countries in four broad areas of economic freedom: rule of law; regulatory efficiency; limited government; and open markets. Based on its aggregate score, each of 179 countries was classified as free (i.e. combined scores of 80 or higher); mostly free (70-79.9); moderately free (60-69.9); mostly unfree (50-59.9); or repressed (under 50). This year the United States scored a 76.3, a drop of 1.5 points on the 100-point scale. Whats more unsettling is this is the fourth straight year the U.S. has fallen in the rankings. As recently as 2008, the U.S. received as score of 81, garnering the seventh spot and classification as a free nation. According to The Indexs editors, about half of the U.S.s decline in the rankings is due to increases in government spending. Currently, government spending at all levels consumes 42 percent of GDP, while total public debt is now larger than the entire U.S. economy. Another third of the drop results from increases in the regulatory burden placed on citizens and businesses. In fact, the 70 major rules imposed on Americans since 2009 cost the country nearly $40 billion last year alone in reduced economic output. The question, therefore, is: When are we going to wake up and kick out the scoundrels running our government, and, thereafter, institute term limits by Constitutional amendment? I wonder.

Unfortunately, Vermont does not require its subcontractors or employees to verify that its workers are in this country legally, leaving them free to hire as many illegal aliens as they wish with your tax money! With 19,100 Vermont residents unemployed, Gov. Shumlin cannot allow this to continue. Its bad enough that illegal aliens cost Vermont $38,000,000 each year. Allowing illegal aliens to have continued access to Vermonts job opportunities only encourages them to remain in Vermont illegally. Unemployed Vermont residents should not have to compete against illegal aliens for jobs. Please go to governor.vermont.gov/contact us to send a message urging Gov. HOOZAPALOOZA- Hoosipalooza is a community celebration to support the Hoosick Falls Food Pantry on Feb. 4th starting at 8:00am. This daylong, spirited celebration will provide our community with a full Itinerary of events, activities, music, and food for all ageseverything will be free. Donation jars will be present at each location. All gifts will benefit the food pantry. A community pancake dinner will end the celebration at 5:00pm. For more information call HAYC3 at 686-9050. HOUSING REHAB GRANTS: The Village of Schuylerville is proud to announce the continued availability of housing rehabilitation grant funds through the NYS Office of Homes and Community Renewal. SHOPPE OFF BROADWAY THRIFT STORE REOPENED The Shoppe Off Broadway thrift store has been closed over the holidays to clean the shop and re-stock the shelves. The Shoppe reopened on Wednesday, January 11 at 1 pm. Shoppe volunteers have enjoyed a well-earned rest and are looking forward to greet customers once again. There is still a large inventory of winter merchandise available at bargain prices. We visited Adirondack Seafood located at 115 River Street in Hudson Falls, NY. I had a smoked Salmon sandwich which comes with fries or cole slaw. It was excellent! For dessert I had raspberryrhubarb pie. That, too, was excellent. The raspberries and rhubarb come from a farm in Queensbury. The filling was an inch and 1/4 thick! All homemade. Loved it. The lunch was every bit as good as Red Lobster-maybe better. Rating Excellent.

Sun 8am-2pm www.physicaladvantage.net HERITAGE CENTER IN SALEM: Just in time to help celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Historic Salem Courthouse has been designated a Heritage Center by Lakes to Locks Passage, Inc. Visitors coming to the Courthouse Community Center and the Salem area will be met by community members reaching out to provide meaningful information, share authentic experiences and help provide a unique opportunity for guests. Lakes to Locks Passage connects historic, natural, cultural and recreational resources along the Champlain Canal, Upper Hudson River, Lake George and Lake Champlain region. As a Heritage Center, the CCC will be a keeper of community culture and will help build public awareness, appreciation and participation in the historic, natural and cultural resources of the area. Several Heritage Centers are planned for the Champlain Canal corridor for this purpose. On December 14, 2011, the Town of Salem Board passed a resolution in support of this effort. A meeting at the CCC has been planned for Thursday, January 19th at 7 pm to answer questions, collect stores and share a passion for the area. The CCC is located at 58 East Broadway in Salem, and the public is invited to attend.

FIFTH ANNUAL STANLEY J. YURGARTIS MEMORIAL FAMILY FISHING DERBYThe Dunham's Bay Fish & Game Club will hold their fifth annual Stanley J. Yurgartis memorial family fishing derby on Glen Lake on Saturday, Jan. 21. Fishing hours are from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. with registration beginning at 6 a.m. at the Docksider Restaurant on Glen Lake Road in Queensbury. The cost for this tournament is $15 per person and includes a hot lunch buffet at the Docksider following the weigh in. There are prizes for adults who catch the longest rainbow trout, pickerel and perch and youth prizes for the longest pickerel and perch. Glen Lakes public access available at the Town of Queensbury's car-top only boat launch and access will also be available for this event at the Docksider. Access is NOT allowed at either of these locations for ATVs or snowmobiles. Unsafe ice conditions may warrant the cancelation of this event. If it is canceled, the club will do everything it can to alert anglers. Rehearsals will be held at Christ Church United Methodist, 54 Bay Street Glens Falls from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. each Tuesday evening. Under the direction of Penny Schiek, the chorus, currently consisting of approximately 70 members, will be preparing music for their concert in early May. No auditions are required; however, members must be willing to commit to attending at least 75% of rehearsals. The chorus is in particular need of male voices at this time. The 100-voice Chorale and professional orchestra will be joined by soloists Susan Hermance Fedak and Keith Kibler in Maurice Durufles Requiem. Due to circumstances beyond our control, St. Josephs Catholic Church is not handicap accessible in winter. The Battenkill Chorale recently returned from a thrilling choral tour of Austria and the Czech Republic. In addition to sold out concerts in Vienna and Prague, the Chorale was given special access to historical sites in the former Terezin concentration camp, where they sang in honor of the thousands who lived and perished there. Plans are underway for a 2014 choral tour to Estonia, Finland, and St. Petersburg, Russia. Mezzo soprano Susan Hermance Fedak has appeared with the Berkshire Lyric Theatre, the Glens Falls Symphony, and the Lake George Opera Company, and been soloist with many of the Capital Districts choral ensembles. A resident of Albany, Ms. Fedak is Associate Minister of Music and Arts at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Director of the Saratoga Childrens Chorus, and newly appointed Conductor of the Burnt Hills Oratorio Society for the 2012-13 season. Bass-baritone Keith Kibler made his national debuts at the age of twenty-four with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the Boston Symphony under Seiji Ozawa. He has sung leading opera roles and appeared in concert internationally with artists including Jon Humphrey and Elly Ameling. Twice a Fellow of the Tanglewood Music Center, Keith Kiblers doctorate was earned at Yale University and the Eastman School of Music. Dr. Kibler teaches in the music department of Williams College and also lectures frequently at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
