Spelling Aerobics

• Students will spell out the weekly spelling words using physical actions

• Instructor will assess students by making notes of which students seem
to have difficulties with the actions made up for the letters in certain
words

ACTIVITIES

30 minutes
Purpose: (why is this exercise included in the lesson)
To teach the students how to spell their weekly spelling list by including
movement which encourages memorization.
Detailed instructions: (how will this exercise be explained to the group)
1. Choose a quizmaster (instructor to start out). Quizmaster will decide on 3
letters no-one is allowed to say. Ex. i, s, t
2. Instead of saying the letter, a suitable action is decided upon for each
(salute, head scratch, jump, clap, twist)
3. Quizmaster now asks the class to spell the word together.
4. Whenever players come to outlawed letters, they must perform the
action instead of speaking the letter.
5. Spelling words for grade three- could, would, should, mother, father,
baby, child, children, boy, girl, family, saw.
6. Spelling words for grade 4's- quick, quickly, quit, quiet, question, Quebec,
quarter, quail, square, squeeze, queen, squirrel, quack, cheque, mosquito
7. Spelling words- Bonus words- Pangaea, Fossil, dinosaur, Albertosaurus.
