Rugby: Pythons training starts this Wednesday night at 7pm at the pool at Falls Hair Beauty Spa. Star: building open day is next Friday 3 February, so come in and see the inside of the original Canowindra newspaper and printery. From 3pm there will be a free sausage sizzle & drinks, with a special guest to launch the completion of the internal works at 3:30pm. Laps: for those motivated & energetic souls who like to get up early and exercise, the pool will be opening for lap swimming from 6 to 8am every morning. Entry is via the back gate & swimmers are asked to vacate the pool before 8am. Closed: the pool will be closed to the public this Sunday 29 January for the Swimming Carnival. This is a timely reminder for teams to put their nominations in for the Business House Relay, to be held on the day. Garden: working bee for this Thursday at the Community Garden followed by a BBQ at 6pm. There are lots of weeds needing to be kept in check. It should still leave anyone interested enough time to get to the official proceedings at the Park. We have had lots of people picking fresh beans, lettuce, silverbeet etc it has been really great!

Still wondering how to spend Australia Day this Thursday? Then make your way up to Tom Clyburn Oval around 10am and spend the day in great company and cheer on our local Cricket Club and League teams on Pink Stumps Day, a fundraiser for the McGrath Foundation. As well as raffles, full bar and canteen facilities will be available, so just bring a chair, some gold coins, a hat and some sunscreen. This is the annual Twenty20 Australia Day event for the Canowindra Cricket Club, and this year the League boys have put a team together for the day. The new 2012 Canowindra Tigers President Damian (Rusty) Kennedy, is very keen to be involved in the fundraiser day, being a past player for the cricket club and current player for the Tigers. Rusty attended the local Catholic School and High School before moving away for a number of years, only to return in 2006 and work his way up the chain. He took out the Coach of the Year Award in 2009 and numerous Players Player and Best and Fairest Awards over the years. Rusty will have some big shoes to fill with the departure of the former long serving president Andrew Pull. For anyone who may not know Andrew, you will still be able to see his organisational skills in force as he has taken on the position of President of Woodbridge Cup. Well done Andrew and we wish you luck in your 2012 year, and the committee, teams and all involved with the Tigers club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Rusty and wish him good luck for the year ahead. Training for all grades in the 2012 league season commences this week, with the youth League and senior grades starting on Wednesday 25 January from 6.30pm at Tom Clyburn Oval, and then again on Friday night. The Tigress training started on Sunday from 11.30am at the Canowindra Swimming Pool. Anyone interested in playing for any of these grades should come along. Confidence is high among the Canowindra Cricket Club after strong performances and big wins in the last two matches in Cowras Twenty20 competition. Cricket Captain Nick Guthrie (above left) predicts rivalry will be strong between the two clubs in what is sure to be a grudge match, with the Tigers, in particular Captain OMalveney (above right) and Damian Kennedy, being quietly confident of beating the cricket boys at their own game. All are welcome to come and watch what should be a great game with plenty of fun and laughs. Pink Stumps Day is 10am this Thursday, Australia Day, Canowindra Cricket Club versus Tigers Rugby League Club. Come along and support a great cause and have heaps of fun. Afterwards, from 3pm in Memorial Park, there will be Thong and Gumboot Throwing, Whip Cracking Competitions and Boat Races leading up to the official ceremony at 6:30pm. There are plenty of things to get out and do in our town this Thursday on Australia Day.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT REFORM A workshop early next month will determine Cabonne Councils response to a plan that aims to shape the future of Local Government for a quarter of a century. The Council will meet on February 6 to discuss the State Governments draft Destination 2036 Action Plan and prepare the Councils response to a request for feedback on the plan. Destination 2036 is one of the largest programs undertaken in Local Government and follows the involvement of all the States councils at a summit in Dubbo last year. Local Government Minister Don Page and the Division of Local Government have identified a range of issues and reforms which has been on the agenda for many years. Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said his Council, through its involvement with the Wellington Blayney Cabonne Strategic Alliance, has been active in reform for a number of years and would not miss the opportunity to have an input into the action plan. It is pleasing that the WBC reform model, involving strategic alliances, resource sharing and collaborative arrangements, is one that has been identified in the draft action plan, Cr Dowling said. But there are still many other issues that need to be addressed, such as constitutional recognition of Local Government, funding, roles and responsibilities, a review of the Local Government Act and intergovernmental agreements. Cr Dowling said members of the public were also welcome to make a comment on the draft action plan which could be viewed on the Destination 2036 webpage via the Division of Local Governments website www.dlg.nsw.gov.au I urge you to read the draft action plan and have your say on a document that could have a significant impact on the area in which you live, he said. FOLK BACK FOR 2012 Folk@Canowindra is set to start off the year in party mode, with a fun and lively group called Milltown as our feature act 4-6pm on Sunday 29 January. Based in Bathurst, Milltown play a mix of mostly old time American string band music and songs influenced by the backgrounds of the band members: rock and roll; Irish; traditional Australian; and bluegrass. Band members are Ken Lambeth (guitar), Tony Stuart (fiddle, mandolin and accordion), James Church (Dobro), Mike Cook (double bass) and Rebecca Pagan (clawhammer banjo). Milltown also do a few original songs and instrumentals. Any old time band should have at least one song about a chicken, a train or a girl called Sally, and Milltown have all three! If you want to have a preview of their style, check out "Milltown-Choctaw Hayride" (amongst other songs) on YouTube. Folk@Canowindra is now entering its third year - a growing monthly gathering of acoustic musicians, poets, and warm and appreciative listeners. READ NEW VALUATION NOTICES Cabonne landowners have been urged to carefully read new land values notices following a revaluation by the NSW Valuer General. The State Government is sending Notices of Valuation to the owners of 7100 properties in the Shire and Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling said it was important that all ratepayers noted their new land values, which are used by councils to determine rates. Land owners can lodge objections with the Valuer General if they are not satisfied with the new value, Cr Dowling said. However, many people often do not realise the impact of the Valuer Generals revaluation until they receive their rates notice. By then it is usually too late to lodge an appeal with the State Government. Ratepayers have only 60 days to lodge an objection. The final date to object is printed on the front of the Notice of Valuation Cr Dowling said he was disappointed that the revaluation was announced during the January holiday period, as was the case with the previous revaluation of Cabonne in 2007. A lot of people are still away on holidays at this time and announcements such as these often can be overlooked during this period, he said. The Valuer General Philip Western said property sales were the most important factor in determining new land values. The total land value for Cabonne Shire has increased from $1.566 billion four years ago to $1.676. Mr Western said the value of residential land had increased moderately while there was a slight increase in commercial, industrial and rural land values However, the values for large, timbered grazing properties in the east of the Shire showed significant increases, he said. The wide variation in sizes and locations of hobby farms and rural home sites across the Shire resulted in a variety of changes to ruralresidential values. SENIOR CRICKET Canowindra Cricket Club has advanced to the final of the Doug Wright Shield Twenty20 competition after a strong win over Valleys last weekend. After losing the toss and bowling first Canowindra made the perfect start with Nick Guthrie taking two wickets in his first two overs while fellow opening bowler Brendan Traves also took one in his first over. From 3/5 Valleys started to score a little easier thanks to some poor fielding and dropped catches by the Canowindra fielders. Nick Traves removed Scott Gray and Ian Morrow soon produced a run out to remove Greg Garlick for 45. Nick Traves grabbed his second wicket on the last ball of the innings to leave Valleys finishing at 6/92 after their 20 overs. Canowindras run chase began brightly before Peter Guthrie again fell early for 8. Fellow opener Jacob Devlin then took over, dismantling the Valleys bowlers and striking the ball all over the field before Brendan Traves fell for 6. Ian Morrow and Devlin then put on a match winning partnership before Devlin was caught just short of a deserved half century, finishing on 43. Morrow remained 25 not out and Nick Guthrie 7 not out to easily guide Canowindra home in only the fourteenth over. Next week Canowindra take on Grenfell in the inaugural Twenty20 final. The boys have taken very well to the shorter form of the game in their first attempt and confidence is high leading in to what should be a very good final.

SWIMMING CLUB The relay got cancelled at Swimming Club this week as big dark storm clouds rolled in from the west and Jarrod said , 100 freestyle and no more. Before that Olivia McNamara came out on top in the Spoon final as she beat both her brothers to take out the Spoon in a personal best time of 29 seconds. Lydia Coady smashed her best time in the 33m freestyle by 11 seconds. Isobelle Lynch beat her breaststroke PB by 10 seconds while Alex Flannery improved his backstroke time by 6 seconds. Backstroke heat number 6 was the belly flop heat and while Amara Flannery elected to do a bomb the undoubted winner of the Belly Flop was Ellis Hawker who made an amazing cracking sound as he connected with the water. A little birdie later told your correspondent that such is the fame of the Flop Ellis had been practicing. Good to see that laps are not the only thing that is being practiced. Dont forget your swimmers contributions to the Summer hamper for the Carnival this Sunday; bring them to Swimming Club on Friday night. CANOWINDRA TENNIS COMP The Canowindra Doubles Tennis Competition will re-start on Thursday 9 February 2012. All teams need to be registered by Wednesday 1 February. Teams interested in playing in this competition need to ring Kylie Pull on 02 6344 2244 to register. The cost will be $50 per player and will be required to be paid by the second round of the competition. All volunteers will be greatly appreciated by attending the working bee to be held on Saturday 4 February at the Tennis Courts.
