PULLMAN ACCOMMODATIONS
Pullman offered a wide variety of sleeping accommodations in their cars. These ranged from the lowly section to the deluxe Drawing Rooms. Pullman described its sleeping cars by the number of each type of accommodation, such as 8-1-2 for an 8 section - 1 drawing room 2 compartment car. Heres a quick look at each type of accomodation
SECTION NIGHT DAY Sections The classic Pullman accommodation, the section of a sleeping car was an open area with seats for daytime travel which were converted by a porter to an upper and lower berth. Later they were modified to have curtains for privacy. This was the most common way to travel on an overnight train during the heavyweight era.
Drawing Rooms The elite paid more for drawing room accommodations, which featured an enclosed room with a small couch opposite a seating section. At night the seats were converted to upper and lower berths and the couch became a bed. These rooms were equipped with a private lavatory. Compartments The compartment was smaller than a drawing room and didnt have the sofa/bed. Single Bedrooms These were small rooms with a single bed. Later versions had a sofa which converted at night. Double Bedrooms By adding a berth over the convertible sofa, the bedrooms evolved into double occupancy

PULLMAN PLAN 3979 8-1-2 SLEEPER

The 8 section - 1 drawing room - 2 compartment sleeper was one of Pullman's most popular designs. In 1937 there were 243 cars built to plans 3979a alone. Nearly half of these cars were used in Pullman pool service nation wide, the rest were assigned to, and painted for, various railroads nationwide. These models feature correct air-conditioning parts and full lettering inclding car names.

The 10 section - 1 drawing room - 2 compartment design was one of Pullman's 3 most popular sleeping car configurations with over 260 cars built to plan 3585 and its derivatives. After the 1948 break up of Pullman many of them were sold to various railroads nationwide, where they continued into service into the 1960's. These models feature correct air-conditioning parts and accurate paint, lettering and names.

If there was a Mother of all Pullmans, this would be it. The 12 section - 1 drawing room design of plan 3410/ 3410a was the single most popular Pullman floor plan with over 920 cars built. Putting this in perspective, thats more than the total number of 3000 series plan 8-1-2, 10-1-2, 14 section and 10-1-1 sleepers built combined!

These cars carried some of the more colorful Pullman names with many being named after famous Indian chiefs. A 10-1-1 Pullman car has also never been offered in HO plastic.

The 6 compartment - 3 drawing room cars of plan 3523 and 3523a were an unusual all-room design that found favor on many long distance trains, particularly between New York and Florida. The 6-3s had an unusual window arrangement with 12 small, single windows along one side and numerous tightly packed paired windows on the other. Many of these cars were named after famous composers and authors. Again, these cars have never been available as a plastic HO model.

Cars of essentially the same design were built for many other railroads coast to coast, and they served many years in a wide variety of services. REA EXPRESS REEFER

Following WWII the Railway Express Agency (REA) handled much of its express and parcels traffic in a variety of wooden express reefers and baggage cars added to the front of passenger trains. In 1947 REA ordered five hundred all new steel express cars from ACF. These cars utilizing welded construction and featured a new high speed truck design. The cars were ice cooled, but the ice bunkers were of a collapsible design that folded out of the way when not needed. This allowed these cars to carry both loads that needed refrigeration as well as standard parcels. These cars travelled from coast to coast on all major railroads. When delivered REAs cars were painted in a fancy silver and green scheme meant to blend with the streamlined passenger cars then in vogue. After a short time in service the cars showed a tremendous amount of dirt and were quickly repainted into a variety of green paint schemes. The first of these was applied in 1949 and carried only Dulux gold lettering. In 1952 the red and white Railway Express Agency diamond was added. This scheme was modified in the 1960s with a more modern design logo and white lettering. These cars lasted in service until the coming of Amtrak. Fifty similar cars were built for the Atlantic Coast Line railroad at the same time as REAs cars. These were delivered in a two-tone purple and silver scheme that lasted into the 1960s. After 1960 the ACL painted its cars green with silver lettering. This is the first time these important cars have been available in an HO plastic kit.
