ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Accomplishing a relative research had been a lifetime achievement and a treasure the researcher can always be proud of. The firmness in coming up with every single accurate data in his thesis had stunned his faith, but his hard work and perseverance has done beyond his expectations. He has soared and maximized his potentials, which he thought has been so hard, but in the end, he hasnt only finished his thesis, but he can proudly look at his wounded knees and say: its worth it. There had been many trials in completing the Factors Affecting the Childrearing Beliefs and Practices of Fathers in Rural Barangays of Batac City, and as he look back and as he step up to the curtail of his college life, the learning and values he developed in finishing this requirement will always be instilled as precious reminders to his wherever his journey to excellence take him. As he continues his quest to become a professional medical practitioner, he vows to uphold the attributes MMSU has embedded to his heart, and wherever he goes, hell always be a safeguard of health and an advocate of well-being. This thesis has concluded his life as a nursing student, and learning much beyond the theoretical perspective of nursing; he rolls up his sleeves and faces the numerous health circumstances that situate not just his family, but the community as a whole. Hell never forget the tough trials that almost compelled him to surrender, the trials that enabled and shaped his heart not just as a student but a promising nurse MMSU can always be proud of. iii

His achievements in his four-year stay in the academe hasnt been real in not because of the people that lighted his path and lightened his burden as he goes along the way and race towards that license everyone yearns to achieve. Looking back to the path he trudged, he cherishes every little effort that they had given him. Much to his desire to equal and give back the unparalleled and unequivocal love and support, he cannot help but extend his simplest yet sincerest gratitude. Prof. Lailanie S. Galutira, the ever supportive Dean of the College, Mr. Cliffton T. Reboroso, his thesis adviser, who, in his guidance and wisdom, selflessly worked around the clock addressing every demand and setback the study encountered, Dr. Manolita S. Crisostomo and Mr. Federico V. Nagtalon, the research lecturers, who shared their knowledge that shaped the researchers view of the study that successfully led to its successful completion, Hon. Jeffrey Jubal Nalupta, City Mayor, for letting the researcher to conduct his study within his locality, The respondents, who whole heartedly participated and willingly shared their insights which greatly contributed to the completion of this output; To his cluster mates- Harold, Remie, Jessica, Arman, Robi and Lenjay, for the untiring efforts for the polishing of the proposal; To his groupmates- Mathelle, Joie, Lea, Brenda, Shaira, Karina and Lomelyn, for their unending support and words of encouragement;

iv

Apart from himself, he should also thank and give gratitude to his parents Mr. Osias B. Aguinaldo and Mrs. Susana P. Aguinaldo, for their unending love, encouragements, incomparable support, constant sacrifices and source of inspiration; To his sisters, aunts, uncles and all his relatives. His whole family who have played a big role through his journey to life. For without them, he may not have been what he is now. And above all, he should also thank the most loving Creator who has given him the courage, perseverance and spiritual support, the Almighty God for continuously showering him with guidance and supervision, the strength to overcome any hindrance throughout the study

ABSTRACT AGUINALDO, BRYAN PACRIS., Mariano Marcos State University, College of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing, March 2010. FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHILDREARING BELIEFS AND PRACTICES OF FATHERS IN RURAL BARANGAYS OF BATAC CITY. Adviser: Mr. Cliffton T. Reboroso

This study was conducted to determine the factors affecting the childrearing beliefs and practices of fathers with children aged six to twelve years old in barangay Tabug, Batac City. This study used descriptive correlational method of research design in determining the childrearing beliefs and practices of fathers in barangay Tabug, Batac City. Descriptive research was used to determine the profile of the fathers. Correlational method on the other hand was used to identify the relationship of the respondents socio demographic profile to the factors affecting the childrearing beliefs and practices. Thirty fathers with children aged six to twelve were the respondents for this study. They were chosen through purposive sampling. Frequency count and percentage were used to describe the profile of the fathers who comprised the sample and are residents of barangay Tabug, Batac City. To determine the extent of beliefs and practice of fathers on childrearing along five aspects of child development social, physical, emotional, cognitive and spiritual, weighted mean was used. To determine whether significant relationships exist between the fathers profile and their beliefs and practices on childrearing, correlation analysis was made vii

using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation and interpretation of the correlation coefficients was made from the Table of Critical r values at .05 level of significance. The SPSS version 13 program has been used to facilitate calculations. The study revealed that all of the respondent-fathers belong to the adult stage with great majority belonging to the middle to late stages (28 or 93.34%), as indicated by their ages which range from 26 to 65 years and only two (2 or 6.67%) are relatively young adults as they belong to age bracket 18 to 25 years. One is still single, and the rest of the fathers are married (28 or 93.34%) with one who is widowed. More than half of the fathers were able to finish the secondary level and continued their studies in college with nine (9 or 30 %) able to obtain baccalaureate degrees, while five (5 or 16.67%) failed to graduate and two pursued a vocational course. Only few among the fathers (3 or 10 %) are shown to have a monthly family income of 10,001 pesos up to 15,001 pesos and another three (3 or 10%) with 15,000 pesos and higher. Half (15 or 50%) of the fatherrespondents are engaged in farming as source of their livelihood. It could be noted from the results that only a few are with white collar jobs three (3 or 10%) of whom are local government officials and only one (1 or 3.33%) is a teacher. The respondents are predominantly Aglipayans (18 or 60%), with some who are Roman Catholics (9 or 30%). Most of the fathers have two children (11 or 36.67%), while seven (7 or 23.30%) have three offsprings and five (5 or 6.70%) have only one (1) child. As to the respondents childrearing beliefs, the respondents were found to believe in social, physical, emotional and cognitive development. Moreover, the respondents were strongly believed in spiritual development. In practices, it was found out that social, viii

physical, cognitive and spiritual development was practiced frequently. However, it was practiced sometimes on emotional development. The socio-demographic profiles which were identified to have a significant relationship on the factors affecting the childrearing beliefs of fathers were occupation and religion and on the childrearing practices were age and educational attainment. In light of the findings, the researcher recommends that the knowledge and awareness of fathers on the positive and negative implications of the different childrearing beliefs and practices on the holistic development of the child must be enhanced through the participation of fathers in lectures or symposia on responsible parenthood and parenting conducted by experts or family counselors. Also, the bonding between the father and child must be made more fruitful with the holding of activities aimed at giving the father and the child the opportunity to play together, interact, share and to communicate more. Student nurses could include such activity in their community exposures or related learning experiences. And a follow-up research on the topic must be conducted to include other variables cultural and psychological.
