Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Behaviors


The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a self-administered, school-based, confidential, and anonymous survey that was conducted in Duval County Public Schools during the spring of 2011. This is part of a national effort by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to obtain information pertaining to youth social behaviors. These behaviors include but are not limited to: violence, safety, sex, nutrition and weight management, suicide, and more. There were 3,336 students from 21 Duval County public high schools who participated in the YRBS.

Males have a higher score in six of the eight alcohol, tobacco and other drug indicators. Male rates are statistically significantly higher than females in current cigarette use, current marijuana use, lifetime ecstasy use and lifetime steroids use.

Duval County Map by Health Zones (HZ)


Health Zone 1 Overall, six of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. HZ1 had the lowest percents of all health zones for six of the ten risk factors in 2011. Three of these were statistically significantly lower than at least one health zone: Lifetime alcohol use Current alcohol use and Episodic heavy drinking. Health Zone 2 Overall, nine of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. The only increase was current use of marijuana. HZ2 had the lowest percent (4.0%) for current cocaine use in 2011 HZ2 was statistically significantly lower than HZ6 for episodic heavy drinking. Health Zone 3 Overall, eight of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. HZ3 had the lowest percent (7.9%) for current marijuana use and ever use inhalant in 2011. HZ3 was statistically, significantly lower than HZ6 for episodic heavy drinking.

Health Zone 4 Overall, nine of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. The only risk factors that increased was ever use alcohol. HZ4 was tied with HZ2 and HZ3 for the lowest percent (4.2%) for ever use methamphetamine in 2011. HZ4 was statistically significantly lower than HZ6 in current alcohol use and episodic heavy drinking in 2011. Health Zone 5 Overall, five of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. HZ5 had the highest percent for current use of smokeless tobacco (8.7%) and offered, sold, given an illegal drug by someone on school property (36.7%). HZ5 had the only increase in current use of smokeless tobacco (6.4% to 8.7%) from 2009 to 2011. Health Zone 6 Overall, eight of the ten risk factors increased from 2009 to 2011. HZ6 had the highest percent for eight of the ten risk factors. HZ6 was statistically significantly higher than at least one health zone for lifetime alcohol use and current alcohol use. HZ6 was statistically significantly higher than all the other health zones for episodic heavy drinking in 2011.

Key Findings
Duval (2011) versus U.S. (2009) Duvals current cigarette use was statistically significantly lower than the U.S., 12.4% versus 19.5%. Ever use alcohol, current alcohol use and episodic heavy drinking are statistically significantly lower in Duval than the U.S. Duval had a statistically significantly higher percentage of students than U.S. who were offered, sold or given an illegal drug by someone on school property, 33.0% versus. 22.7%. Duval (2011) versus Florida (2011)

Key Findings
Duval (2011) versus U.S. (2009) Duvals high school students had a statistically significantly lower percentage on sufficient physical actively than the U.S., 30.7% versus 37.0%. The percentage of high school students who watched three or more hours per day of television was statistically significantly higher in Duval than the U.S., 41.1% versus 24.9%. Duval high school students had a statistically significantly higher percentage than the U.S. on vomited or took laxatives to lose weight or to keep from gaining weight, 6.5% vs. 4.0%. Duval (2011) versus Florida (2011) Duvals high school students had a statistically significantly higher percentage than Florida regarding did not attend physical education classes daily, 91.0% versus 77.3%. High school students eating fruits and vegetables less than 5 times per day was statistically significantly higher in Duval than Florida, 80.4% versus 77.4%.

Key Findings
Duval (2011) versus U.S. (2009)
High school students who had sexual intercourse for the first time before age 13 years was statistically, significantly higher in Duval than the U.S., 10.4% versus 5.9%. Duvals high school students had a statistically significantly higher percentage than the U.S. for having 4 or more sexual partners, 19.0% versus 13.8%. Student who had ever been taught in school about AIDS or HIV infection was statistically significantly lower in Duval than the U.S., 81.3% versus 87.0%.

Duval (2011) versus Florida (2011)


Had sexual intercourse for the first time before age 13 years was statistically significantly higher with Duval County high school students than Florida, 10.4% versus 7.6%.

Violence, Suicide, and Safety Behaviors


The Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) is a self-administered, school-based, confidential, and anonymous survey that was conducted in Duval County Public Schools during the spring of 2011. This is part of a national effort by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to obtain information pertaining to youth social behaviors. These behaviors include but are not limited to: violence, safety, sex, nutrition and weight management, suicide, and more. There were 3,336 students from 21 Duval County public high schools who participated in the YRBS.

Five of the seven indicators have decreased from 2009 to 2011 with three of the differences being statistically significant. Attempted suicide was the only indicator that statistically significantly increased.

Health Zone 1 Overall, six of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. HZ1 had the lowest percents for four of the ten risk factors than the other health zones in 2011. Ever been bullied on school property was the only indicator statistically significantly lower than at least one health zone in 2011. In 2011, HZ1 was statistically significantly higher than other health zones on in a physical fight, attempted suicide and rarely or never wore a seat belt. Health Zone 2 Overall, eight of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. Two of these indicators statistically significantly decreased, from 2009 to 2001: Did not go to school because they felt unsafe and Threatened or injured with a weapon. Health Zone 3 Overall, seven of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. HZ3 had the lowest percents for four of the ten risk factor in 2011. In a physical fight was statistically significantly lower than at least one health zone in 2011.

Health Zone 4 Overall, six of the ten risk factors decreased from 2009 to 2011. HZ4 had the highest percent in three of the ten risk factors in 2011. Attempted suicide and in a physical fight were statistically significantly higher than at least one health zone. Key Findings
Duval (2011) versus U.S. (2009) The percent of Duvals high school students who did not go to school because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school was statistically significantly higher than the U.S., 11.0% versus 5.0%. High school students who were threatened or injured with a weapon was statistically significantly higher in Duval than the U.S., 10.7% versus 7.7%. Duval high school students had a statistically significantly higher suicide attempt percent than the U.S. The percent of Duvals high school students who did not go to school because they felt unsafe at school or on their way to or from school was statistically significantly higher than Florida, 11.0% versus 6.5%. High school students who were in a physical fight was statistically significantly higher in Duval than Florida, 32.3 versus 28.0%. The percent of high school students who were ever bullied on school property was statistically significantly higher in Duval than Florida.
