COMMERCIAL E-NEWSLETTER | JANUARY 2012

What matters to Z
At our heart we are about neighbourhoods. We reckon its important to actively participate in the communities we operate in and to give back in a meaningful way. Our staff living and working in Christchurch are real examples of backing New Zealand neighbourhoods, wholeheartedly going after projects to help the Christchurch community. Below are a couple of their stories: The story of the Phillipstown School van
Businesses and individuals around the country have rallied to assist the Christchurch community with financial contributions. Mark Greenstreet from our subsidiary company Mini-Tankers decided to go the extra mile and get Z involved at a grass roots level to help people still struggling to cope. Mark led a project to help Phillipstown School, a decile one primary school in central-east Christchurch. Phillipstown School had been severely affected by the earthquake on February 22nd 2011. They lost their school hall, their playground, their diesel heating, some of their classrooms and they had to deal with a lot of liquefaction. Three months ago, Mark met with Phillipstown School Principal Tony Simpson to find out what really mattered to the school. Tony explained that the work to fix the grounds and building will take years and the students really needed some positivity to move forward. Tony thought the best way to keep positive was to get out into the community and participate in educational events, sports days, cultural events, and school camps. Mark started thinking about how Z could help. At first we spoke about a possible contribution to their transport costs so they could do all these things. Currently they would hire a bus at a great cost, or try to bundle kids into teachers cars. Rather than just contribute for these expenses we decided give Phillipstown School their very own school van. Our CEO Mike Bennetts then spoke to Toyota NZ, who generously provided us with a suitable van at a discounted rate. Z spruced up the van and three weeks later it was on a truck to Christchurch from Auckland, care of a free ride from Toyota. Miles Toyota kindly provided a two year free maintenance plan, and Z also threw in some free diesel. The students were thrilled, and are looking forward to the educational opportunities now more easily open to them.

A helping hand for Lyttelton

Following the February 22nd earthquake, the port town of Lyttelton was cut off from Christchurch for about a week. This earthquake and the following aftershocks left many of the local elderly living in damaged homes. A lot of these people felt helpless, isolated and vulnerable. The Community House, a local organization, started running a Meals on Wheels programme, cooking and delivering meals for 50 elderly people in the community five nights a week. Because there was no programme of this sort running in Lyttelton before the quakes, the dedicated local volunteers were working out of a small domestic kitchen. Christine Wilson, a community facilitator, told us that they only had a small fridge for their use, and a larger fridge would make a big difference. So Steve Rea, one of our Z team based in Christchurch, sourced and donated a large commercial fridge for their kitchen on behalf of Z. Z is for New Zealand, and we reckon its important to give back to the communities that support our business. If you know any stories of other businesses, groups, or even individuals that really gave back to a community we would love to hear about it. Just drop us an email to theenergydrop@z.co.nz

Introducing ZX our new premium fuel with the Z factor

One of the many exciting things about rebranding is that we had the opportunity to develop a new premium fuel tailored to New Zealand driving conditions. After researching the most cutting edge fuel additive technologies globally, we partnered with one of the worlds leading fuel additive technology companies to bring you a new premium fuel. We then tested this extensively with New Zealand fuels both locally and overseas. The end result is ZX Premium Unleaded, the fuel for people who care what they put in their car. Were proud of all our fuels, but this ones our favourite. Youll find it at our Z service stations. Good quality fuels usually have a small amount of detergent that inhibits deposit build up on your inlet valves, and ZX is no exception. But heres the cool part it has high tech components that help remove deposit build-up on the inlet valves and by cleaning these, fuel can burn more efficiently enabling the engine to run more smoothly. So not only does it help clean your inlet valves, it continues to keep them clean. ZX also contains friction modification technology that helps improve engine efficiency by reducing friction between the cylinder liner and piston rings. We reckon the change from V-Power to ZX Premium is an exciting change, we hope you do too. If you want to know anything else about our fuels, check out our website z.co.nz or send us an email to theenergydrop@z.co.nz

Z sticking around for the future

Our sustainability policy is an important foundation in defining what is different about Z. For Z, sustainability means acting in a way that benefits the future of the communities we operate in and the planet that carries us all, while at the same time sustaining the long term future of our company. Things Z Energy holds to be true are:
Natural resources are scarce and increasingly expensive The world has limited capacity to absorb carbon emissions and waste The most important resource available to us is people This fits in nicely with New Zealands stance on sustainability. New Zealand is a ratified member of the Kyoto protocol which seeks to reduce greenhouse emissions. Named after the Japanese city where it was negotiated in 1997, the Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement to address global warming and delay climate change. It aims to reduce the total greenhouse gas emissions of developed countries to five per cent below the level they were in 1990. The first commitment period is complete this year. Between 2008 and 2012, New Zealands target was to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to the level they were in 1990, or take responsibility for excess emissions. We aspire to do our share when it comes to making commitments to a sustainable future. The biggest commitment we will make is to act to reduce our customers carbon intensity by helping New Zealanders reduce their use of fossil fuels. We will do this by working with other organisations and investing in new technologies, and by researching and commercialising viable alternative fuels we reckon can also help our customers reduce their own impacts. We will also use less and waste less. It is important to us that we ensure that our own operations are efficient. Watch this space this year as we keep you up to date with what we are doing to make sure that Z is for New Zealand in a sustainable way.

Bringing Z to our customer tanks

We have many Commercial assets at many customer locations around New Zealand. Just like everything else that used to be Shell New Zealand or Greenstone Energy branded, it needs to be changed to Z branding. The work will commence at the end of January and will run through to the end of May. What we will be doing is looking at current customer tanks with one or a combination of these branding options: Greenstone Energy (words only, no logo) Shell product name (eg (Shell) Dieseline) Shell paint colour (yellow) there are a few black or green tanks also; the majority are white Customer branding No branding at all These assets will be branded to Z Energy. The scope of the work for Gilbarco, our Asset Maintenance partners, is to remove existing branding, give the tanks a bit of a facelift and apply the new branding.
