Anger at landfill tragedy
The family of a man killed in a landfill site accident have expressed anger over the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Yesterday an inquest found that David Layland, 23, was probably crushed by heavy machinery at the site in Mallusk in 2008. The Layland family said he had persistently pressed for improved safety measures at the site, and said procedures had not been followed. Mr Laylands mother Sharon Crawford and his widow Carol Layland are pictured leaving Old Town Hall courts in Belfast yesterday. See page 6

Mr McNarry dramatically quit the UUP Assembly team last week, after leader Tom Elliott demoted him over remarks made in a newspaper. BY PHILIP BRADFIELD

A DEADLY infection which killed four babies has again been discovered on the taps at a hospital in Londonderry. Yesterday, it was revealed that the pseudomonas bacteria was uncovered after a test at the neo-natal unit at Altnagelvin, Londonderry, where an infant died before Christmas. Steps have been taken to ensure newborns do not come into contact with the infected supply and only sterile water is used for their direct care. No babies are infected but two have it on their skin. Fury at EU Maze cash

ShoCkED English MPs yesterday rejected a Stormont ministers testimony that the IRA carried out genocide against unionists in south Armagh. Danny kennedy was giving

evidence at Stormont, along with families of the 10 Protestant workmen massacred by the IRA at kingsmills in 1976, to English MPs from the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee. The committee is visiting Northern Ireland on a low-key information visit, with a par-

ticular interest in hearing from various groups about dealing with Northern Irelands past. We felt it was important to engage with them, Mr kennedy said. But they were not accepting of my term genocide to describe what happened in south Armagh.

however, I stand over the term, because the experience of many unionists in the area was that the IRA had a dedicated campaign to remove them. Whether you want to call it ethnic cleansing or genocide, it amounts to the same thing. Turn to page 5

UNIoNIST politicians and victims of IRA atrocities have reacted angrily to the revelation that 18m of European funding has been approved for a conflict resolution centre at the Maze. It has been claimed that the multi-million pound investment will come out of a PEACE III pot of funding for Northern Ireland. It was reported last night that the centre is set to be confirmed in the coming weeks as part of a 300m Turn to page 12
