Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2012

The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to be rooted in the gift giving of the Magi. In many cultures, gifts are not exchanged at Christmas, but rather on the feast of the Epiphany. Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it, or the person who gave it to you? Read today's Gospel, Matthew 2:1-12. The gifts of the Magigold, frankincense, and myrrhhave come to be understood as symbols of Christ's royalty, divinity, and eventual suffering and death. They are special because in giving them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to be: our Savior. We pray that we will acknowledge Jesus as Savior in all that we do and say

Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord Philippine Flood Relief

Nearly 1000 people are reported dead and hundreds more are still missing after flash floods in the Philippines following Typhoon Washi hit southern Mindanao Island and surrounding areas on the weekend. An estimated 40,000 people, many of whom were already desperately poor, are now living in evacuation centres after losing their homes and possessions. Working with our partners at the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace/Caritas Canada, the Catholic Churchs official relief representative in Canada, funds will be channelled to Caritas organizations on the ground in the Philippines. Caritas teams are travelling through Mindanao to help families affected by the flooding. In particular, Caritas Philippines, known within the country as NASSA, has sent a team to the Diocese of Iligan, where the local government is said to be running out of relief supplies. Teams are assessing the damage and coordinating the emergency response. Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways: - Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website: www.archtoronto.org; - By phone through the Development office 416934-3411 - Through the parish, making cheques payable to: OLS Parish Philippines Flood Relief

Sunday, January 08, 2012 Update and Thank You From the Society of St. Vincent de Paul
The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul would like to thank all the parishioners who have made it possible for us to assist our neighbours in need throughout the past year. Your generosity is appreciated not just by us, but also by our fellow Toronto Vincentians. After we met our needs we were able to transfer over $30,000.00 to Etobicoke Particular Council which enables less affluent parishes to have access to the money they need to assist their neighbours. In addition, $10,000.00 was sent by Etobicoke to Toronto Central Council to help defray the costs of shelters for women, homes for the addicted etc. Recently we received a thank you note from one of our families. It read in part I am so sorry I have nothing to give back. But I will try, please tell everyone who has helped me. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please continue to remember us and our neighbours in need in your prayers and thank you for supporting us through the Poor Box, the Marygrove Camp collection, the Bundle Up Weekend collections and the December special collection. If you are interested in joining the Society please contact the parish office. We are particularly in need of a secretary (with computer access and email capability) who would attend monthly meetings, take and distribute minutes, maintain records etc. Further information about the work of this lay organization of charity can be found at the parish website.
