FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family, Peace and all good! The backdrop for todays Gospel from Mark (1:29-39) is the continuing saga of Job (7:14; 6-7). Initially confident that he would be able to maintain his confidence in God no matter what reversals he should suffer in life, Job is now at the breaking point. He has lost everything and everyone that matters to him. And when he calls out to God, God is strangely silent. Lets be honest: have you ever felt like Job at times? I know I have. By the same token, have you ever met anyone who reminded you of Job? I have. I sometimes meet people who have undergone every imaginable sort of pain, suffering, and loss. And I am often at a loss as to what I could possible say or do for them. Words are so inadequate and futile: I know just how you feel is often the very last thing people want or need to hear. This week, for example, I met with a family (Ive changed the details to protect their privacy). The husband and father has been unable to get adequate work. He has exhausted his unemployment benefits and savings and is struggling with health issues as well. The wife and mother is trying to support the family with her minimum-wage job. Their home has gone into foreclosure and they have moved in with their adult children. We have about as much now as when we were first married, they told me. Well, what can I, what can we do for you as your parish family? Im thinking: food, gas money, help with the rent, job referrals. Well be fine, Father, they answered. We just stopped by to see if you would pray with us. God has been so good to us. Were having a little bit of a rough time just now, but what weve lost is only material stuff. We still have each other and our family. Your prayers would really help, though. Really? All you want is my prayers? I was stunned. It seemed like so little, but it clearly meant a whole lot to this couple. It really hit home to me: we forget about the meaning and power of prayer in our livesand through us, in the lives of others. In todays Gospel, Jesus prays over and heals Peters mother-in-lawand then (unfairly, perhaps), she has to get up and fix food for everyone! After dinner, Jesus helps and heals the neighbors. The next morning, He heads for other towns and villagesbut only after taking time first to pray, to be with the Father.

2 | MISSION SAN LUIS REY PARISH, Oceanside, California February 5, 2012

Everything Jesus did, He wants us to do. When He prayed for and healed people, He became a direct channel for Gods grace and healing power. His presence and prayer made a difference in peoples lives. And He wants us to do the same for others. (Note, however: Jesus did not work 24/7; He did not heal everyone everywhere. He did what He could; then He rested, prayed, Recharged His batteries spiritually. We need to do likewise. We frequently feel totally powerless and helpless when it comes to relieving the pain and suffering of othersespecially that of the people we love most. We cant fix people! But we can offer our presence, support, and prayers. In the solidarity of friendship, presence, genuine care and prayerGods healing and grace are most definitely made manifest. Not only can that make a world of a difference, it makes us different, and, by consequence, our world as well. God bless,

This part of the Mass is now the Penitential Act, not the Penitential Rite. This change may have happened to reserve the reference to the Penitential Rite to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In the Penitential Act, the priest calls for the act, the act is done by the community and the priest offers a concluding absolution. This absolution is not the same type as given in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The absolution given in the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a declaration. The priest declares I absolve you from your sins. In the Penitential Act of the Mass, the manner is a request (not a declaration); May almighty God have mercy on us. The Confiteor has a strong devotional and individualistic nature, which makes it suitable for the penitential seasons of the liturgical year. It also has a communal thrust in our acknowledgement for the assembly to pray for us. As for the doom and gloom? Ill reserve it for the next NFL season. ~~Bill Bischoff, Director of Catechetical Ministry

Fr. Chuck PS: This weekend we celebrate the conclusion of Catholic Schools Week. The second collection this weekend will be for the support of our parish school, Old Mission Montessori. Thank you so much for your prayers, presence and support on behalf of our wonderful Parish School!!

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
With gratitude for the gifts they have received, parishioners and visitors made a joyful return to the Lord of the following:

COLLECTION FOR THE WEEKEND OF 1/29/12: Plate Collection: $4,878.33 Envelope Collection: $11,284.37 EFT Envelope Collection: $752.00 On-line Giving: $228.00 TOTAL SUNDAY COLLECTION: $17,142.70 OTHER: SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: OMMS donations Franciscan Missions: TOTAL COLLECTIONS: $1,636.80 $261.00 $19,040.50

THE CATECHETICAL MINUTE (ROMAN MISSAL)

QUESTION: From several highly agitated parishioners; why have we gone back to saying the Confiteor? That belonged to the Old Mass. I thought we had moved away from this doom & gloom!! RESPONSE: The word Confiteor is the Latin for the words I confess the beginning of Form A of the Penitential Act. Prior to the Novus Ordo, the Mass of Vatican II, both the Confiteor and the sign of the cross were not in the proper of the Mass, but were recited at the foot of the altar. The sense of the prayer is heavily penitential and was originally attended to help the priest maintain his contrite demeanor. At the Vatican Council the prayer was incorporated into the Mass itself and became part of the first Penitential Rite and recited by everyone.

Average weekly collection for the parish operating expenses this fiscal year to date: $21,594.45 Our weekly target is: $24,400.00

BUSINESS UPDATE
You may have heard recently that the diocesan property to the east of the parish has been sold. This is true. The parish was in communications with the Diocese prior to the sale and has been in discussions since. The future plan for the property is not yet known but we are in communication with the Diocese and agents for the owner and are optimistic about our future. We will share more details as they are available. ~~Allen Hartman

LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fasting (the eating of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in between snacks) applies to those between ages 21-59 who are in good health and would not be hampered in their work by fasting. The only days that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by law. Abstinence (the exclusion of meat for the entire day) includes anyone from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not be harmful to ones health. The days of full Abstinence are Ash Wednesday and all Fridays during Lent. Lent is a time for us to voluntarily choose to do penance and mortification as an expression of gratitude to God for what Christ did for us through His Own Suffering and Death. It is an attempt to respond to the love that He so willingly gave to us. LAS MADRINAS ALTAR SOCIETY will have their monthly meeting on Tue., Feb. 7th at 1:00 p.m. in the Parish Dining Rm. For more information, please call Marilyn Gilliland at 760-967-6397

WHAT IS A SMALL CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY IN OUR PARISH?

Small Christian Communities, commonly called SCCs, are small groups of Christians who come together regularly to pray, share their human experiences, and share their faith with one another. The group reads scripture together and seeks ways to understand what God might be saying to them so they can respond to Gods presence in their lives and in the world. If you have ever been part of an RCIA group, or other small faith-based group you will know that this experience is like the early Church. Jesus said, Where two or three are gathered, there am I in their midst. (Matthew 18:19). Each community has its own Pastoral Facilitators who meet with the Core Team once a month for spiritual growth / guidance and training. Material presented at these Facilitators meetings are shared with the individual communities who meet weekly or twice a month in each others homes. We invite you to consider joining an SCC. We are making a difference in the lives of those who participate in them and in our Parish community. All cultures are welcomed to join or start a group (8 to 12 people). Find out more Eileen Costa, SCC Coordinator, at (760) 231-9930; Bartolo Mndez at (760) 945-3701; Tavale Tavale at (760) 295-4088. Be a part of bringing the presence of Christs love into your and our Community.

Del Escritorio del Prroco

Querida Familia Parroquial,

Salmo 147(146):4

Qu Es Una PEQUEA COMUNIDAD CRISTIANA En Nuestra Parroquia?
