Alert Center: Not working

Thread posted 7/28/09 by Kenneth L 2003 Views, 14 Comments Title: Alert Center: Not working Version: 14.0 Message: Hi guys,I'm having problems with my Alert Center. Basicall, it looks like it's working because the service is running but it doesn't seem like it's polling or getting information from my performance counters. All I get were "Waiting for initial results. Click to refresh" on all my alerts. The following is the error from Event Viewer: Alert Center Startup threw a System TypeInitializationException error: TypeName=WhatsUp.NMAlertCenter.AlertCenterCentral, Message=The type initializer for 'WhatsUp.NMAlertCenter.AlertCenterCentral' threw an exception., InnerEception=System.ComponentModel.Win32Exception: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterLib.RegisterFiles(String arg0, Boolean unregister) at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterLib.RegisterCategory(String categoryName, PerformanceCounterCategoryType categoryType, String categoryHelp, CounterCreationDataCollection creationData) at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterCategory.Create(String categoryName, String categoryHelp, PerformanceCounterCategoryType categoryType, CounterCreationDataCollection counterData) at WhatsUp.Core.ScheduledT ask..ctor() at WhatsUp.NMAlertCenter.AlertCenterCentral..ctor() at WhatsUp.NMAlertCenter.AlertCenterCentral..cctor() StackTrace= at WhatsUp.NMAlertCenter.AlertCenterCentral.Get() at WhatsUp.AlertCenterService.AlertCenter.OnStart(String[] args), Source=

I keep getting this in Event Viewer every three or four minutes or so: E vent Type: Error
Event Source: Ipswitch Alert Center Event Category: None Event ID: 1100 Date: 8/15/2009 Time: 9:20:36 AM User: N/A Computer: WCBWUG Description: Exception thrown loading Ping Response Time performance monitor pivot IDs for the threshold ID=6 and . Exception=Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Not sure what is causing this to happen. Any ideas? Thanks, Rob Calhoun Re p l y

Rob, P lease ignore my request for your database. Could you give me information on your setup. I am looking for the number of
devices, the number of performance monitors (specifically Ping response Time), the number of active monitors.

W e need to emulate your system in house to see if we can reproduce the problem. Thanks, J amie Re p l y

J amie, This is our setup: W hatsUp Gold 14 Premium 2500 Device license W indows Server 2003 R2 S QL Server 2005 2 96 monitored devices 8 67 enabled active monitors 2 0 Custom Performance monitors E ach monitored device has a ping response time monitor I have not done much with Alert Center since upgrading and the Alert Center tab shows no Running Notification
Policies. However, we do have notification policies set up and working in the conventional way via Action Library/Action Policies. Not sure if that has anything to do with it but I thought I would mention it.

Rob, W ould it be possible to get a copy of your database so we can debug the problem? Thanks, J amie Re p l y

I doubt it. It is huge and kept on a seperate SQL server so I am not sure how I could get that to you. It is probably about 10 to 15 GB in
size. What else can you look at?

Rob, L ooking at your system it does not appear that you should be getting the SQL timeouts. However,
you did mention that your database is 10-15 Gigs and that seems pretty high for you setup.

I have a few more questions. 1 . What is the polling interval for your ping response time monitors?
2. What is the rollup configuration for the performance monitor? You can get this information from the console under the Configure -> Program Options -> Report Data.

W ould it possible to do a WebEx session with you? Thanks,

Jamie

J amie, Y ou may be right about the size of the Sql databse. It is on a seperate server from our WhatsUp installation and I do not
manage that part of the puzzle. I could find out the size and let you know though. As far as the polling interval for ping, I believe it is every 60 seconds. Here is the rollup info you asked for:

Rollup raw data after 1 day Rollup hourly data after 30 days E xpire daily data after 365 days I am not sure if I can do a webex session today or not. I am working from home today and probably all week so I am not
sure what response time would be like. Even accessing whatsup gold from here is a little on the slow side.

J ust so you know, most of the devices on our WhatsUp installation are switches, routers and firewalls. We do have some
servers but not as many as most WhatsUp users.

Rob, Ok, I will set up a test here where we do the performance ping poll every 1 minute, instead of the default 10 minutes.

A s for the WebEx, we can do it next week. Maybe by that time I will have reproduced the problem in house. Thanks, J amie Re p l y

J amie, D oes this sound like a SQL server issue? As I said before, I do not manage that part of the equation so I cannot be much
help with that. That is managed by a completely different group.

Rob, L ooks like SQL is bogging down, both errors are symptons of that. Does your SQL server host other applications? I am currently running a test with a similar amount of devices and performance monitors. Nothing to report yet. J amie Re p l y

J amie,

No this SQL server does host several other databases. I originally wanted to keep the database locally on the WhatsUp
Gold box but the server guys wanted to keep more historical data so they made me put it on a separate server. I never had any issues until I upgraded to version 14. Is the latest version that much more powerful the version 12.4? I love version 14 though and have no plans to revert back. Our SQL guy is out on vacation until tomorrow so I will ask him to look at his server, particularly the WUG database to see if he has any problems.
