WARNING LIGHTS
A permanently lit warning light or one flashing, with the engine running, indicates an operating fault of the unit concerned. The illumination of certain warning lights may be accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display. Do not ignore this warning: consult a PEUGEOT dealer. If the central STOP warning light comes on when you are driving, stop your vehicle immediately, where it is safe to do so.

Engine oil pressure and temperature warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. Linked to the central STOP warning light. If this warning light comes on, with the engine running, it indicates one of the following: - insufficient oil pressure, - a lack of oil in the lubrication circuit. Top up the level, - an oil temperature which is too high. The warning light is acompanied by an audible signal. To lower the oil temperature, reduce your speed. You must stop. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Low coolant level warning light* (Diesel)

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. Linked to the central STOP warning light. Wait for the engine to cool before topping up the level. The cooling circuit is pressurised. In the event of breakdown and to prevent any risk of burns, unscrew the cap by two turns to allow the pressure to drop. When the pressure has dropped, remove the cap and top up the level. You must stop. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Central STOP warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. Linked to the warning lights: - ''engine oil pressure and temperature'', - ''low coolant level*'', - "maximum coolant temperature", - 'handbrake'', ''low brake fluid level'', and ''electronic brake force distribution''. You must stop if the light comes on with the engine running. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Maximum coolant temperature warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. Linked to the central STOP warning light. If this warning light comes on, with the engine running, it indicates an abnormal increase in the temperature of the coolant. You must stop. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Handbrake, low brake fluid level and Electronic Brake Force Distribution warning light
This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. Linked to the central STOP warning light. If this warning light comes on, with the engine running, it indicates one of the following: - that the handbrake is applied or not fully released, if the vehicle is moving, - an excessive drop in brake fluid level (if the warning light remains on even when the handbrake is released), - a fault in the Electronic Brake Force Distribution. You must stop. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Anti-lock braking system (ABS) warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. If the warning light remains on or comes on above 8 mph (12 km/h), this indicates an ABS malfunction. However, the vehicle retains conventional servo-assisted braking. Lighting of this warning light, accompanied by an audible signal, indicates an ABS fault. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Battery charge warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. If it comes on, with the engine running, it indicates one of the following: - faulty operation of the charging circuit, - slack battery or starter terminals, - a cut or slack alternator belt, - an alternator failure. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Electronic stability control system (ESP/ASR) warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. While the engine is running and the vehicle is moving, it flashes if the system is activated. It comes on permanently when it is disarmed.

Emission control system warning light

This comes on each time the ignition is switched on and remains on until the engine is started. If it comes on, with the engine running, it indicates a fault in the injection, ignition or emission control system. There is a risk of damage to the catalytic converter (petrol engine only). Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Seat belt not fastened warning light

When the ignition is switched on, this indicator light comes on if the driver (and/or a passenger) has not fastened his seat belt. Above 12 mph (20 kmh), this warning light flashes for two minutes accompanied by an audible signal which becomes progressively louder. Once the two minutes have elapsed, the warning light remains on until the driver (and/or the passenger) fastens his seat belt.

Front, steering column, side and curtain air bags warning light
This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. With the engine running, illumination of this warning light, accompanied by an audible signal, indicates a fault in the front, side or curtain air bags. Consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

Low fuel level warning light

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. When this light first comes on, you have enough fuel to drive approximately 30 miles (50 km) (The tank capacity is approximately 40 litres).

Passenger air bag disarmed warning light**

This comes on for a few seconds each time the ignition is switched on. If the passenger air bag is disarmed, the warning light remains on. Always consult a PEUGEOT dealer if the warning light flashes.

Engine oil level indicator
When the ignition is switched on, the engine oil level is indicated for approximately 5 seconds.

INSTRUMENT PANEL DISPLAY

After switching on the ignition, three functions are shown in succession: - engine oil level indicator, - service indicator, - total distance recorder (total and trip distances). Note: the total and trip distances are displayed for thirty seconds, when the ignition is switched off, on opening and closing the driver's door as well as on locking the vehicle. It also displays the "2 Tronic" gearbox positions and operating modes selected. If your vehicle is fitted with the monochrome screen A, this displays the trip computer data.

Oil level gauge fault Check the oil level using the dipstick. If the level is correct, the flashing indicates an actual malfunction of the engine oil level gauge. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer. Lack of oil Flashing indicates a lack of oil which could damage the engine. If the lack of oil is confirmed by a check using the dipstick, it is essential that the level is topped up. The level read on the dipstick will only be correct if the vehicle is on level ground and the engine has been off for more than 15 minutes.

Service indicator
This indicates when the next service is due in accordance with the manufacturer's servicing schedule. The point at which the next service is due is calculated from the last indicator zero reset. It is determined by two parameters: - the distance travelled, - the time which has elapsed since the last service. Note: the distance remaining before the next service may be weighted by the time factor, depending on the user's driving habits. 10 seconds after the ignition was switched on, the distance recorder resumes its normal operation and the display indicates the total or trip distance or the last trip computer information displayed before the ignition was switched off. The distance remaining to the next service is less than 500 miles/1,000 km. Example: 400 miles/900 km remain before the next service. For 5 seconds after the engine oil level, the indicator displays: The service is overdue. The service spanner flashes for 5 seconds after each engine oil level. Example: the service is overdue by 300 miles/km, your vehicle must be serviced as soon as possible. For 5 seconds after the engine oil level, the display indicates:

Operation For 5 seconds after the engine oil level indication, the spanner symbolising the servicing operations comes on; the distance recorder display indicates the number of miles [kilometres] (rounded off) remaining until the next service. Example: 4,800 miles/km remain before the next service. For five seconds after the engine oil level indication, the display indicates:

10 seconds after the ignition was switched on, the distance recorder resumes its normal operation and the spanner remains lit. It indicates that a service must be carried out soon. The display indicates the total or trip distance.

10 seconds after the ignition was switched on, the distance recorder resumes its normal operation and the service spanner remains lit. The display indicates the total or trip distance. Note: the service spanner may also come on if more than two years have elapsed since the last service.

Recommendations for use

If the interior temperature remains very high following a long period parked in the sun, do not hesitate to ventilate the passenger compartment for a few minutes. For an even air distribution, make sure that you do not block the outside air inlet grille, the vents and the air outlets to the footwells. In certain cases of particularly arduous use (towing the maximum load on a steep gradient in a high temperature), cutting off the air conditioning permits recovery of the engine power and therefore improvement of the towing capacity.

Ensure that the passenger compartment filter, located underneath the windscreen, in the engine compartment, is in good condition. Have the filter elements replaced regularly. If you drive in a dusty environment, change them twice as often. Operate the air conditioning system for 5 to 10 minutes, once or twice a month, to keep it in perfect working order. To guarantee correct operation of your air conditioning system, we also recommend that you have it checked regularly. The condensation created by the air conditioning results in a flow of water underneath the vehicle when stationary which is perfectly normal. If the system does not produce cold air, do not use it and contact your PEUGEOT dealer. Do not cover the temperature sensor 7, it is used for regulation of the air conditioning.

The air conditioning system does not contain chlorine and does not present any danger to the ozone layer. 01-10-2005

GENERAL POINTS RELATING TO CHILD SEATS
Although one of PEUGEOT's main criteria when designing your vehicle, the safety of your children also depends on you. For maximum safety, please follow these precautions:

INSTALLING A CHILD SEAT USING A THREE POINT SEAT BELT

"Rearwards-facing" When a "rearwards-facing" child seat is installed on the front passenger seat, it is essential that the passenger air bag** is disarmed. Otherwise, the child would risk being seriously injured or killed if the air bag were to inflate. "Forwards-facing" When a "forwards-facing" child seat is installed on the front passenger seat, adjust the vehicle's seat to the intermediate longitudinal position with the seat back upright and leave the passenger air bag armed**.

- since 1992, and in accordance with Directive 2000/3, all children under the age of 12 must travel in approved child seats* suited to their weight, on seats fitted with a seat belt or ISOFIX mountings**, - statistically, the safest seats in your vehicle for the transportation of children are the rear seats, - a child weighing less than 9 kg must travel in the "rearwardsfacing" position both in the front and in the rear. PEUGEOT recommends that children should travel in the rear seats of your vehicle: - "rearwards-facing" up to the age of 2, - "forwards-facing" over the age of 2.

INSTALLING CHILD SEATS SECURED USING THE SEAT BELT
In accordance with the European regulation (Directive 2000/3), this table indicates the options for the installation of child seats secured using the seat belt and universally approved in accordance with the weight of the child and the seat in the vehicle.

ADVICE ON CHILD SEATS
The incorrect installation of a child seat in a vehicle compromises the child's protection in the event of an accident. Remember to fasten the seat belts or the child seat harnesses keeping the slack in relation to the child's body to a minimum, even for short journeys. For optimum installation of the "forward facing" child seat, ensure that the back of the child seat is in contact with the back of the vehicle's seat and that the head restraint does not cause any discomfort. If the head restraint has to be removed, ensure that it is stored or attached securely to prevent it from being thrown around the vehicle in the event of sharp braking. Children under the age of 10 must not travel in the "forward facing" position on the front passenger seat, unless the rear seats are already occupied by other children, cannot be used or are absent. Disarm the passenger air bag* when a "rear facing" child seat is installed on the front seat. Otherwise, the child would risk being seriously injured or killed if the air bag were to inflate. As a safety precaution, do not leave: - one or more children alone and unsupervised in a vehicle, - a child or an animal in a vehicle which is exposed to the sun, with the windows closed, - the keys within reach of children inside the vehicle. To prevent accidental opening of the doors, use the "Child lock"*. Take care not to open the rear windows by more than one third*. To protect young children from the rays of the sun, fit side blinds on the rear windows.

Installing a booster seat The chest part of the seat belt must be positioned on the child's shoulder without touching the neck. Ensure that the lap part of the seat belt passes correctly over the child's thighs. PEUGEOT recommends the use of a booster seat which has a back, fitted with a seat belt guide at shoulder level.

To replace the battery, unclip the casing using a coin at the ring. If the remote control does not work after the battery has been changed, re- programme the remote control.

ELECTRONIC ENGINE IMMOBILISER

This locks the engine management system as soon as the ignition has been switched off and therefore prevents starting of the vehicle by anyone who does not have the key. The ignition key has an electronic chip which has a special code. When the ignition is switched on, the code is recognised and starting is possible. If the system does not function correctly, contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

Do not discard the remote control batteries, they contain metals which are harmful to the environment. Take them to a PEUGEOT dealership, or to any other approved collection point. 01-10-2005

Make a careful note of the number on each key. The key number is coded on the label attached to the key. If the keys are lost, your PEUGEOT dealer can rapidly supply you with new keys. The high frequency remote control is a sensitive system; do not operate it while it is in your pocket as there is a possibility that it may unlock your vehicle, without you being aware of it. The remote control does not operate when the key is in the ignition, even when the ignition is switched off, except for reprogramming. Do not operate the deadlocking function if there is anyone inside the vehicle. Driving with the doors locked may make access to the passenger compartment by the emergency services more difficult in an emergency. As a safety precaution (with children on board), remove the ignition key when you leave the vehicle, even for a short time. Do not repeatedly press the button of your remote control out of range and out of sight of your vehicle. You run the risk of stopping it from working and the remote control would have to be reprogrammed. When purchasing a second-hand vehicle; - ensure that you are given the confidential card; - have the key codes memorised by a PEUGEOT dealer, to ensure that the keys in your possession are the only ones which can start the vehicle. Do not make any modifications to the electronic engine immobiliser system.

CONFIDENTIAL CARD
This is given to you on delivery of your vehicle with the duplicate keys. It contains the identification code necessary for any work carried out by a PEUGEOT dealer on the electronic immobiliser system. This code is hidden by a film, which should be removed only if necessary. Keep your card in a safe place, never inside the vehicle. When undertaking a long trip or journey, however, it is advisable to take it with you along with your personal papers.

General recommendations
Always check that it is safe to operate the door and be sure, in particular, not to leave children or animals near the door controls without supervision. When opening the door, with the window open, ensure that no person, animal or object is hanging through the window. Before any opening or closing and during any movement of the doors, ensure that no person, animal or object is preventing the required manoeuvre, either inside or outside the vehicle. It is imperative that the doors are operated only when the vehicle is stationary. For your safety and for that of your passengers, you are strongly advised not to drive with a door open. The flashing of the courtesy light + audible warning + "door open" message are there to remind you. Lock your vehicle when using an automatic carwash.

The doors and the overall dimensions of the vehicle

Safety/Obstacle detection
When open, a door exceeds the width of the exterior mirror by 8 mm, be sure to take this into account when you park alongside a wall, a post or a high kerb... The obstacle detection system is triggered when an obstacle of a certain physical resistance hinders the movement of the door. If an obstacle is detected while the door is closing, the door stops then opens fully. If an obstacle is detected while the door is opening, the door stops. When you have removed the obstacle, complete or restart the action using buttons C or D on the remote control or the switches B.

When open, a door never protrudes beyond the rear bumper. 01-10-2005

Before any opening or closing and during any movement of the doors, ensure that no person, animal or object is preventing the required manoeuvre, either inside or outside the vehicle. If this advice is not followed, injuries or damage may occur if a part of the body or an object is trapped or caught. Electric closing and opening of the doors is not possible above 3 mph (5 km/h): If you set off with the door(s) open, you must slow down to below the threshold of 3 mph (5 km/h) in order to close the door(s). Any attempt to open a door electrically using the interior handle, while driving, results in the door opening partially and, as a safety measure, locking in this position immediately. Flashing of the courtesy light + audible warning + "door open" message accompany this situation. In order to release the door and be able to operate it again, you must slow down to below the threshold of 3 mph (5 km/h) again. In the case of a steep slope, the door may be driven by its own weight and as a consequence may open or close sharply. Therefore: There would not be time for operation of one of the electric controls to be taken into account. There would not be time for the obstacle detection system to be triggered. Take care not to leave the vehicle on a steep slope with the door(s) open without supervision. If this advice is not followed, injuries or damage may occur if a part of the body or an object is trapped or caught.

However, if your vehicle is on a slope, with the front of the vehicle facing up, open the door with care. The door may open more quickly due to the incline of the ground.

In the event of an impact

The electric controls are deactivated in the event of an impact. Manual opening and closing is still possible.

Special features of operation

With the ignition off, doors open, power consuming equipment on (radio, lights), or doors in an intermediate position (door neither fully open nor fully closed). After 30 minutes, the vehicle automatically switches to energy economy mode.

Behaviour in the case of a steep slope

It is possible to open and close the doors electrically up to a gradient of 20 %.

However, if your vehicle is on a slope, with the front of the vehicle facing down, the door may not stay open and may close again sharply with the risk of injury.

In this case, or following reconnection of the battery, with the doors open, it may be necessary to close the doors manually, in order to reinitialise them, and start the engine. When the door has stopped in an intermediate position (neither fully open nor fully closed), only the remote control or the switches permit electric operation of the door. When closing requests are made when the door is in a partially open position, the door may open slightly before closing. When closing a door electrically when the battery is low, you are advised to guide the door manually. Recharge the battery as soon as possible. If the electric controls (remote control or switches) no longer operate, reinitialise the doors(s) as follows: 1. Start the engine. 2. Manually open the door(s) fully. 3. Close the door(s) fully. On completion of this procedure, electric operation of the doors is restored. However, if a problem persists following this procedure, contact a PEUGEOT dealer. "Tailgate open" warning With the engine running, an audible signal and a diagram or a message displayed briefly on the multi-function screen warn you that the tailgate is not properly closed.

Each part has an independent manual shutter. The sunroof is controlled electrically by a dial with 9 opening positions.

To open: turn the dial to the left (nine possible settings). Once the roof is open, the front shutter cannot be closed. To close: return the control to the initial position "O".

Safety auto-reverse When the roof meets an obstacle while closing, it partially opens again.

Always remove the ignition key when leaving the vehicle, even for a short time. In the event of contact during operation of the roof, the movement of the roof must be reversed. To do this, operate the control concerned. When the driver operates the roof control, he must ensure that no one is preventing the roof from closing correctly. The driver must ensure that the passengers use the sunroof correctly. Be aware of children when operating the roof. Check that the slides are clean to ensure that the sunroof slides correctly.

Automatic lighting of hazard warning lights

When braking in an emergency, depending on the force of deceleration, the hazard warning lights come on automatically. They switch off automatically the first time you accelerate. It is also possible to switch them off by pressing the button on the fascia.

01-10-2005

Safety - 133
ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS) AND THE ELECTRONIC BRAKE FORCE DISTRIBUTION (EBFD)
The ABS, in conjunction with the electronic brake force distribution, increases the stability and manoeuvrability of your vehicle on braking, in particular on poor or slippery road surfaces. Note: when changing wheels (tyres and rims), make sure that these are approved. The anti-lock braking system comes into operation automatically when there is a risk of wheel lock. Stop immediately. In both cases, consult a PEUGEOT dealer.

EMERGENCY BRAKING ASSISTANCE SYSTEM

In an emergency, this system enables the optimum braking pressure to be reached more quickly, thus reducing the stopping distance. It is triggered by the speed at which the brake pedal is activated. The effect of this is a reduction in the resistance of the pedal and an increase in braking efficiency.

Normal operation of the ABS may make itself felt by slight vibrations of the brake pedal.

In emergency braking, press very firmly without releasing the pressure.

When this warning light comes on, accompanied by a buzzer and a message, it indicates that there is a malfunction of the ABS, which can cause a loss of control of the vehicle when braking.

When this warning light comes on, connected to the STOP warning light, accompanied by a buzzer and a message, it indicates that there is a malfunction of the electronic brake force distribution, which can cause a loss of control of the vehicle when braking. 01-10-2005

134 - Safety
TRACTION CONTROL (ASR) AND DYNAMIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESP)
These systems are linked and complement the ABS. The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, by acting on the brakes of the drive wheels and on the engine. It also allows the directional stability of the vehicle to be improved on acceleration. If there is a variation between the trajectory followed by the vehicle and that required by the driver, the ESP system automatically acts on the engine and the brake of one or more wheels, in order to put the vehicle back on course, within the limits of the laws of physics. Operating check When a malfunction of the systems occurs, the warning light comes on, accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the systems checked.

Operation of the ASR and ESP systems The warning light flashes if the ASR or ESP is activated.

Disarming In exceptional conditions (starting a vehicle which is bogged down, stuck in snow, on soft ground, ...), it may be advisable to disarm the ASR and ESP systems, so that the wheels can move freely and regain grip. F Press the "ESP OFF" switch, located on the central section of the fascia.

The switch lights up and the warning light comes on: the ASR and ESP systems are disarmed. Reactivation F Automatic if the ignition is switched off, F Automatic above 30 mph (50 km/h), F Manual by pressing the switch again.

The ESP/ASR systems offer exceptional safety in normal driving, but this should not encourage the driver to take extra risks or drive at high speed. The correct functioning of these systems depends on observation of the manufacturer's recommendations regarding the wheels (tyres and rims), the braking components, the electronic components and the PEUGEOT assembly and operation procedures. After an impact, have the systems checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.

Safety - 135
The pre-tensioning seat belts are armed when the ignition is on. The force-limiting device reduces the pressure of the seat belt against the occupant's body in the event of an accident. Seat belt not fastened warning* If the driver and/or the front passenger has not fastened his seat belt, the corresponding warning light comes on when the ignition is on, then, at a speed above 12 mph (20 km/h), this is accompanied by an audible signal the volume of which increases (for approximately two minutes) and a message on the multifunction display. Note: a bag or an animal placed on the front passenger seat may trigger lighting of the warning light. Seat belt unfastened warning* If the driver and/or one of the passengers has unfastened his seat belt, the corresponding warning light comes on when the engine is running, then, at a speed above 12 mph (20 km/h), this is accompanied by an audible signal the volume of which increases (for approximately two minutes) and a message on the multifunction display.

Additional seat belt warnings*

SEAT BELTS
Fastening the seat belts With the door closed, slide your arm along the door and take hold of the seat belt at the base. Then, insert the buckle into the stalk.

Pre-tensioning and force-limiting front seat belts Safety in the event of a frontal impact has been improved by the introduction of pre-tensioning and force-limiting front seat belts. Depending on the seriousness of the impact, the pre-tensioning system instantly tightens the seat belts firmly against the body of the occupant.

136 - Safety
Wherever you are seated in the vehicle, always fasten your seat belt, even for short journeys. Do not invert the seat belt buckles as they will not fulfil their role fully. If the seats have armrests*, the lap part of the seat belt must always pass under the armrest. Before and after use, ensure that the seat belt is rolled up correctly. Rear seat belts The rear seats are fitted with two three-point inertia reel seat belts. The retaining of the rear seat belt buckle by the sliding block makes folding down or complete folding of the seats easier. In order to be effective, a seat belt: - must be tightened as close to the body as possible, - must restrain one adult only, - must not bear any trace of cuts or fraying, - must not be twisted, - must not be transformed or modified. Clean the seat belt straps with soapy water or a textile cleaning product, sold by PEUGEOT dealers. After folding or moving a seat or rear bench seat, ensure that the seat belt is positioned and rolled up correctly. Recommendations for child seats: - use a suitable child seat if the passenger is less than 12 years old or shorter than one metre fifty, - do not use the strap-guide* when a child seat is installed. Depending on the nature and seriousness of the impacts, the pretensioning device may be triggered before and independently of the air bags. In all cases, the air bag warning light comes on. Following an impact, have the seat belts system checked, and if necessary replaced, by a PEUGEOT dealer.

Safety - 137
AIR BAGS
The air bags have been designed to maximise the safety of the occupants in the event of serious collisions. They work in conjunction with the force-limiting seat belts. The electronic detectors register and analyse any abrupt deceleration of the vehicle: if the triggering threshold is reached, the air bags inflate instantly and protect the occupants of the vehicle. Immediately after the impact, the air bags deflate rapidly so that they do not hinder the visibility of the occupants nor their exit if necessary from the vehicle. The air bags are not deployed in the case of collisions which are not serious, for which the seat belt is sufficient to ensure maximum protection. The seriousness of a collision depends on the nature of the obstacle and the speed of the vehicle at the moment of the collision. Air bags only operate when the ignition is switched on. Note: the gas escaping from the air bags can be a minor irritant.

FRONT AIR BAGS

These are folded in the centre of the steering wheel for the driver and in the fascia for the front passenger. They are deployed simultaneously, except in cases where the passenger air bag is disarmed.

Disarming the passenger air bag*

To ensure the safety of your child, it is essential to disarm the passenger air bag when you install a "rear-facing" child seat on the front passenger seat. Otherwise, the child would risk being seriously injured or killed if the air bag were to inflate. F With the ignition switched off, insert the key into the passenger air bag disarming switch 1, turn it to the "OFF" position, then remove the key keeping the slot in this position.

Front air bag fault

If this warning light comes on, accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display, contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.

138 - Safety
In the "OFF" position, the passenger air bag will not be triggered in the event of an impact. As soon as the child seat is removed, turn the air bag slot to the "ON" position to re-activate the air bag and thus ensure the safety of your passenger in the event of an impact.

SIDE AIR BAGS AND CURTAIN AIR BAGS*

The side air bags are incorporated into the front seat backs on the door side. The curtain air bags are incorporated in the headlining. They are deployed independently of each other depending on which side the collision occurs.

Disarming check With the ignition on (2nd notch), illumination of this warning light accompanied by a message on the multifunction display, indicates that the passenger air bag is disarmed (switch in the "OFF" position). The warning light on the instrument panel remains on until the passenger air bag is reactivated.

Steering column air bag*

The steering column air bag is incorporated in the fascia below the steering column. It protects the driver's lower limbs. It is deployed at the same time as the front air bags.

Operating check This indicator light comes on, accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the multi-function display to indicate the malfunction of at least one of these air bags. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to have the system checked.

In the event of permanent lighting of the two air bag warning lights, do not install a rear-facing child seat. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Safety - 139
For the front, steering column, side and curtain air bags to be fully effective, observe the following safety rules: Wear a correctly adjusted seat belt. Sit in a normal upright position. Do not leave anything between the occupants and the air bags (a child, pet, object...). This could hamper the operation of the air bags or injure the occupants. All work on the air bag system is strictly forbidden unless it is carried out by qualified personnel of the PEUGEOT network. After an accident or if the vehicle has been stolen or broken into, have the air bag systems checked. Front air bags Do not drive holding the steering wheel by its spokes or resting your hands on the centre part of the wheel. Passengers must not place their feet on the fascia. Smoke as little as possible; deployment of the air bags can cause burns or the risk of injury from a cigarette or pipe. Never remove or pierce the steering wheel or hit it violently. Side air bags Only put approved covers on the seats. Contact your PEUGEOT dealer. Do not fix or glue anything to the seat backs. This could cause injury to the chest or arms when the side air bag inflates. Do not sit with the upper part of the body any nearer to the door than necessary. Curtain air bags* Do not fix or glue anything to the roof. This could cause injury to the head when the curtain air bag inflates. Do not remove the grab handles installed on the roof, they play a part in securing the curtain air bags.

Steering column air bag* Do not sit with your knees any nearer to the steering wheel than necessary.

"2 TRONIC" GEARBOX

The five-speed controlled manual gearbox offers a choice between the comfort of automatic regulation or the pleasure of manual gear changing. This gearbox enables you to access two driving modes: - an automated mode for automatic control of the gears by the gearbox and therefore without any action on the part of the driver, - a sequential mode for manual changing of the gears by the driver using the paddles on the steering wheel or the gear lever. It consists of the following controls : - a gear lever 1 on the centre console for changing gear in sequential mode, reverse gear and neutral, - an "AUTO" button 2 on the centre console for activation or deactivation of the automated mode, - a "-" steering wheel control 3 for sequential downward gear changes, - a "+" steering wheel control 4 for sequential upward gear changes.

When the vehicle is being driven, illumination of this warning light and of the STOP warning light, accompanied by an audible signal and a message on the multifunction display, indicates that the handbrake is still on or has not been properly released. When parking on a slope, direct your wheels towards the pavement and pull the handbrake.

Gear lever positions

N : neutral. Push the lever to the right to change to neutral. R : reverse gear. With the vehicle stationary, keep your foot on the brake pedal and push the gear lever to the right then towards the rear. +/- : manual gear changing in sequential mode. Push forward to change up. Push rearward to change down.

Driving - 141
Stopping - Starting on a slope
The 2 Tronic gearbox is a controlled manual gearbox which does not have a clutch pedal. Do not use the accelerator pedal to immobilise the vehicle on a slope, apply the handbrake instead. When starting on a slope, accelerate gradually while releasing the handbrake.

Functions of the steering wheel controls

+ : manual gear changing in sequential mode. Pull the "+" steering wheel control towards you then release to change up. - : manual gear changing in sequential mode. Pull the "-" steering wheel control towards you then release to change down.

Moving off
Press the brake pedal firmly while starting the engine. Each time the engine is started, the automated mode is activated and the gearbox systematically places itself in neutral to prevent the vehicle from jumping. "AUTO" and "N" appear on the instrument panel display. Select first or reverse gear. Release the handbrake. Release the brake pedal then accelerate. "AUTO" and "1" or "R" appear on the instrument panel display. It is possible to start in 2nd gear using the gear lever, in sequential mode only.

Switching to sequential mode

Once you have moved off, you can switch to sequential mode by pressing button 2. "AUTO" disappears and the gears engaged appear in succession on the instrument panel display. The gear change requests are only carried out if the engine speed permits it. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal gently to engage the gear.

01-10-2005

142 - Driving
Switching to automated mode
Automated mode After using the sequential mode, you can return to the automated mode by pressing button 2. "AUTO" and the gear engaged appear on the instrument panel display. The gearbox then operates in autoactive mode, without any action on the part of the driver. It continuously selects the gear most suited to the following parameters: - driving style, - road characteristics, - vehicle load. To optimise driving comfort and obtain the most suitable gear, avoid sharp variations in the pressure on the accelerator pedal. Automated snow mode In the automated mode, if the gearbox detects poor grip it will automatically switch to automated snow mode. "AUTO" and "T" appear on the instrument panel display.

Operating anomaly
With the ignition on, the simultaneous flashing of the "T" and "AUTO" symbols indicates a gearbox malfunction. Contact a PEUGEOT dealer without delay.

Stopping the vehicle

Before switching off the engine, you can: - move to position N to leave the gearbox in neutral. - leave a gear engaged, such as first or reverse. In both cases, it is imperative that you apply the handbrake to immobilise the vehicle. The brake pedal must be pressed while starting the engine. Never select neutral N while the vehicle is moving. Only engage reverse gear R with the vehicle immobilised and the brake pedal pressed. In all cases, it is imperative that you apply the handbrake in order to immobilise the vehicle.

"Auto sequential" mode In the automated mode, you can resume control temporarily at any time using the paddles or the gear lever. The gearbox engages the gear requested if the engine speed permits it. "AUTO" is still displayed on the instrument panel. After a few moments, the gearbox again controls the gears automatically.

Reinitialisation
Following disconnection of the battery, the gearbox must be reinitialised: - switch on the ignition, "AUTO", "T" and "-" appear on the instrument panel display, - press the brake pedal, - wait approximately 30 seconds until "N" or a gear appears on the instrument panel display, - release the brake pedal. The gearbox is operational again.

ECONOMY MODE FUNCTION

After the engine has stopped, with the key in the accessories position, certain functions (doors, windscreen wipers, electric windows, courtesy lights, audio equipment, etc.) can only be used for a cumulative duration of thirty minutes, to prevent discharging of the battery. Once the thirty minutes are over, a message informing you of the switch to economy mode appears on the multifunction display and the active functions are put on standby. To resume the use of these functions immediately, start the engine and let it run for a few seconds.

FITTING/REMOVING THE MAT*

When removing the mat on the driver's side, push the seat as far back as possible and remove the fixings. When refitting, position the mat correctly on the pins and clip the fixings. Check that the mat is secured correctly. To prevent the mat from becoming caught under the pedals: - only use mats suited to the fixings already present in the vehicle. It is imperative that these fixings are used. - never fit one mat on top of another.

A flat battery will prevent the engine from starting.

BATTERY To charge the battery using a battery charger:
- Disconnect the battery, - Follow the instructions for use given by the battery charger manufacturer, - Reconnect starting with the negative (-) terminal, - Check that the terminals and connectors are clean. If they are covered with sulphate (white or greenish deposit), disconnect them and clean them.

To start the vehicle from another battery:

- Connect the red cable to the positive (+) terminals of the two batteries, - Connect one end of the green or black cable to the negative (-) terminal of the slave battery B, - Connect the other end of the green or black cable to an earth point C on the broken down vehicle as far as possible from the battery, - Operate the starter, let the engine run, - Wait for the engine to return to idle, then disconnect the cables. It is advisable to disconnect the battery if the vehicle is not to be used for a period of more than one month. Before disconnecting the battery, you must wait for 2 minutes after switching off the ignition. Never disconnect a terminal when the engine is running. Never charge a battery without first disconnecting the terminals. Close the windows, the sunroof and the doors before disconnecting the battery. If they do not operate normally following reconnection of the battery, they must be reinitialised (see sections "Sesame doors" and "Sunroof").

After every reconnection of the battery, switch on the ignition and wait 1 minute before starting to allow the electronic systems to be initialised. If slight difficulties are experienced after this, please contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

The batteries contain harmful substances such as sulphuric acid and lead. They must be disposed of in accordance with regulations and must never be discarded with household waste. Take used remote control and vehicle batteries to a special collection point.

RUNNING OUT OF FUEL (DIESEL)

If you should run out of fuel, it is necessary to re-prime the circuit: - fill the fuel tank with at least five litres of diesel, - squeeze and release the manual re-priming pump, under the bonnet under the protective cover, until fuel appears in the transparent pipe, - operate the starter until the engine starts.

Special features of the "2 Tronic" gearbox
When towing with four wheels on the ground, the following rules must be obeyed: - gear lever in position N, - tow the vehicle at less than 30 mph (50 km/h) over a maximum distance of 30 miles (50 km), - do not add oil to the gearbox.

TOWING YOUR VEHICLE Without lifting (4 wheels on the road)

You should always use a towbar. The removable towing eye is stored in the tool case, located in the left boot trim. From the rear: F Unclip the side of the cover using the flat part of the towing eye, F Screw in the towing eye until it locks.

From the front: F Unclip the bottom of the cover, using the flat part of the towing eye. F Screw in the towing eye until it locks.

Lifting (2 wheels only on the road)

It is preferable to raise the vehicle by the wheels. Never use the radiator crossmember. When towing with the engine switched off, there is no braking assistance.

TOWING A TRAILER, CARAVAN, BOAT, ETC.
Only use original PEUGEOT tow bars that have been tested and approved from the design stage of your vehicle. The tow bar must be fitted by a PEUGEOT dealer. Your vehicle is primarily designed for transporting people and luggage but it may also be used for towing a trailer. Driving with a trailer subjects the towing vehicle to more significant stress and its driver must be particularly careful. Air density decreases with altitude, thus reducing engine performance. The maximum towing load must be reduced by 10 % for every 1 000 metres of altitude. Cooling: Towing a trailer on a slope increases the temperature of the coolant. As the fan is electrically controlled, its cooling capacity is not dependent on the engine speed. On the contrary, use a high gear to lower the engine speed, and reduce your speed. The maximum towing speed on a long slope depends on the gradient and the outside temperature. For vehicles fitted with a direct injection petrol engine, after towing or driving at high speed for a long period of time, the fan may operate for approximately 6 minutes. In all cases, pay attention to the coolant temperature. In certain cases of particularly arduous use (towing of the maximum load on a steep slope when the temperature is high), switching off the air conditioning permits the recovery of engine power and, therefore, an increase in the towing capacity. If the warning light comes on, stop the vehicle and switch off the engine as soon as possible. Tyres: Check the tyre pressures of the towing vehicle and the trailer, observing the recommended pressures. Brakes: Towing increases the braking distance. Lights: Check the electrical signalling on the trailer. Side wind: Take into acount the increased sensitivity to side wind.

FITTING ROOF BARS

When fitting transverse or longitudinal roof bars, use the accessories recommended by PEUGEOT and follow the manufacturer's fitting instructions. For further information, contact a PEUGEOT dealer.

Driving advice
Distribution of loads: Distribute the load in the trailer so that the heaviest items are as close as possible to the axle and the nose weight approaches the maximum permitted without exceeding it.

Please refer to national legislation in order to comply with the regulations concerning the transportation of objects which are longer than the vehicle.
