Cashnxt Technologies promises to provide
banking solutions for rural India

he branchless banking ini-
tiative of countries like Bra-
zil and Philippines inspired
these social entrepreneurs
to start a financial service outside
conventional banks using infor-
mation and communication
technologies.
Cashnxt Technologies is the
latest entrepreneurial venture of
Anish Achuthan (26) and Ramee-
na Rabeedin (28). Both have ei-
ther worked or founded a couple
of start-ups based in Kerala, mak-
ing their entrepreneurial journey
more interesting.
Ridiculed by classmates and
finding no support and encour-
agement from parents, the
friends are out to prove that
dreams can be fulfilled even in
the least conducive of environ-
ments.
Learning from failures
The seeds for the venture (Mo-
beo Technologies) were sown in
2007, where they christened their
low-cost banking terminal as
‘Personal Banking Machines’.
These machines enabled custom-
ers access ATM and banking ser-
vices using their finger print and
a mobile pin. But after a year of
operation they were forced to
close down due to unfavourable
market conditions, including RBI
regulations, viability of PBM
hardware distribution, etc.
“We realised our mistakes and
took the failure of Mobeo as a
learning experience,” says Anish,
president and CEO of Cashnxt
Technologies, which they re-
launched in 2008. “We decided to
partner with companies that had
already launched similar low-
cost banking devices for the rural
poor.”

Their new kiosk is a

Oxford extends freeman right to women

high after the landslide
win in the opening ODI,
in-form batsman Yuvraj
Singh’s back injury is India’s only
concern as they prepare to take
on a battered England in the sec-
ond one-dayer of the seven-
match cricket series on Monday.
After drubbing the visitors by a
massive 158 runs, the Indians are
hoping that Yuvraj, who pum-
melled the English attack with an
unbeaten 138, would be fit to take
the field on Monday. Skipper Ma-
hendra Singh Dhoni says a final
call on the attacking left-hander,
who required a runner for most
part of his innings in the Rajkot
ODI, would taken just before the
match. Pace spearhead Ishant
Sharma, meanwhile, is all but out
of the match after Dhoni admit-
ted that his ankle sprain needs
more time to heal.

sessed; there is no limit to
what he can do. He loses all
reason and does things out
of sheer instinct as though he has
the strength of a 1000 elephants.
That is ‘Varanam Aayiram’ for
you.
It explores the father-son bond
in depth, trying to bring out how
a father inspires his son since his
childhood days and how the child
grows, struggling to find himself
until passion overtakes him and
he finds solace in it, just as his
father did. Here, both father and
son are possessed. Possessed by
love and possessed by passion.
The movie begins with Krish-
nan (Suriya), dying after a long
struggle with throat cancer. His
son Surya (Suriya again), an army
major who is heading to Kashmir
on a rescue mission, crumbles
when he hears the news. He drifts
into his past, remembering and
savoring every memory of his fa-
ther and the things he taught
him. As the flashback begins,
Krishnan is shown as a romantic,
who woos Malini (Simran) and
marries her. He is also an open
minded and caring father, who
always wants the best for his son
though they were facing financial
problems. Somewhere between
these things, he teaches his son
how to love and how to live. And
Suriya looks up to him as an idol.

And both times, loving with all
his heart.
The first half of the movie
breezes away light heartedly with
five of its seven songs coming
even before the interval. The gen-
eral pace of the movie is quick
with scenes flashing by, all of
them having some impact or the
other on you. The latter half gets
more serious and its message
shows quite bluntly; saying no to
drugs, booze and smoking. The
movie hits the smokers hard as
that is what ultimately leads to
Krishnan’s death.
Suriya as Krishnan is brilliant
and is almost perfect if it weren’t
for the makeup that was scream-
ing for attention. The youngster
role too is equally brilliant and

complement them. Antony has
yet again proved his editing bril-
liance.
Totally realistic with many
scenes tugging at your heart and
at your tear glands, ‘Varanam
Aayiram’ is an out-and-out Suri-
ya movie that not only shows him
maturing as a person in reel life
but also as an actor in real life. ■
