INTRODUCTION

According to research, unemployment is one of the main problems in Jamaica. This paper seeks to examine the effects of unemployment on families in the community of Eltham View. This study is being researched because there tends to be a growing trend of unemployment in this community mostly with the main breadwinners of the families and to find out the effects that this unemployment has on the families affected by unemployment. The effects of unemployment on families are generally varied but also universally negative. This therefore means that unemployment really as a negative effect on the members of a family emotionally, physically and psychologically, and also aids in the reduction in the financial capacity of the family. In some causes it can lead to divorce which can heavily impact the mental health and welfare of the child/ children.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Research previously done on this study indicates that unemployment negatively affects a familys way of life several different ways to all the members within that family. In an article written by Precious Silva (2010), she suggested that the effects of unemployment on families are invariably a negative one. The effects include reduction in the financial capacity of the family, physical, psychological and emotional impacts. In some cases it can lead to divorces which can heavily impact the mental health and welfare of the children.
