The Basics
1. UZZAP is a messaging product that’s scheduled for public launch on July 6, 2008
with a 2-week free trial period until July 20, 2008. Rather than send messages as SMS
or MMS, it allows IP-based messaging on mobile phones or PC, similar to sending
messages on the Internet. Using your phone you can send messages to other Uzzap
users, IM with buddies on other popular messengers, send SMS directly from client (E-
SMS) & e-Mail.
You can also connect to multiple buddies via group chat or chat with other users in
chatrooms. Uzzap is the only all-in-one messaging service. The only one that does all
the above plus text bundle! This is Extended Messaging (EM) only by Uzzap
Note, the java client will require phones to have Java MIDP2.0.

as the address book and native SMS. As testing is completed on each handset a matrix
of functionality supported on each phone will be developed.
*Please look out for changes to the supported phone list. User manual will be updated
as we add new capable handsets
3. How do I tell what version of the program I need for my GPRS capable
phone?
It’s automatically done for you. When you download the phone, Uzzap server will
detect your handset and will allow you to download the right one.
You will also enjoy 10 e-SMS/day* (sent using Uzzap) during this free trial period.
Reply to E-SMS will be part of the Unlimited Text Package, if there’s any, or Standard
SMS rate. However, if you decide to surf to other sites, then standard GPRS/3G
charging will apply.
Getting Started
Send the command SET GPRS <phone model> or SET 3G <phone model> or SET
<phone model> to 211.
For example, if you have a Nokia N77, the command is SET 3G N77 and
send to 211.
After sending the appropriate commands, you will receive a series of text messages.
Follow all the instructions received to install the OTA settings. Just to
be on the safe side, we recommend you restart your phone after installing the
settings.
After the settings are installed, your phone should have SMART’s three APN
settings: Smart GPRS, Smart MMS, and Smart Internet.
Uzzap will work on either Smart GPRS or Smart Internet APN. It will also run using
GSM/GPRS, UMTS or 3G (and in future UMTS/HSDPA also).
All steps to download the program, including the SMS message and the download itself
are FREE.
On Nokia Series 60 phones you will also be asked for the default access point (APN),
just set it to “Automatic”
* if you’re having problem connecting to GPRS, go back to Login to Network, select
Manual or Network Access Point and set it to “Smart Internet” then click Login
When all done entering your details, click on “Continue” and let the system process
your registration. The system sends the mobile number to the server to check if it
already exists in the system. If yes – reject the number as already registered.
Other possible outcomes following from this stage in the process are:
Condition Message Action
Number already Message back to user “The Navigate the user back to the
registered number you entered is already first registration screen for
registered to another user. Please them to enter their number
try again.”
Number invalid Message back to user “The Navigate the user back to the
format number you entered is not valid. first registration screen for
Please try again.” them to enter their number
Number passes Message to the user “Connected Continue with registration –
basic tests OK! Let’s continue with your see below
registration details.”
Left soft key is set to “OK”
See example screen below:
If the connection is successful and the mobile number meets tests, the user receives
the following message: “Connection Ok! Let’s continue with your registration”
The User clicks OK and is then shown a screen to enter their remaining registration
details:
During this time, if the validation SMS with PIN arrives in the SMS Inbox, the system
automatically reads the message and confirms the mobile number. When this happens
the following message is displayed to the user:
Mobile Number
Validation
We have confirmed your
number via an SMS. Once
you complete your
registration you can start
using Uzzap immediately.
OK
When the user presses “OK” take them back to what they were doing.
Alternatively, if the SMS is delayed (this could be due to the network being busy for
example) then at the completion of registering the following message is displayed to
the user:
3. Logging In
Now that you’re fully registered, select the first option on the menu, Login to the
network.
In the scenario where the system has been able to automatically validate the Pin, when
the registration is complete, the user is automatically logged in to the system.
From the First Uzzap screen you can choose the Forgotten Password option. This allows
you to enter your User ID or Mobile number – then you will receive a link to your email
address that allows you to reset your password.
The Main Menu is a screen that shows rows of buttons that access the various
functions of the program.
Settings – allows you to set auto start, edit your profile, change
password, change mobile number, auto message display and set offline settings
Silent Mode – Mutes the alert tone
Battery Saving Mode- gives you tips on how to maximize you battery
life
Subscription – Presents a list of options relating to purchasing a
subscription and viewing your purchase history and status.
You may wish to select “Auto Start” from the Settings Button (see above) which will
allow Uzzap to start automatically when the phone starts (only available on Symbian
phones). You may also wish to set up a soft key on your phones front screen to give
you easy access to Uzzap. For Nokia phones use the personalization options under
settings to set Uzzap as a shortcut or an active standby application.
You can also send invitations by IM to buddies on your other messenger accounts. Just
highlight their buddy name and select the option “Invite”.
You can run the Buddy Matching anytime by selecting it from the Main menu.
Check the section in the Buddy List called “Action Required” to see which friends
have not yet approved your buddy request.
Another approach is to press and hold the menu button on a Symbian phone. This will
show you a list of applications running in the phone – you can choose and switch to
where you want to go.
Using Uzzap
One way to make the Uzzap icon easy to find on Nokia phones is to include as one of
the Active Standby apps. This means you can find it right on the default screen.
On Nokia Series 60 phones, this is set by going into Settings / General / Personalization
/ Standby mode / Active Standby apps. Or Shortcuts
You can also speed things along by setting the program to automatically log in your ID
and password when you run the program.
You can also tell Uzzap to start whenever your phone starts by choosing Settings from
the Uzzap main menu and then choosing Auto Start.
The EM Buddy List is the starting point of Uzzap. This is usually divided into:
Other contacts can be landline users, email users and even international contacts. This
allows you to use the convenience of Uzzap to communicate with everyone you know!
To add Other Contacts, select “Options” while in the Uzzap Buddy List and select
“Add/Invite Buddy”, then “Add Other Contact”. You can either do it “Manually” or “Add
from Phonebook”. If its “Add Manually”, you have to enter the Nickname, Mobile
Number and Email Address. They will now be listed in your buddy list.
Profile – Displays the profile of the buddy, shows full status message
With Other Contacts, your message options (dependant on the information you have
for them) are:
Start GSM Call – to do a regular call
Send E-SMS– send E-SMS to your Smart contacts that are non-Uzzap
Send SMS – send regular SMS to your non-Smart mobile contacts
Send Email – send an email if you have stored an email address for this contact
Invite – Send an SMS or Email invitation to download Uzzap
Profile – shows Mobile number and nickname
Remove Buddy - Takes the SMS buddy out of your list
View History - View a history of your conversations with this buddy
This is limited only to Uzzap buddies – currently you can’t include Other Contacts or IM
buddies to conferences.
9. What’s a TAB?
A Tab is an existing chat session with a buddy. Each new chat is displayed in a separate
tab. If there are too many tabs open, and this confuses you, you can select “Close Tab”
from the Options.
There is also a special group already set up for you called “My Friends”. You can put
your close friends here so you can find them easily when your buddy list gets long.
There is a quick way to put buddies into this group using the tick box on the
communication menu. Be patient when you tick or un-tick this option since the system
has to tell the server about the change before it will display on your buddy list.
You can rename any of the groups in the system including the delivered groups such as
“My Friends” – you may wish to call it “Pamilya” and use it just for your family.
Just press Options to see the complete list of choices available to you.
Also from the screen showing the room list you can create a private room just for you
and some of your buddies. Choose the option “Start Buddy Group Chat”, then choose
which of your Buddies (from your buddy list) you want to include. They will all receive
an invitation to join the room.
13. How do I connect to my Smart Buddy friends who are non-Uzzap users?
Add them in your Other Contacts list and send them E-SMS.
There is also a Linux version, although this is still being tested. A future version for
native Mac OSX is in the roadmap.
From the Windows Start button, select “Programs” and you should see the “Uzzap”
folder. This will contain two program icons – one called ‘Uzzap’ for the Messenger and
one called ‘Uninstall’
which will remove the program
.
You may want to copy the Uzzap icon to your Windows desktop to make it easier to
find.
5. Is there a difference between using the mobile version and the PC version?
It is basically the same program, with a few changes:
a. Since there is no phone address book your PC can read, functions that require
access to your phonebook will not work – for example you cannot add a buddy from the
phonebook. Auto Buddy Matching cannot be initiated when you are using the PC client
– but remains active if you have previously set it from your mobile phone.
b. Assured Message Delivery still works where the other party is using a mobile phone
to ensure they receive your message
c. E-SMS is available where the other party is in the Smart network?
d. The subscription screens are still available on the PC client so you can check your
history and billing status.
