Introduction
This is an approximation of the piece Tomida-san taught us for the October 18, 2008 performance. The Kuchi Shoga in this document differs slightly from the usual practice. In particular, Don is sometimes used for a left-hand strike instead of the usual Kon; this is the way Tomida-san teaches this piece.

Performance Outline
Before the piece begins the leader performs a brief dramatic skit and engages the audience in a call and response drill, warming them up for the piece. The piece begins with an introduction, called Dokoi Sho and then eight sections labeled A through H. In the performance DVD we have there is a leader (Tomida-san, or 1) and four additional players (2 through 5). At Emeryville Taiko we have the leader and four subgroups (2 5). Groups 4 and 5 always play together, and are also the "back row". Within each section parts are divided among the leader and the subgroups. In parts A, B and C there are distinctive patterns that are repeated four times by different subgroups. In parts E through H there are various call and response patterns.

Introduction, Dokoi Sho (at 2:24 on the DVD)

The piece begins with an extended vocal section similar in form to our 8-8 drill. There are four call and response parts and a fifth part for everyone together. Each of the call and response parts starts with the leader doing the call and the other performers doing the response. In the DVD performance, the audience also joins the response. The five parts are repeated three times. The leader performs a doko don backbeat with some flourishes throughout this section. During the first repetition only a vocal response is added. On the second and third repetitions every response Dokoi is accompanied by a doko drum strike.

The patterns

Part 5, repeated four times as a crescendo (16-dokoi total)

ichi (1) Dokoi ni (2) Dokoi san (3) Dokoi shi (4) Dokoi

The repetitions
1. Leader calls, Subgroups 2 and 3 respond; vocals only. 2. Leader calls, Subgroups 2 and 3 respond; add doko strikes. 3. Leader calls, Subgroups 2 through 5 respond; include doko strikes. The last two Dokoi in part 5 are replaced by a single So-re with no drum strikes.

The pattern part A
There are four eight-beat lines in this pattern. Each line is split across two rows in the tables below for clarity. In several places, a pair of beats is re-arranged so that, for example, a full-beat Don strike is sandwiched between half-beat do and ko strikes. ichi (1)

On the DVD, groups 4 & 5 are playing a doko backbeat on repetitions 1 through 3 and the leader plays a backbeat on repetition 4. Page 3 of 10 v07

Section B (at 5:20 on the DVD)

The pattern part B
In this part the leader plays a basic backbeat, doko Don, shown at the bottom of the pattern. Against this backbeat the group plays accent beats, shown above the backbeat, as follows:

There are two eight-beat lines in this pattern. Each line is split across two rows in the tables below for clarity. In several places, a pair of beats is re-arranged so that, for example, a full-beat Don strike is sandwiched between half-beat do and ko strikes. ichi (1)

The repetitions
On the DVD, this is played as: 1. 2. 3. 4. Subgroup 1 (the leader) Subgroup 1 (the leader) Subgroups 1 - 5 (everyone) Subgroups 1 - 5 (everyone)

Tomida-san taught and we now play a different version with ten repetitions of the pattern. In this version, the leader plays all ten repetitions in full. Subgroups 2 - 5 phase in gradually, playing accent notes as follows: 1. 2. 3. and 4. 5. and 6. 7. and 8. Silent Just the very last "ko Don" Just the very last "ko Don" in each repetition The last "ko Don" in each line, i.e., two accents per repetition The second half of each line, i.e., "Don doko (su) ko Don" and "doko doko (su) ko Don" 9. and 10. Section D (at 6:32 on the DVD)

First part
This section begins with the repetition of a very simple pattern:
R L R L

do

ko

do

ko

The pause (su) after the second doko sounds very short. The pattern sounds more like a triplet and a fourth strike spread across two beats, as follows:
R ichi (1) L ni (2) R L

do

ko

do

ko

(su)

(ku)

This part of the section breaks down into two eight-repetition sets of the above pattern. The first set divides the repetitions among the subgroups as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Everyone Subgroup 1 (leader) Subgroup 2 Subgroup 3 Subgroups 4 and 5 Subgroup 1 (leader) Subgroup 2 Subgroup 3

The second set of eight repetitions is played by everyone in unison. The first repetition is played loud. The seven repetitions that follow are played as a crescendo from soft to loud. This part concludes with a quick ka after the last (8th) repetition of the pattern, then immediately flows into the next part.

Section E (at 7:08 on the DVD)

This section repeats the five Dokoi Sho vocal parts one time, omitting the so-re at the end. Like repetition 4 of the introduction, the leader does the call and maintains a doko don backbeat; every other performer does the response and includes the doko strikes.

Section F (at 7:39 on the DVD)

This section is another variation in the spirit of our 8-8 drill. It comprises a series of do Don strikes separated by varying intervals of silence and allocated among the five subgroups. Towards the end of the section the do Don is written as doko as the strikes come faster and faster. On the DVD groups 4 & 5 maintain a doko backbeat throughout this section. Play one time: Subgroup(s) Everyone: 1 2 3 4&5 Strike do Don do Don do Don do Don do Don Backbeat-only interval 2, 3, 4, 32 2, 3, 4, 8 2, 3, 4, 8 2, 3, 4, 8 2, 3, 4, 8

Section G (at 8:40 on the DVD)

This section begins with a solo by the leader (with backbeat and interplay by groups 4 & 5), ending with one repetition of the pattern from part A. Then (at 11:18 on the DVD) two of the subgroups play the patterns from parts A and C against each other in a longer sequence while the others play free-form. Everyone comes together at the end of the section for two repetitions of the pattern from section A. Subgroups 2 and 3 play the A and C patterns: Subgroup 2 plays three (3) repetitions of part A, then two (2) more repetitions of part A. Subgroup 3 plays six (6) repetitions of part C, then two (2) repetitions of part A. Subgroups 1 (leader), 4 and 5 play free form, then two (2) repetitions of part A.

Since part C (two eight-beat lines) is half as long as part A (four eight-beat lines) the groups come together for the final two repetitions of part A and then end at the same time.

Section H (at 12:06 on the DVD)

This is the final part of the piece. The group is divided into five (5) subgroups. The leader is subgroup 1 and the players are divided among subgroups 2 through 5. Repeat four (4) times: Leader: Subgroups 2 5: doko doko doko doko

NOTE: The next part is not played as a crescendo on the DVD and does not appear as a crescendo in the written version. Repeat four (4) times, as a crescendo:
