Hornets Top Stone

Nine Players Ejected Following on Court Scuffle Early in Game
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Seven minutes, nine players. Just seven minutes into Great Mills home match-up against Thomas Stone on Friday, a bench-clearing brawl broke out on the court leading to the ejection of nine players. The fight erupted when Hornet guard Darien Thornton and Stones Malcom White got tangled up and began a shoving match. One player took a swing at the other, and both benches quickly ran to the action, which poured over the edge of the court by the bleachers. The fight lasted less than a minute, as police stormed the court to pull players apart from each other. Five Stone players and four Great Mills players were immediately ejected and taken off school property. After the altercation, police conversed with coaches from both sides as well as Great Mills athletic director Brenda Henley. They eventually escorted all fans out of the gym, announcing that the game was over. An hour later, though, with the gym empty of everyone but cheerleaders, media, referees, and the remaining players, the game resumed. We talked with the coaches and they thought we could play the game, Henley said. So we tried to give them a safe environment to do that. I thought that the staff of Great Mills did a fantastic job [handling the situation], Hornet head coach Frank Pack said. I thought Thomas Stones coaching staff and whoever they had here was fantastic. Its a credit to both schools to kind of go through See Fight page B-2

Mustangs Knock Knights off Horse

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Rykens nine-point lead in the third quarter against visiting Bishop McNamara quickly slipped away in the final minutes of Tuesday nights game, as they fell 59-54 in conference action. Theyre a good team, Ryken head coach Danny Sancomb said of McNamara. They executed a little bit better than we did down the stretch and they made some big shots. The Mustangs outscored Ryken 25-13 in a fourth quarter surge that gave them the lead for good. The loss was a tough one to swallow for the Knights, especially after their comeback halfway through the game put them in position to win. Were definitely frustrated right now, guard R.J. Buck said. It was real quiet in the locker room. The Knights fell behind early in the game, and were down by as much as 11 in the second quarter. A rebound and a two-handed dunk by forward Jon Taylor ended the half on a high note for Ryken, as they went into the locker room down six. I was just trying to come out and play hard, try to rebound, try and get my team back in the game, Taylor said. I was just trying to bring energy to the game. Taylor scored five points and pulled down five boards for the Knights. Center John Flowers also had a big night for Ryken in the paint, scoring 14 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. His performance helped the Knights pull off a 19-6 run in the third quarter, which gave them the advantage heading into the final quarter of play. Point guard Julius Brown had a good third quarter as well, scoring seven of his 19 See Knights page B-3

Lady Seahawks Lose Close Rivalry Game

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Lady Seahawks of St. Marys College put up a battle in a home rivalry game against Salisbury University on Saturday, but came up short in the final minutes, losing 84-80 in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action. Freshman Stephanie Saint Aubin powered the Seahawks with her season-high 24-point performance, but Salisburys perimeter shooting was the difference in the game. Forward Jessica Mills and guard Meghan Phillips led the way for Salisbury, combining for 50 points, over half of which came from the threepoint line. You cant really stop that, Saint-Aubin said. I mean, we could have gotten out on them faster and put a hand in their face when they were shooting. I think we had a few slight lapses in communication. We dont have the luxury of having lapses for that long, Saint Marys head coach Nan Hambrose added. Mills was on fire, and we didnt get out of our zone quickly enough. They got us from the arc early. Salisbury took advantage of those lapses. In the first half, the Seagulls went on a 20-11 run to take their first See Rivalry page B-2

At 9 p.m., the game recommenced, with the Hornets leading 14-12 in the last minute of the first quarter. With two starting players ejected, the Hornets had to look to their bench to pull them through. Guard Sid Ridley was their man, as he came into the game to score 15 points. Cody Kohn played his role by dropping 16 points, while center Trae Jacobs chipped in 14. The Hornets charged to a 14-point lead at halftime and didnt look back. I knew that we were going to lose a couple players, so I had to step up, Ridley said. My role is not always to score 20 in a night, but I just come in and try to do my thing, try to score points for my team. Peck was also pleased with his benchs performance. They fought back from a 31-17 deficit midway through the first half and sparked a 21-9 run that cut the lead to two going into the break. Irmer led the Seahawks with 15 points in the first half and finished the game with 20. Salisbury guard Ray Williams kept the Seagulls in the game with his 31 points. He knocked down seven threes and shot 50 percent in the game. But in the last minute, the Seahawks made clutch shots and defensive stops. We had a team meeting this morning to talk about some concerns, and defense was the number one thing we talked about, point guard Mike Smelkinson said. We wanted to play hard every possession and not take any possessions off, and thats what we did today. Guard Tyson Lesesne, who scored 16 points on the night, found Calvin Wise open under the basket for two points, which tied the game up. The Seahawks then forced Williams to turn the ball over on a pass that sailed out of bounds. With time ticking off the shot clock, and 26 seconds left in the game, Smelkinson buried a three-pointer to give St. Marys the lead. SMAC standings and sit only behind Lackey for first place. For Great Mills, winning the SMAC championship is a goal they set early this season, and beating Stone only brings them closer to accomplishing that goal, Kohn said. Were even with the top teams, Peck added. We have to make sure that we take each game from here on out one at a time and not get overconfident so that we can still control our season. The Hornets played Stone with far more intensity than the first time they faced the Cougars, Kohn said. Theyre a great game. We played a great team, he added. We just came out and played all four quarters. Last time we played them, we quit in the second half. [Tonight] we kept playing two halves. You play two halves pretty good, youre going to win a game. Our intensity was just amazing, Ridley said. Even though we lost three of our players, four of our players, it was just still amazing how we had our intensity We just came in and shut it down. Peck was concerned that his team would come out flat after the one-hour break, but

ultimately, the delay helped the Hornets refocus their energy. I was beginning to be a little worried about how long it was, he said. But I think in hindsight, it kind of helped us. We were able to process the incident, talk about that, and refocus on basketball and come out with intensity. The Hornets improve to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in SMAC, and have beaten two previously undefeated conference teams in a row. While the wins boost the Hornets in the standings, they will most likely play without starters Will Smith and Thornton in their upcoming games. Once we figure out by rule what punishments have to be implemented, then on top of that, there will be some type of disciplinary action from my part, Peck said. Its a shame. Its a huge shame that you have fans that wanted to see [the game], [and] parents who wanted to see the game. I thought we were playing well. Im satisfied with the victory, Im just a little disappointed that as a basketball family and basketball team, we werent all together to do it.

Continued from page B-1 swim workouts each day, the team ran, did ab workouts, pushups, and competed in an annual ocean swim with 350 other competitors. The trip left the team tired, but Seahawks swimmers still had some of the best performances of the day against Mary Washington. Sophomore Brie McDowell crushed two school records in leading the womens team. Her time of 2:12.81 in the 200 IM broke her own previous record by almost two seconds in that event. She then broke an eight-year old school record in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:34.28. The previous school record was more than four seconds slower. McDowell piled up 18 points with her wins in those two events. She has already qualified for Division III Nationals, Barbins said of McDowell. The last goal remaining is to be ready for conference championships and then refocus on getting ready for nationals. The Eagles claimed seven of 11 events on the mens side and cruised to their fourth consecutive CAC victory. Despite the loss, Saint Marys had several promising performances from some young swimmers. Sophomore Joey Quase won the 1,000 freestyle in a time of 10:53.17. He wasnt on the team first semester, Barbins said of Quase. Now hes now back on the team and he was able to win the 1,000, so its just good to get some pieces back and get ready for the late-season push for the conference championships. The 400-medley relay team comprised of Brandon Eads, Samuel Fleming, Michael Kerr, and Robert Wiley defeated the Eagles by more than six seconds. Just coming off the training trip, it was good to see that our guys were able to swim well, Barbins said.

Momentum swung again in the beginning of the second half, as the Seahawks mounted a 19-6 run and momentarily took control of the lead. We pushed the ball and had the opportunity to get a lot of layups, Hambrose said. The Seahawks second half run was capped by guard Kiely Murphys back-to-back three-pointers. With more than six minutes to play, Seagull shooters made their presence felt by knocking down threes and building a 13-point lead. Along with Saint-Aubins 24-point and five steal performance, guard Megan Uglik contributed 16 points and eight rebounds, while Murphy came off the bench to add 12 points and nine rebounds. Weve got to keep it going, keep it rolling, and take it one game at a time. Its a new season, Harney added.

While the Seahawks have endured some ups and downs this year, Harney will continue to pass along Flynns optimistic advice to his players, and with that, he hopes they will be able to get through the toughest of times. I try to tell them that no matter how bad it gets, just keep your head up, Harney said. Its not about how hard you fall, youve just got to get up and keep going.

The Game Must Go On
of waiting, and the ejection of nine players (five from Stone and four from Great Mills), the game was played out with no further quarrels. Many fans were unhappy as they left the gym, feeling that the decision made to clear them out was unfair. While I understand the sentiment of these hundreds of fans, who wanted to see the outcome of this close and exciting game between two top teams in SMAC, I believe the situation was handled well and the right choice was made. The game was only seven minutes old when the fight broke out, and three full quarters remained. With that much time left, there is no telling how much the tension between remaining players could have escalated, especially with added pressure from fans. But the one-hour break allowed the players who were left to regain their composure and put the fight behind them. I think that my team has a tendency to play, at times, to the crowd, said Great Mills head coach Frank Peck. After the fans were out of here, I thought that the players I had on the bench all focused on one thing: basketball. Not putting on a show, nothing else. They concentrated on basketball. Finishing the game after the break allowed for a safe and peaceful resolution. Canceling or postponing the event would have left things on a sour note for both teams. Now, Great Mills and Thomas Stone will not have to face each other again for the rest of the season (unless they meet in the playoffs). If they do happen to meet in the playoffs - which will not be until late February or early March - both schools will be fully prepared to make the game safe for players and fans to enjoy. Of course, it is important that the players involved in the fight face appropriate disciplinary action. There is no room for fighting in a high school basketball game, and the schools and staff, Im sure, will make that clear when punishing those involved in the fight. In her 13 years as athletic director of Great Mills High School, Brenda Henley says she has never seen a fight break out in a basketball game. Her goal, and that of the school and coaches, is to never let it happen again.

Shooting guard Janko Kajtez was the third highest scorer for the Knights with 12 points, and also helping build the third quarter lead was guard R.J. Buck, who pulled down four rebounds, but more importantly, took two charges at critical moments in the game. R.J. Buck is a very good player, Sancomb said. He does everything very well. He rebounds well, he handles the ball well, he shoots well, de-

fends well, and he sacrifices his body. He plays with a lot of heart. The intensity that the Knights played with in the third quarter did not roll over into the fourth, Sancomb said. I dont think in the fourth quarter we defended like we did in the third quarter, he added. I think we gave them open looks, which we didnt in the third quarter. If you give anybody in our league open looks, theyre going to knock them down. According to Sancomb, fatigue started to set in for his players late in the game. We were a little bit flat, a little bit frustrated, a little bit tired, he said. We played four times last week and this week its wearing off. I think our legs were a little bit tired at the end of the game. The Knights stayed within range to win the game, but were unable to close the gap in the final minutes of play. Its frustrating, but weve just got to bounce back and

get ready for St. Johns, Taylor said. The Knights will return to the court tomorrow to play St. Johns at home. Players rested yesterday to freshen up for that game, Sancomb said. Weve got to take it one game at a time, he added. Were not even looking at the playoffs right now. Were focusing on Friday versus St. Johns, and then weve got to get ready for [Bishop] OConnell after that. While Ryken has suffered some heartbreaking losses this season, they will learn from their experiences and benefit from them in the end, according to Buck. All these games that were having right now, these tough losses that were taking, these bumps in the road, I think theyre going to end up helping us at the end of the season in the playoffs, he said. Were a good team, added Sancomb. If we play our brand of basketball, well beat anybody.

The 2007 Toyota Camry

By Jesse Stump Contributing Writer I still remember that feeling the first time I tromped on the gas in my Ford Thunderbird. I was 16 years old, and the impracticality of a supercharged V-6 was the furthest thing from my mind. Im older now and no longer have access to my parents gas card, so I drive a Honda Accord that is, well practical. Regardless, when I first heard that Americas best selling car, The Toyota Camry, had strapped on the 268hp VVT-i engine of its older brother the Avalon, I was 16 again. Walk Around The Camry receives an edgy face lift for 2007 that is an impressive departure from its conservative roots. Wheel size is increased by an inch from last year with 16 being the standard for CE, LE, XLE, and Hybrid models while the sportier SE dons 17 alloys and low profile tires. The SE also features a small trunk-lid spoiler, a honeycomb grill and ground effects. I test-drove a fully loaded SE in Blue Ribbon Metallic and the term grocery-getter never crossed my mind. Interior Upon opening the driver-side door, my eyes were immediately drawn to the perforated black leather seats and wrapped steering wheel offered with the sport leather package. The seats are firm but comfortable throughout and there is ample legroom in the rear even for a 6 occupant. An in-dash Navigation System is available and is either XM or Sirius Satellite Radio ready if youre willing to pony up the monthly subscription fee. The large navigation touch screen is easily controlled and provides a sharp and brilliant picture. The optional JBL premium sound system does

the job, though its dimly lit in-dash buttons are somewhat difficult to see at night. Test Drive With a turn of the key, the Camrys 3.5 liter V-6 rumbled to life and settled at a low throaty hum. Leaving the parking lot I leaned into the pedal and was impressed with the fluid acceleration provided by the SEs standard 6-speed ECT-i automatic transmission and with the ease at which the car propelled passed the posted speed limit. The ride is firm yet comfortable and the Camry handles itself well along windy roads and over bumpy terrain. The transmission does hesitate at times when a quick downshift is necessary, making the manual shift feature an appealing alternative if youre late for work. Overall The 2007 Toyota Camry was recently voted the Motor Trend Car of the Year and for good reason. The redesigned Camry makes a bold statement with its contemporary look and spirited power plant. The Camry has been success-

ful in the mid-size sedan market for nearly a decade now, and I feel that Toyotas continual effort to keep up with the times will ensure the Camrys success for years to come. Specs: 2007 Toyota Camry SE
