Class Room: 1102 Klehm Hall Class Times: Thursdays 6:00-8:30 pm Course Description This course focuses on forces transforming leadership science, processes, and skills in todays technological society; leadership theories; implication of fundamental changes taking place in the workplace; and leadership, characteristics, competencies, and challenges. (2009). Leadership: Enhancing the lessons of experience (6th ed.). New York: McGraw-Hill/Irwin. Course Objectives Participants will: 1. Identify multiple theories or models of leadership and describe how each impacts leadership roles and expectations; personal leadership characteristics; and the competencies and capabilities for leaders. 2. Describe the functions, knowledge, and skills that managers and leaders need to achieve the goals of organizations. 3. Analyze how the past and present theories, models, and related research of leadership can guide leader behavior and development. 4. Apply Psychological Type Theory (MBTI) and how personality profiles influence leadership and management styles, strengths, and strategies for leadership success. 5. Develop skills necessary to practice critical self-reflection as a tool for professional learning and growth. 6. Assess their own competencies as leaders against theories, models, research, and proven practices of leadership and develop an action plan for leadership development. Course Requirements: 1. Complete assigned readings. 2. Attend all classes. 3. Complete all assignments and participate in all activities. 4. Take all quizzes and exams.

Accommodation for Persons With Disabilities In cooperation with Disability Services, reasonable accommodation will be provided for students with disabilities. The student must contact the instructor and document the disability through Disability Services (581-6583 or at the 9th Street Hall). Any requests for special considerations related to attendance, pedagogy, examinations, etc. must be discussed with and approved by the instructor. Course Fee This course includes a $15 material fee for the use of copyrighted, single use MBTI personality assessment that is integral to the course. Attendance Policy On-time attendance is required and is critical to this class. You cannot learn from the in-class work and the experiential collaborative activities of this class, unless you are present physically, mentally, and emotionally. The class and in-class activities cannot be made up. Emergencies are the exception and not the norm. Each individual case will be considered by contacting the instructor by email as soon as possible. Verification is required, i.e. doctors note or EIU Health Services receipt. Inform the instructor by email BEFORE conflicting business or activities. Every three late arrivals (5 minutes or more), will count as one unexcused absence. If a student has two or more unexcused absences, the students final grade will be lowered one letter grade. University Policies, Rules, Regulations, and Deadlines Students are expected to read and be familiar with all university policies, rules, regulations, and deadlines related to them. 1. The document should be written in a concise manner and prepared in a professional way.

All papers must be typed and follow current APA format. 2. The report should be informative, detailed, however, concise for technical readers. 3. The report should not be less or more than the assigned pages. 4. The report should be based on factual observation and resources instead of speculation.
5. Use double spacing and 1 inch margins on the left side, top, and bottom. A 1 inch margin

is standard for the right side. All text should be aligned left with five space paragraph indentations.
6. Due Date Policy for Reports. Due dates are provided with the assignment. Late

submissions will be penalized ten percent for each day after the due date.

Grading Plan and Evaluation This course is designed for graduate-level learning consistent with Eastern Illinois Universitys Graduate School policy and guidelines. Written assignments must be word processed and meet EIUs writing standards of correct English grammar and composition. Significant writing errors may result in the assignment being returned as unacceptable with no points. All assignments have to be turned in on the assigned due date. Presentations must be given on the assigned date. Brief Assignment and Activity Guidelines Case Study Papers- You will submit two written case studies during the semester. The response to each will be no less than four and no longer than six pages long, double spaced with one inch margins following the current APA guidelines. A separate page with at least three references is required for each paper. Online references must be from leadership related journals. Leadership Meeting Report- You will attend a community leadership meeting and write a three to five page response paper describing leadership principles that you observed. A separate page with at least three references is required. Online references must be from leadership related journals. In-class Group Activities- You will participate in some in-class activities that will be evaluated. Groups will be formed in class to respond to a given situation. A one page word processed reflection paper on the activity will be due the week following the activity. The instructor will notify you of the required papers. Group membership will be changed regularly. In class activities cannot be made up if they are missed. Tests- There will be one test given during the term. Make up tests will not be given unless an advance notice is provided to the instructor and approval is granted. Quizzes- You will be given unannounced quizzes at the beginning of any given class. The quizzes will be on information from the assigned reading and previous discussions. If you arrive while the quiz is being administered you will continue the quiz from the point that you arrive. Quizzes may not be made up. The lowest quiz score will be dropped. Group Presentations- You will be assigned a group to research and present one of the selected Leadership Skills. This presentation is due the last two class days of the semester. Your presentation topic will be provided by the instructor by February 2, 2011. One half page (approximately 150 words) abstract of your presentation is due on the day of your presentation.

FINAL LEAP Paper- You will prepare a Leadership Effectiveness and Action Plan (LEAP). This 5-7 page paper will be an integrative paper in which you summarize what you understood about leadership, assess your own leadership, and develop an action plan for how you will continue to grow as a leader beyond this course. Individual Presentation- To encourage outside reading about current events on leadership principles. Give a five minute presentation to the class on some of the information in the article. Sign up for presentation date in class. Make sure you save copies of all your work, assignments, and quizzes to verify your work. Grades will be determined by dividing the total points received by the total points possible to find a percentage. A letter grade will be assigned using the following point scale: 90-100=A, 8089=B, 70-79=C, 65-69=D, below 65=F. Cell Phone and Text Messaging Policy See EIU policy. Please be courteous and attentive during class. Thank you. Severe weather Most classes (Monday-Friday) will be covered by Eastern Illinois University's severe weather policy and procedures. Students should listen to local television and radio stations if there is any possibility that classes might be cancelled.
