LOGISTICAL INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPANTS Mongolia Economic Forum 2012 Following the successful achievement of the Mongolia Economic

Forum (MEF) in 2010 and 2011, the Mongolia Economic Forum NGO is hosting the MEF 2012 which will be held on March 5-6, 2012 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The main purpose of the Mongolia Economic Forum is to improve economic growth and development policy of Mongolia by engaging government officials, private sector actors, academics, foreign investors, donors, and civil society members. Useful Information about Mongolia Ulaanbaatar is situated in central east Mongolia. An independent municipality, the city is not part of any
province, and its population is over one million. In fact, according to recent estimates, this means approximately 60% of the country lives here. It is located just east of the center of the country.

Located in north central Mongolia, the city lies at an elevation of about 1,310 metres in a valley on the Tuul River. It is the cultural, industrial, and financial heart of the country. It is the center of Mongolia's road network, and is connected by rail to both the Trans-Siberian Railway in Russia and the Chinese railway system. The centre of the city is Sukhbaatar Square, from where all other distances are measured. Peace Avenue (Enkh Taivny rgn Chl) is the main street and it stretches from east to west through the center. It's the main shopping street and many of the restaurants are along it. The street also passes by the southern edge of the central square, Skhbaatar Square. UB is one of the most drab looking cities on the face of the planet, a travesty really, considering it's the capital of one the most beautiful and hospitable countries on earth. The city was founded in 1639 as a movable (nomadic) Buddhist monastic centre. In 1778 it settled permanently at its present location, the junction of the Tuul and Selbe rivers. Before that it changed location twenty-eight times, with each location being chosen ceremonially. In the twentieth century, Ulan Bator grew into a major manufacturing centre. Population: According to the National Statistical Office of Mongolia, total population of Mongolia is estimated by 2 754 685. In fact, according to recent estimates, this means approximately 60% of the country lives in UB. Approximately 30% of the total population is nomadic and semi nomadic. The majority of the citizens is originated from the Mongol ethnicity, though Kazakhs, Tuvas (called as Tsaatan) and other minorities also live in the country, especially in the west region. Airports and Transportation to the Centre: Chinggis Khaan International Airport is the international airport serving Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. It is 18 km southwest of the capital. It is the largest international air facility in the country. The airport is the main base of operations for national carriers MIAT Mongolian Airlines, Eznis Airways, Aero Mongolia and the Mongolian Airlines. See http://www.airport.mn for airport details. Public Transportation: There is a good network of both buses and trolley buses. Maps are available that show the routes and all the buses clearly display the route number. There is a standard charge of MNT 400 for buses and MNT 200 for trolley buses. Payment is made to the conductor.

Taxi: Taxi services run all around the city and the standard cost is MNT 500-600 per kilometer. Participants are advised to use only licensed taxis with meters and can call Taxi Service. Upon calling, the taxi company operator will ask for the callers telephone number and will give the caller taxis identification number, as well as the estimated time it will take to reach the caller. Travel Facilities (Flight Reservation and Confirmation): The majority of visitors arrive in Mongolia through Chinggis Khaan International Airport (IATA: ULN), which is located 18 km to the southwest of Ulaanbaatar. Many locals still call the airport by its old name "Bouyant Ukhaa". The airport was reconstructed in 1990, and the immigration, customs formalities and luggage delivery are relatively efficient. Banking and Currency Exchange Facilities: The currency of Mongolia is the Tugrug. The facilities available for changing money, cashing travelers cheques, obtaining cash advances on credit cards and transferring money are limited, although available. The normal banking hours are 9.00 13.00 and 14.00 to 17.00 although there are variations. American Express Travelers Cheques are the most widely accepted along with VISA, MasterCard and American Express Credit Cards. There are a few places other than banks that are able to change money, but visitors are advised to be careful of their money and possessions, visiting such places. Postal Services: The Central Post Office is located on the Sukhbaatar Square, Chingeltei District, Enkhtaivans Avenue. Hall A is open Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 21:00 hours, Sunday to Saturday from 9:00 to 20:00 hours. Hall B is open from 8:00 to 21:00 hours, Sunday to Saturday from 09:00 to 15:00 hours. The DHL International Courier Service Office is located on Enkhtaivans Avenue- 15A. The DHL service is available for private and official dispatches from Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 18:00 hours, Saturday from 09:00 to 13:00 hours. News Stand: There are two weekly English language newspapers - The Mongol Messenger and The UB Post. Both are available from some newspaper stands and the Central Post Office. Bookshops: There are quite a large number of books now available in languages other than Mongolian, about the history, culture and environment. The best places to try first are the Central Post Office, State Department Store and Interbook bookstore, offer a selection of foreign language books, gifts, stationery, and writing paper, gift wrapping paper, greeting cards and guide books. Pharmacy: Pharmacies are common in Ulaanbaatar, stocking variety of medicine. Check expiry dates carefully. The most known pharmaceutical group in Ulaanbaatar is Monos. Personal security: International cities that attract many tourists also attract those people who steal from tourists. Consequently, participants are advised to carry their valuables safely, especially on public transport. There might be pickpockets on the street, on buses and trams. Once participants have checked into their hotels, it is advisable to leave important documents such as passports in the hotel safe and to carry a photocopy. the hotel or place of residence while participants are sightseeing, shopping or dining out. Participants should keep photocopies of all these documents in a safe place in case they need to have them replaced. Currency/credit cards: The official currency is the Tugrug. It is not possible to pay in other currencies but there are plenty of ATM/cash machines to withdraw. As a result of these prolonged periods of intense cold, the city has an average annual temperature of -1.3C, giving it the dubious distinction of being the world's coldest capital.
