CV6107 Design Project Design of single bay portal frame 1.

Frame geometry and loadings

The geometry of a single bay portal frame is shown in Fig. 1. Note that the length of the inclined members BC and CD are depended on the design parameter a. The frame is is fixed at points A and E and subjected to the following loadings: Permanent action: Self weight from purlin, cladding and roof finishes etc. It is idealized as three vertical point loads at B, C and D as shown in Fig. 2a. Variable action 1: Wind loading. It is idealized as three horizontal point loads at B, C and D (Fig. 2b). Variable action 2: Roof loading (due to access to the roof level for maintenance). It is idealized as three vertical point loads at B, C, and D as shown in Fig. 2c. Note that all the loadings shown in Fig. 3 are unfactored. Q1. Select a value of a and then determine the unfactored loadings. Q2. Properly factor and combine the permanent and variable actions according to EN 1990 and thus determine the most critical load combination(s). 2. Plastic analysis and design of frame

Q3. Assume that a single I section of S275 is applied to the whole frame. Using the plastic design method to determine a suitable I section for the portal frame. Ignore all instability effects and perform all the necessary member strength checks according to EC3 Part 1-1. Indicate clearly where you would place the lateral bracings. Calculate the total weight of steel sections used in the design.

3. General portal frame design

Q4. Assume that lateral displacement constraints are only applied at points A, B, C, D and E. (i) Carry out all necessary structural analyses for the frame according to the EC3 Part 1-1. Draw the bending moment, shear force and axial force envelopes of the frame for your design. (Note: You may need to carry out second order analysis or equivalence according to the EC3 Part 1-1.) (ii) Design the portal frame by selecting suitable I sections of S275 for the members. (iii) Calculate the total weight of the steel sections used in you design.

Note and hints

(1) Use the value of a selected in Q1 when designing the frame for Q3 and Q4. (2) You could ignore the self weight of all I sections. (4) In Q3, more than one plastic analyses corresponding to different load combination might be needed. (5) Similarly, when answering Q4, more than one structural analyses corresponding to different load combinations might be needed in order to determine the response envelopes of the frame. (6) For Q3 and Q4, you are allowed to use any structural analysis programme (but NOT design programme) to complete the calculations. (7) You must state clearly all your assumptions and properly quote and refer to appropriate clauses from the Eurocodes. (8) Besides the corresponding Eurocodes, the following materials could be useful: T2.
