PLAN OF ACTION CHALKED OUT BY THE IQAC IN THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TOWARDS QUALITY ENHANCEMENT (ATTACH SEPARATE SHEET IF REQUIRED). YMCA College of Physical Education is a pioneering institution in the field of Physical Education and Sports in India and was established in the year 1920. The college today stands as a Monument to the Missionary Vision, Courage and Faith of its founder Late Harry Crowe Buck. The University Grants Commission and the University of Madras conferred the status of Autonomy upon our college in 1986 by virtue of its reputed services to humanity through physical education, health education, recreation and its allied sciences. The College is affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University, accredited by NAAC with Grade A and recognized by NAAC. The courses run by the college are BPE., D.P.Ed., BPEd., BMS., MPED., MPhil., Regular and Part time Ph.D. The College is also offering B.S.c., and M.Sc. in Fitness Exercise Rehabilitation and Nutritional Care, Post Graduate Diploma in Sports Coaching Tennis and Swimming as Evening College courses.

CREDENTIALS .OF THE COLLEGE The YMCA College of Physical Education was established in 1920, at Madras, as the first Physical Education College in South East Asia.

Mr. Harry Crowe Buck, our founder and legend in the field of Physical Education, was the coach for Indian Athletic team which had been to the 1924 Olympics at Paris.

This institution is a prestigious project of National Council of YMCAs of India and a Christian Minority Institution.

YMCA College is recognized by the National Council of Teacher Education.

It is an Aided College, under the Government of Tamilnadu. An Autonomous College affiliated to the Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University.

YMCA College is accredited by National Assessment Accreditation Council (NAAC) as A Grade.

YMCA College has attained an Iconic Status having excelled over 88 years, and it is Role Model for all Physical Education Colleges and Departments in our countrys Higher Education realm.

The College has grown into an outstanding institution of higher learning and dedicated to the growth of scientific physical education from Nursery School up to Doctoral degree all in one campus in the heart of the city.

The following quality enhancement measures have been undertaken towards since the previous assessment and accreditation:a) Curriculum development based on the need of the stakeholders b) Introduction of new courses c) Submission of proposals for Career Oriented program to UGC d) Professional Preparations e) Introduction of Credit System f) Examination reforms g) Introduction of records in Sports Psychology h) Curriculum revision done in line with Springfield College to meet the global standards

1. Activities reflecting the goals and objectives of the institution The Institutions mission and the goals are reflected through the curricula. The college introduced martial arts such as Kalari, Judo, Boxing for the women students in line with the modern trends in Physical Education. The academic excellence has been achieved by regular curricular revision, modification and introduction of new papers like Adapted Physical Education and Value Education courses. Also the college encourages our student teachers to take up officiating examinations conducted by various associations in sports and games.

Initiative towards faculty development programme A record number of teachers have been awarded with Ph.D. this year, namely Dr.E.Simson Jesudass, Dr.Samuel Jesudoss, Dr.S.Glady Kirubakar & Dr.S.Johnson Premkumar. Three teachers have cleared NET/SLET Mr.Praveen Doss, Mr.K.Karthikeyan (JRF) & Ms.Naveena Priya. Three teachers have submitted Ph.D., (Mr.Davidson Abraham, Mr.Merlin Thanga Daniel and Mr.Jerome David) and three are pursuing Ph.D Teachers participated in Inter National, National Seminars/ Workshops/ Conference and claim loyalty to their research papers. 8. Seminars/workshops conducted Keeping the current demands, expectations, requirements and necessities of the physical education faculties of schools and colleges, our college organized a Workshop on Latest Changes and New Rules in Sports and Games on 25th & 26th August 2009 for Physical Directors and Physical Education Teachers in Schools/Colleges to update their knowledge. Dr.J.P.Sugumar, Registrar, Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University inaugurated the function and Dr.Gautam, working President of National

Association of Physical Education & Sports presided over the closing function on 26th August 2009 and Dr. (Mrs.) Grace Helina, Prof. & Head, Exercise Physiology & Nutrition; Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function. One day workshop on Sports for a Better Life for Physical Educationists/Coaches/Sports Directors was organized on 6th January 2010 at the YMCA College Conference Hall. The workshop was co-ordinated by Dr. (Mrs) Jothi Dayanandan. Workshop on Strengthening and Conditioning was conducted on 26th & 27th November 2009 for M.P.Ed., I & II. Mr.Robinson, Preventive Officer of Customs organized this camp. The experts from International Performance Sciences, USA., Mr. Scott O Dell and Mr.Crigh Schinck handled the session on weight training, speed, agility, plyometrics, and periodization for two days. The workshop was very useful for the students. The workshop was concluded with the feedback of our students and certificates were distributed to the participants. 9. New collaborative research programmes To evolve and keep pace with the changing time and development in educational system, the college has taken a step to have a strong linkage with Worchester University, London, and Springfield College of Physical Education, Massachusetts, U.S.A. We have also established close links with the department of physical education of Madras Christian College, Queen Marys College and SIET College under Cluster College Scheme. Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University supports the college in conducting collaborative programs as distance education courses which enables our students to obtain additional degrees. 30 students have enrolled themselves for the Post Graduate Diploma in Yoga. Our college has signed an MoU, with the Fitness Society of India for organizing Fitness related programs in India. Two students (Joshua & Fredy Jose) were motivated to join the Worchester University for M.S. Programme in Sports Management.

12. Research grants received from various agencies The research grants received from the UGC through the merged schemes are used for the research program. The resource centre is established with several computers and the inter net connectivity which enabled the research programs to grow further. The research committee is formed and the Management assistance and the UGC fund has helped in establishing 14 research laboratories at the college .There are lots of research going on by the M.Phil and Ph.D scholars which make the research input great and strong.

14. Citation index of faculty members and impact factor There are so many citations index by the research personals who refer the thesis and make reference in their thesis. One of the M.Phil scholars of the Sarada College has a citation on the study done by Dr.Sheila Stephen who has done a study on the Partially hearing impaired children. Dr.Jothis study on Pregnant women had made the obsessed women and pregnant women to refer her results and studies done on the pregnant women had made always the reference made by Dr. Jothi and the recommendations.

Honors/Awards to the faculty: National and International The teachers are always honored when they make presentations at the international conferences .There may not be any award as such but they excel in their performance and uniquely praised for their presentations. Dr.Glory in her work at the International championship, as an official has performed well to the appreciation of all the higher officials. 16. Internal resources generated The financial and the human resources are strengthened by way of programs .The human resources are developed by Organizing the faculty development program Attending refresher courses /orientation programs Organizing workshop and seminar for the scholars and the teachers.

The financial resources generated exhibit a marked difference in the quality program organized by the college .There are various sources through which the college could generated special funds . This caters to the need of browsing the 50000 e journals by the students and the faculty. The INFLIBNET and the DST (Direct System transmission) for the BMS students to educate the students on differentially abled is done through the live relay program from RCI the Rehabilitation Council of India. 18. Four teachers have got the Government approval and the rest are well paid by the management with all additional facility at the campus which gives them the good working atmosphere for the teachers. 23. Courses in which student assessment of teachers is introduced and the action taken on student feedback M.P.Ed. B.P.Ed. The students feedback is collected and the data thus collected is used for review by the Principal and the result on the feedback is forwarded to the Secretary. However the teachers quality on teaching and preparation is viewed seriously by the Principal and she gives personal counseling to the teachers and guidance to improve the quality of the teaching .

The alumni organize home coming which makes them to honor the Alma mater. Their interaction with the present students and the teachers motivate them to function perfectly understanding the need for the improvement due to the present scenario.

32. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association PTA meetings are organized regularly and proper review activities are planned based on the recommendations of the Parents. Students facilities and the college development in terms of programs and the infrastructure is done after getting the feedback from the parents .The students results and their progress is intimated to them through the progress reports sent every semester. 33. 34. Performance in sports activities a. Buck Sports Festival Our Founder Missionary of this institution late Harry Crowe Buck is honoured and remembered by the college every year with a colourful and high spirited sports festival for about five days. This mega event was organized between 24th & 28th August 2010 and was inaugurated by Dr.(Mrs)Rachel Jebaraj, Principal & Secretary, St.Christophers College of Education, Vepery. About 800 competitors from various colleges and schools around Chennai participated in various games and athletic events. b. Inter Collegiate Tournament Inter Collegiate Tournament of Tamilnadu Physical Education and Sports University was hosted by YMCA College of Physical Education between 28th & 30th September 2010 in the games like (1) Basketball (Men) Cricket (Men) Hockey (Men and Women) Weight. Lifting and Power Lifting (Men and Women). Mr.V.Baskaran, Former Hockey Olympian inaugurated the function and Mr.J.S.Jeyakardas, Correspondent & Secretary presided over the function. First time, we have hosted Weight Lifting and Power Lifting trials in our campus. More than 400 students (Men & Women) from various affiliated colleges participated in the trials. Our college Men team won the Athletic championship both in Inter collegiate & Inter Physical Education Tournaments.

c. BASEBALL National Championship Seven of our students represented Tamilnadu in the baseball championship conducted during November 2010. d. FENCING Jijo of M..Phil participated in the National Game at Jharkand and bagged Silver medal in Fencing during January 2011. He participated in 21st senior Nationals and secured 2nd position held at Hyderabad. He participated in 8th Senior State and secured I and III position held at Coimbatore.

e.HOCKEY Vasudevan of B.P.Ed., represented Tamilnadu in the 34th National Games held at Jharkand 2011. He represented Tamilnadu in the Senior Nationals held at Bhopal. e. ENRICHMENT PROGRAM Five of our women students participated in Chennai Youth Camp organized by Friends Missionary Prayer Band on 11th September 2010 at Madras Christian College School, Chetpet, Chennai. Seminar on Personality Enrichment was organized on October 2nd 2010 for women students by Shalom Ministry. It is very appropriate to bring out the highlights of the academic programs, achievements of staff and students, and professional activities of the college. 35. Incentives to outstanding sportspersons Students who have represented the University were given incentives like Track suit and playing kit. Best sportsmen and women are given preference in their higher studies. 36. 37. Activities of the Guidance and Counseling unit UGC has allocated a huge amount towards the Guidance and Counseling program for the students. This includes the Pre marital counseling, personal counseling and the career counseling. The counselors are brought from the centres and separate room is allocated for the process to happen with all privacy. Men students are guided about the anti social behavior, pre marital sex and so on. The counseling program organized at the college is very much appreciated by the management and the beneficiaries of the college. The students volunteered to get the help and the counseling from the expert.

38. Placement services provided to students The college has formed a Placement cell/ unit which is very successful in providing not only career counseling but placement opportunities . It arranges for the Campus interview staring from January so that various agencies who require personnel like PETs . PD Yoga specialists and experts in Aerobics can choose them

after an Interview. Most of the fitness centres and Gym prefer to come and pick students of YMCA College of the Physical Education because of the Name and the fame this has developed for the past few years of time 39. Development program for non-teaching staff The non teaching staffs are motivated to under go development programs and to increase their work capacity by writing Departmental Exams and learning other software program. All the non teaching have completed their Tally program which could help them well in managing the financial resources 40. Good practices of the institution a) Leadership Training Camp Camping is an outdoor life experience that can promote leadership qualities and character building for easier adjustment. Students of B.P.Ed., BMS, BPE, III year & DPEd II year participated in Leadership Training Camp at Yelagiri between 22nd to 27th November 2010. They experienced great fun in the glorious Yelagiri hills. b) Project Sports Meets MODEL/ PROJECT SPORTS MEET The main aim of the Project Sports Meet is Learning by doing. It is mandatory to all the outgoing class to organize a Project Sports Meet and to learn the officiating techniques practically. They also extend the knowledge of organizing a standard Sports Meet and to gain practical experience.

Chief Guest Mr.Raja, Indian Bank Manager (Former Hockey Player) inaugurated the meet and Mr.Ravichandran, State Bank Manager (former Hockey Player) presided over the closing function. Mr.Rajan, Athletic Coach inaugurated the meet and Mr.Tulasi, ICF Football Coach presided over the closing function. Mr.Manohar Sam, Financial Administrator, YMCA College inaugurated the meet and Mr.Thirugnanadurai, Southern Railways presided over the closing function.

Model Meet was organized by MPED I year students on 6th August 2010. Dr.Prasanna Kumar was the morning Chief Guest and Mr.Kanthalene from State Bank of India was the Chief Guest for the valedictory function BMS students had their Inter class Adapted Voleyball and Adapted Voll Football tournaments on March 10th 2010. Mr.Koshy Alexander, Campus Administrator inaugurated the match and Mr.J.S.Jeyakardoss, Correspondent & Secretary distributed the prizes in the evening. Later, a special music programme was conducted by the St.Louis School for the Blind on the same day.

BPE II year students organized Phonenix 2K11 Inter Class Tournaments on 17th February 2011. Dr.M.S.Nagarajan, Sports Director, Special Olympics inaugurated the tournament, and Mr.R.Babu Rajendran, Handball Coach, SDAT distributed the prizes at the valedictory function. G.Winsely, R.Udhaya Kumar & K.Meenakshi Sundaram, M.Phil scholars participated in the National Workshop organized by Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University on Track & Field, Planning, Construction, Rules and Interpretations on 24th & 25th January 2011. UGC SPONSORED PROGRAMMES The following are the special events at the college supported by UGC. 1. Veta English Speaking Course 2. Guidance and Counseling Programme 3. Professional Preparation SLET/NET 4. Stipend for Marginalized students 5. Formation of Resource Centre 6. Submitted of proposal for Career Oriented Programmes SOFT SKILL PROGRAMME Students of BPE I and D.P.Ed. I year attended the Soft skill training programme conducted by G.V.K. Academy from 22nd to 25th November 2010. This was meant to develop their communication skills and leadership qualities. Teaching Practice: Students of B.P.Ed., BPE II year, D.P.Ed II year and BMS went for the Intensive Teaching Practice to 75 city schools from 24th Jan to 11th Feb.11 to gain practical experience in handling classes. Staff members visited and graded them according to their teaching abilities.

We have at present included the practice teaching also Intensive Coaching Learning for the master degree students SPECIAL PROGRAMME a) Adventure Sports Students participate in Adventure Sports as part of their optional courses. b) Quiz Competition Inter-class quiz competition was organized on 19th March 2011 specifically for the college students. BPE first year students won the trophy with their excellent performance and MPED second years were the runners up. This was coordinated by Dr. Glady Kirubakar, Lecturer.

(from YMCA College of Physical Education through CIT Nagar School Road and reached YMCA College via Nandanam signal).

i) Torch Exchange Run As a part of 90th year celebrations, Torch Exchange Run, was organized on 25th October 2010. The run was initiated by Mr.W.I. Devaram I.P.S. (Retd)., at 6.30 a.m. at our College campus. Dr. K. Vaidyanathan, Vice Chancellor of Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University, lit the torch for the relay. To commemorate the founders of the white cane (a mobility aid for the visually challenged people), our college organized World White Cane Day Rally on 15th October 2009 at 10.30 A.M. With 60 visually challenged people (Men & Women), white canes were distributed by the college and they honoured the day with a short rally. Students supportive programme Students are supported well with library resources with added books. UGC has provided (INFLIB CENTRE) Information and Library Network Centre, to our college, in which a scheme called (N-LIST) National Library and Information Sciences Infrastructure for Scholarly Content funded by MHRD (ministry of Human Resource Development) provides access to e resources (e journals 10,000, e books- 51,000). INFLIBNET facility is provided at the library. Adequate student welfare measures were taken by providing counseling services, health services and placement service. The campus interview is conducted by the Placement Cell Coordinator Dr.Glory Darling during April. At present, nearly 50 students are placed at various institutions.

Educational tour students enjoyed the educational tour to Delhi & Hyderabad which made them relaxes their mind. They felt very happy. 4. Interclass competitions 5. Project meets 6. Talent nights 7. Various Students Association function s Consultancy services were rendered by Dr.Kannan Pugazhendhi in Sports Injury Management. Dr.Jothi, in, Women fitness and Exercise therapy for the disabled.

The following Guest lecturers are invited to share their knowledge & experience. 1. Prof. E. James Daniel, Member of Board of Management, Mr.Fernando Ondarza, Dy.President, World Alliance, Mr.Baskaran, Olympian Earn while you learn Learn and earn scheme is encouraged to support the for students. Student work as officials, personal trainers, event managers and sports organizers during holidays to earn money and to enrich the professional experience. Our college extended the consultancy services to Government School for the blind, Poonamallee, and for the students of Diploma in Teaching for the Blind. Mr.S.Johnson Premkumar, being trained in O & M & Adapted Physical Education, served as consultant. Students attended the virtual inauguration of Tamilnadu Physical Education & Sports University on 25th Feb.2011.

41. Linkages developed with National/ International, academic/research bodies The college has made and MoU with the international bodies like Worcester University, London and the Springfield college of physical education. The local bodies ,say all the Associations could help the college in a way that could improve the quality of all the programs run at the college . There are around 31 students who have gone for higher studies to other international Universities and one student is currently doing Ph.D at the Springfield college ,USA .Apart from this there are lot of interaction with the foreign universities where student from other universities visit our college for the community program and so on .This had happened from s Germany and France 42. Action Taken Report on the AQAR of the previous year The report is reviewed periodically by the management and the principal and necessary steps are taken to overcome the barriers which curb the progress of the students in their development in both theory and practical .
