September 27, 2011 Here is your weekly update on service opportunities and other news in NWA

Bikes, Blues and BBQ 2011: Walk-up volunteers welcomed


Bikes, Blues & BBQ works very hard each year to give back to local charities within Northwest Arkansas. They will provide all volunteers with an Official BBB Volunteer Shirt, wrist bands to ride the train for the duration of the event, refreshments and two drink tickets per hour of service provided. Positions in the Beer Gardens available for over 21 Volunteers, cashier positions available, gate keeper positions and other miscellaneous positions. Volunteers are needed on September 27thOctober 1st from 10:00AM to 12:00AM. You may sign up on our site or visit one of two tents set up at the parking lot of Baum Stadium and at the Bank of Fayetteville train on Dickson. You will be assigned a project there.

Washington County Flu Shot Clinic


We will be giving shots in the schools. We also will be using netbooks to enter all of the flu shots. We start Fayetteville schools on October 17th 21st . The greatest need of volunteers will be Fayetteville High School on October 17, starting around 1230pm to 3pm. Leverett Elementary is on October 20th at 1030am to 1230pm and Ramay is October 21st at 1000am to 1230pm. We are having our Mass Flu Clinic on October 28th at the Jones Center from 8 am to 7 pm. There will be volunteer training on October 14th.

Alternative Spring Break 2012: Student coordinator position


Last year, Dream B.I.G (Believing in Girls) was a pilot program that consisted of female students facilitating a camp for young girls ages 9-13 in the Arkansas Delta. This year the program will take place in the North West Arkansas area and engage

North West Arkansas area and engage over 100 high school girls from the Marvell/ Elaine school district. Student Coordinators will serve as mentors to camp participants and assist the ASB Intern and the Center for Community Engagement with developing the camp and selecting and training ASB participants. In addition, student coordinators will be expected to establish a continuous mentoring relationship with camp participants and as well as share experiences with students who participate in other University of Arkansas ASB programs. Students will participate in a variety of reflection activities that occur before, during and after the trip designed to enhance their experience and reinforce their commitment to service. Interested students are required to submit an application and resume by Friday September 30th at 4:00 PM. Please contact Quiana Jenkins at altsb@uark.edu for more information.

Community Pre-School Playground Work Day


Community Pre-School is a non-profit school for three to five year old children learn skills to prepare them for Kindergarten. Our parents and staff would really hope you would take part in volunteering cleaning up our playground to make it more child friendly. This clean up day is scheduled for Saturday, September 30, 2011 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We would greatly appreciate your help to make our children benefit from your help to make our playground more inviting.

Terra Studios: Kids Art Day


Kids' Art Day is a benefit for 7 local children's organizations: Children's House, the NWA Children's Shelter, CASA, Children's Safety Center, Benton County Children's Advocacy Center, the SnackPack Program and Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families. At Kids' Art Day, children have the opportunity do play in clay, paint, color and create holiday gifts; parents have the opportunity to enjoy the creative process with their child(ren) and to donate to support other local children in need. They need 20 to 30 dependable volunteers who enjoy art and are patient in working with children. The hours of this festival are from Noon til 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2nd. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 11:40 a.m. to review their work area and are required to stay for the entire event; help with clean-up would be greatly appreciated.
