Course Description: Art History 180 is an introduction to the history of non-Western art from the emergence of that particular culture into modern times. This survey focuses on art from the Asian, African and American continents, and the Pacific Ocean cultures. Works of art will be analyzed with regard to formal issues and studied within the essential context of history and culture. Consideration will be given to factors that affect the production of art such as the particular features of an artists life (if known), the patron and audience, and important developments in history, politics, philosophy, economics, religion, and science. Learning Objectives: At the successful completion of this course, students will be able to: Identify (by title, artist [if known], date/era, country/region) major works of art. Explain the meaning of works of art within the cultural context of its production Understand and describe the most important characteristics of the various art historical periods, and Apply the acquired knowledge in class activities and quizzes. Quizzes Five (5) quizzes will be given throughout the semester. The dates are listed below. They will consist of multiple choice/true-false questions about works of art, concepts, issues, or terms from lectures and readings. Before each class, students will be given a list of important works of art, important terms and vocabulary. The exams are not cumulative. Since many of these cultures influenced the art of another, however, it is in the students best interest to briefly review ideas from past classes. More information on testing format will be given prior to the first quiz. At the end of the semester, the quiz grades will be averaged together to make up 60% of the students final grade.

Homework: Five (5) open-book homework assignments will be given throughout the semester. They will be posted electronically on the courses Angel website about two weeks before the next quiz. Questions are taken from both the textbook and lectures and will discuss historical and cultural contexts, philosophies and issues that affected the creation of art during the section discussed. After the homework is posted, the student will have about two weeks to complete the assignment, due the day of the quiz. Each student will get one attempt at a 100% on each of the homework assignments. Late submissions will result in a loss of ten (10) percentage points per day. At the end of the semester, the homework grades will be averaged together to make up 40% of the students final grade.

Attendance Policy: Attendance at lectures is strongly advised since important information will be given that aids in your understanding of the art and reinforce the concepts given in the textbook. Quiz questions will come from both the reading and lectures. Students are responsible for getting all the information that was missed during their absence. Behavior Policy: College is a time for developing life skills that are as important as the academic information learned. To be successful in a career, you will need to develop a strong work ethic, respectful social skills, and prove that you can be trusted to get things done well and on deadline. College is a setting for mature adults, and I expect you to act accordingly. Please respect those around you by shutting off your cell phones, i-pods, internet devices, etc., and not having a separate conversation with the person next to you. Academic Honesty: Your work on your quizzes and assignments is to be your own! Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated, and is grounds for immediate failure of the course and a recommendation for disciplinary action by the Office of Academic Affairs. http://www.canisius.edu/catalog/academic.asp Students with Disabilities: SUNY Geneseo will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented physical, emotional or cognitive disabilities. Students should contact the Director in the Office of Disability Services (Tabitha Buggie-Hunt, 106A Erwin) and their faculty to discuss needed accommodations as early as possible in the semester.
