Feb 02 - Feb 08, 2012 other good reasons why a consumption tax like the FairTax is infinitely better than an income tax. What We Tax, We Discourage... The FairTax represents a new paradigm, a new way of thinking about taxation. At the heart of it is the notion, that it makes more sense to tax spending than to tax income. First of all, its a fundamental truism that taxing something tends to inhibit that thing. So if we tax income, it discourages people from earning more money. It doesnt stop them, of course. But it is a bit of a disincentive to working harder, if a large part of the income derived from such effort must be given up in taxes. Is this something we want as a society? No, we want people to feel encouraged to be as hardworking and enterprising as possible! On the other hand, if we tax spending instead of income, it will discourage spending. Again it doesnt stop spending (people will still buy and consume what they need or want), but it will tend to encourage thrift and savings. Is this what we want as a society? Actually, its exactly what we want! The FairTax Is a Progressive Tax There is a general consensus in our society that the Rich should pay a greater portion of the tax burden than the Poor. Assuming we want to create such a progressive tax system, how do we measure rich and poor? Is income the measure of wealth? Consider Mr. Frugal who earns $500,000 a year but lives very modestly, spending perhaps only $25,000 annually of his substantial income. Now consider Mr. Lavish who earns $250,000 a year (half of Mr. Frugals income), but he spends almost all of it on every indulgence that strikes his fancy. Which of the two are richer? Well, Mr. Frugal has more money in the bank. But Mr. Lavish certainly experiences more of what wealth feels like. Why? Because he spends his money more! Mr. Frugal does not. Mr. Frugal experiences essentially the same level of prosperity as someone earning and spending $25,000 a year. And yet under our current tax laws, he would generally owe much more in taxes than Mr. Lavish, simply because his enterprise creates more income. This is neither fair nor progressive nor does it benefit society in general. Mr. Frugals enterprise and hard work should not be rewarded with a bigger tax bill simply because they earn him more money which he squirrels away in a bank. Until he starts spending that money, hes not really deriving much benefit from his wealth. Mr. Lavish should pay more taxes than Mr. Frugal, because he enjoys his wealth more by living extravagantly. its how much we spend.

Inclusivity is perhaps the single most important human need to facilitate and demonstrate fairness for all members in an open and free society. When this principle need is compromised by appearances of unscrupulous self-interested privileged elites to perpetuate a systemic widening disparity between social-economic classes favoring exclusivity, it is imminently imperative to galvanize public opposition to mitigate this threat. A society that is governed by its collective citizenry should never be marginalized by its institutions or the people that run them. No institution should be more esteemed than its human beings. Rt. (reckless thinker) The use of sociology to inform and provide a comparative analysis of human behavior spanning across several millennia is quite an effective and useful tool for predicting the tendentious course of historic parallels. Past events are shaped by social, economic and political conditions and informed by geography, religion, art, technology and the inherited traditions and values that distinguish one culture from another. The aggregate of these elements form civilizations, whereupon close study reveals the unique characteristic customs that make them different in appearance. In spite of these differences, social behavior within these systemic structures remains reliably consistent. In other words, under similar conditions human beings respond and react similarly. This study seeks to expand the range of historic inquiry beyond the parallels that connect the present to the past by using conditional evidence to forecast events in the future. The object here is to paint in broad strokes the social, political and economic phenomenon that intermittently jarred the Roman Republic through three tumultuous episodic periods of their history. The journey will draw comparisons with Rome that precisely parallel America from 1963 to 2011, beginning with the assassination of Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus and the subsequent trucidation of his brother Gaius Gracchus, to the end of the Republic and establishment of the Roman Empire under Augustus Caesar. Ultimately, this study will support an argument which suggests that Roman Civilization was not only indistinguishably paralleled to the culture of the USA, but also, that its history foreshadowed the Kennedy assassinations, 9/11 with its subconsequent loss of social freedoms, the Occupy Wall Street protests, and the inevitable plutocracy presently emerging on the world stage to usher in a global Monocratic Empire.
so Byzantine, so oppressive that it profoundly disturbs the quality of life for all its citizens. Even those who may escape owing taxes per se cant escape the hair-tearing aggravation of simply having to prepare and file a tax return each year. And these problems are systemictheyre inherent in the Income Tax. No amount of tweaking can fix them. Whats needed is a real overhaul of the system, a dramatic new approach to the problem of how to finance Government. The FairTax, a bipartisan plan embraceable by Democrats and Republicans alike, represents the brightest hope for such reform. The FairTax Bill (HR25) is now winding its way through Congress, currently awaiting a critical vote in the House Ways and Means Committee. Essentially, it calls for the elimination of all income, payroll, estate, and gift taxes, and replacing them instead with a National Sales Tax at the retail (consumptive) level. The rate of this tax would be set so as to make it revenueneutral. That is, it would bring in the same amount of revenue as our current income-based tax system (That rate is currently determined to be 23% if figured inclusively, 29.87%
if figured exclusively Clarification of these terms will follow shortly.) Aside from its fairness, the beauty of the FairTax is its simplicity. If you buy something as the final consumer of the thinga pack of gum, a pair of swimming trunks, or a Boeing 747youll pay a federal sales tax on it. Of course, that will add a little to the final cost of the item. But if people now get to keep their entire paycheck with no deductions ever withheld, if they never have to pay tax on what they earn, or even file a tax return ever again, thats a trade-off most people would be happy to make. The implications of such a shift would be staggering. For one thing, it would widen the tax base to include all consumers, even the so-called underground economy drug dealers, prostitutes, and others, who earn and spend money in our society but dont report their income or pay taxes because their earnings are illegal. These deadbeat taxpayers would now have to pay their fair share of tax like everybody else... because they buy clothes, toilet paper, and toothpaste just like the rest of us. And whatever you buy, you pay tax on! Their tax contribution alone would be a pretty good argument in favor of the FairTax. But there are so many

Yiddishe Nachas, is an essay about the American Jewish mother and her unique relationship between her children in an ever-changing cultural dynamic that seemed to not only challenge, but maximize her intrinsic motherhood qualities. Jenna Weissman Joselit, the author of this essay, rejects the claim by cultural anthropologists who believe that the behavior of the Jewish mother to smother her children with excessive affection is rooted in centuries of persecution and tension. In fact, Joselit goes as far as to explain how Jewish mothers struggled to synthesize both American culture with their own traditional values and concerns. Thus, this analysis will briefly point out what Joselit meant by her statement that the cultural anthropologists mistook a specific cultural moment for a millenial tradition. In addition, an overview of the material that supports Joselits argument will also be presented. Mark Zborowski and Martha Wolfenstein are the two anthropologist whos research has concluded that the protectiveness, which was characteristic of the Jewish mother, was not only culturally distinctive but dysfunctional and neurotic a result of their arduous past. How ever, Joselit views these two anthropologists as guilty of stereotyping alll Jewish mothers by sub
talked about how Jewish women adopted to the cultural trends during the first quarter of the twentieth century. For example, with the emergence and observance of Baby Week Joselit writes Synagogues and churches set aside a Saturday and a Sunday, respectively, for a Baby Sabbath and a Baby Sunday. Moreover, with the observance of Baby Week came an emphasis and promotion of pasteurized cows milk. Joselit notes that New Yorks Jewish citizenry participated actively [needing] little inducement to visit a municipal milk depot. Another cultural trend that Jewish women conspicuously participated in was giving birth to their children in a hospital instead of laboring at home with a midwife. Though hesitant at first, Jewish women had dramatically more hospital births than traditional home births. Jews even elected to participate in Mothers Day, which was first observed in 1908. All in all, combining newly emerging cultural trends to old traditional values should not be interpreted as a millennial tradition. Thus, Joselit has not only shown that Zborowski and Wolfensteins conclusions are inconsistent with the facts, her evidence arguably exposes them as inadequate professionals that appear to be content with replacing extensive investigation with subjective and poorly thought out opinions.

As homeowners struggle with the recession and impact of declining home prices, some are considering whether to continue paying their mortgage or simply walk away from the obligation. As a homeowner, when you contemplate the recent decline in your homes value, perhaps below your mortgage balance, you may consider options that normally would never have entered your mind. Regardless of what you might hear from relatives, friends or advisors, you need to carefully consider the long-term impact of this important decision.

Like selling any asset at a loss during a depressed period, walking away from your property may not be a smart move from a longer-term perspective. While the current housing crisis is severe, past history provides some perspective. Historically, markets have recovered over time. One example of a regional price decline and subsequent recovery was in Southern California, which experienced a severe downturn in the early 1990s that saw home prices decline by 21 percent from their peak. However, prices recovered at an average rate of 6.9 percent per quarter, annualized for the next 14 quarters. Homeowners who purchased

Sex-oriented businesses and the Internet are synonymous for one another. Gone are the days of dark alley get-a-ways, where one drove to another county or to a seedy corner of the city to view the nude female form. Instead, businesses thriving on erotica or pornography are a hop, skip and a jump right into your easy chair and a casual click away onto the Internet. All that is required for entrance into these websites is a haphazard lie agreeing to be eighteen years of age at least for the moment. Pornography entering our homes has become an epidemic. This psychological virus crosses all racial lines, affects both genders and every age group. The relentless addiction latches itself to the psyche. By any standard, it has no value to society yet the number of pornographic websites from servers worldwide is growing exponentially, delivering every devilish fetish imaginable. Sexual predators lurk the Internet super-highways and byways for any unsuspecting, underage Internet traveler. Many innocents have already been sacrificed. In chat rooms, virtual worlds, via email, the mass access to the Internet has made pornography readily available and helped to propagate unthinkable treasons upon Americas youth. A study called Marketing Pornography on the Information Superhighway provides the best known evidence indicating that the number of pornographic images on the Internet is staggering. During their 18-month examination, the Carnegie Mellon study found 917,410 sexually explicit pictures, descriptions, stories, and clips. On Usenet newsgroups, they found 83.5% of the pictures were pornographic. The research group also uncovered that 71% of the explicit online images were lures from online adult pay sites enticing customers to fork over another months subscription. According to author, Kerby Anderson, Cyberporn is more than naked women. Demand for images goes far beyond what can be found in a bookstore magazine rack. Pedophilia, bestiality, bondage and sadomasochism make up a majority of the images. Many of the images are too offensive to even describe. Herein lays the greatest concern with this plague: The depth of depravity sought out and being fostered in the minds of humanity. The First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for redress of grievances. Americans value the freedoms protected by the First Amendment and would
die in defense of those rights. Regardless, the question lingers. Should our right to free speech impede or dissuade the governments responsibility to protect citizens from themselves? Citizens are protected from heroine or at least, hindered from access to it. Should they not also be protected from the addictive effects of pornography as well? In a Supreme Court case, Roth v. United States, the Court dissected this question. Is an individuals personal issue of morality something to be guarded by Big Brother? In the Roth case, the justices acknowledged material to be obscene if, first, an average person applying contemporary community standards found the work taken as a whole appealed to the prurient interests, and second, it was utterly without redeeming social importance. This very loose definition, however, allowed any material with merely a miniscule amount of social value to squeeze through the test parameters and gain First Amendment protection. One-hundred-sixty-seven years later, the Supreme Court revisited the obscenity rules in 1973, Miller v. California, and to this day, uses the same standards set by the Miller case. Under the test, the Court would find material obscene if: 1) the average person, applying contemporary community standards would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to prurient interest, (2) the work depicts or describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined the applicable state law, and (3) the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value. In other words the work considered in its entirety must arouse sexual lust, be considered hard-core pornography and have no serious social value. If any part of the Miller test cannot be proven, then the work is not obscene and receives Firs Amendment protection. Although Justice Burger made his disdain known about deciding morality issues in his Miller decision, he proceeded to declare that hard-core pornography is not protected under the First Amendment. Justice Burger concluded that states have legitimate interest in prohibiting the dissemination or exhibition of obscene material and further declared that it is in this context that a State may regulate without infringing on the First Amendment as applicable to the State through the Fourteenth Amendment. In reaffirming Roth vs. United States, the Burger Court also left open a loophole. It left jurisdiction of the obscenity test to be enforced on a state-wide level, rather than by federal standards. By doing this, the Burger Court relinquished enforcement of Millers obscenity test to the interpretations of each state, and in effect, only added.
to the ambiguity and subjectivity in their enforcement The narrowly drawn statutes reasoned that the protection of minors served a compelling interest and therefore, may be permissible for states to regulate under the Miller standards. Contradictorily, in the same opinion, the Burger Court refused to impose regulation standards on the Internet for fear it would have a chilling effect on free speech. The Court declared that the Internet was different than any other medium of free speech. By indicating the special category the Internet is considered to be, the Burger court allowed the proliferation of pornography on the Internet, with little safeguards for the young children that Justice Burger admitted responsibility to protect. Avonne Fraser, a global human rights watcher, who also represented the Clinton administration on the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women, stated that pornography, sex tourism, human trafficking and illegal immigration are often related. Fraser promotes a grassroots effort to radically change the perception of pornography by the mainstream. All good intentions aside, the legal pornography business is a $56 billion dollar industry and does not appear to be fading away. Its demand is too great. The delicate balancing act of weighing First Amendment rights against social responsibility has created a chasm too wide to bridge. And, thus today, the smut industry is legitimized into our mainstream market. It is tragic that the Supreme Court has undermined the value of protecting the minds of our youth by allowing the Internet to be considered a community of free speech for this particular form of expression. The effects of addiction to pornography are real. Research documents that the ill effects of the mass availability of explicit images on the Internet may have a direct relationship to the increased instances of rape and pedophilia. It is documented time and time again that much of these communication and transactions are initiated or completed using Internet technology. The same Internet technology the Supreme Court failed to include in implementing its Miller obscenity standards. Pornography on the Internet remains a blight on society, continuing to warp young minds and encouraging rape and

sexual deviancy against children and adults. In more current cases, the Supreme Court held, in FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, that a radio broadcast of a monologue entitled Filthy Words, previously delivered to a live audience by comedian George Carlin, was patently offensive and indecent because it involved repeated use of the words referring to excretory or sexual activities or organs during an afternoon broadcast when children were in the audience. The Pacifica polarity held that the content of the speech did not violate the First Amendment. Instead, the context of the broadcast was critical in determining the scope of Constitutional protection. The Court determined that the radio could be easily accessed by anyone including children. The ease in which children may happen upon inappropriate material was more a factor than the content of the material. Here again, we witness a court afraid to make a definitive stand against online pornography regardless of the obvious contradictions in their opinions from case to case. Instead, American citizens and children are sacrificial lambs sad yet necessary in order keep our perception of free speech intact. Generally, the Court measures inherent harm to minors relative to the ease with which minors can access that harmful speech yet they continue to keep a hands-off mentality when it comes to the Internet. This lack of backbone demonstrates an ardent inconsistency that runs straight through the heart of American law, and therefore, its people. We realize the intrinsic harm, but it is not egregious enough. Even at the cost of Americas innocent, the Supreme Court continues to be indecisive.

Women ages 30 and older are growing increasingly aware of new wrinkles with each passing year. Yet evidence suggests that sun spots may have as much of an impact on age-related appearance as wrinkles. Nearly 63 percent of women older than age 35 experience age or sun spots, discolorations and uneven skin tone. The dark side? The problem reflects your apparent age. Getting a clear, even skin tone without discoloration is just as important as wrinkle-fighting to achieving a rejuvenated, youthful appearance, says Dr. Ellen Marmur, prominent New York City dermatologist and author of Simple Skin Beauty. To some patients, its even more important. Dermatologists like Marmur call it hyperpigmentation, but its various types are commonly known as age
spots, freckles and melasma, brown patches of skin triggered by a hormone imbalance. Age spots, sun spots and liver spots are all the same ailment -- pouches of melanin where the skin pigment has overproduced and dumped uneven amounts, the majority of which are a result of sun damage. According to Marmur, the two most used topical treatments for discoloration are hydroquinone and retinoids, which both may have irritating side effects and require a prescription. However, a new alternative, StriVectin-EV Get Even Brightening Serum, is an over-the-counter solution thats clinically proven to work quickly without the same risky side effects. StriVectin-EV Get Even products, both the serum and new Get Even Spot Repair, combine natural

But to treat the long-term problem, sufferers of dark spots should also heed the following sun advice: *Wear sunscreen yearround with an SPF of 30. *For prolonged sun exposure, get a wide-brimmed hat to wear outdoors. *Neutralize stubborn spots with peach-toned concealer while using StriVectin-EV Get Even products to slow down melanin production.

Mamas Fabric centers on Beatrice Dixon, an extraordinary mother who was a community organizer and who believed deeply in the goodness of people and in the American dream. She became a mother figure to people from all walks of life, and once it became known that she had a passion for sewing, people began providing her with beautiful pieces of fabric. She passed away in 2002, at the age of 90. As a result of her passion for people and sewing, the artist combined her collection of fabrics with his photographic skills to bring more than 30 Americans from diverse ethnic backgrounds together to tell about their familys journey through America and how they feel about being an American.
