DESIGNS FOR BEAD CROCHET, No. 1.

WE in this Number present the first specimen of a series of Designs suited to Beads and coloured
Crochet work, which it is our intention from time to time to lay before our readers. This one is well
suited to a purse, border of a stool or hassock, in black and red, &c. When used as a border, it
will be finished top and bottom with the sprigs, as shown above, and if as a set pattern the figure is
repeated according to the commencement on the opposite side.

ENIGMA.
I AM NOT straight, neither am I crooked, but while my form partakes of both qualities, the former
greatly preponderates. I belong to the fairer portion of the creation, yet as Hercules twined the
distaff, so some of the ruder sex amuse themselves with me. I am not a pen or a pencil, but when in
use I occupy the position assigned to both. I am a manufacturer of fabrics in cotton, silk, and wool;
neither do I scruple to impress the precious metals into my service; but for all this the Factory Bill
affects me not, for, prized by the rich, and especially by those afflicted with nervous ennui, they
protect and foster me in their homes; nevertheless, while contributing to their amusement, I have
not scorned to assist the poor in earning their scanty meal. Erratic and eccentric in my movements,
I am easily guided by those who understand me, and that understanding is obtained nearly as
readily as the fact is discovered of my power to show off a beautiful hand to the greatest advantage,
giving it a commanding position and the companionship of industry. And now, dames and maidens,
my fair mistresses, I crave of you my name.

LEAF AND PINE EDGING.

Make a chain, and on it a row of double crochet.

1st row. 1 long, 2 chain, miss 2, repeat.

2nd row. Double crochet.

3rd row. 1 long, 2 chain, 1 long in same loop, 5 chain, miss 5, 1 long, 9 chain, miss 8, 5
chain, miss 5, 1 long, 2 chain, 1 long in same loop, 3 chain, miss 3, 1 long, 9 chain, miss 8, 1 long,
3 chain, miss 3, repeat.

4th row. 1 long, 2 chain, 1 long, all into space between the first two long of last row, 5 chain,
1 long with 1 chain after it into the loop at the top of the next long stitch, and into each of the ten
next loops, making eleven in all, 3 chain extra after the last (making 5), 1 long into small space,
2 chain, 1 long into same space, 3 chain, 1 long over the next long, 2 chain, miss 2, 2 long in the
third, 1 long in each of the next two, 2 chain, 1 long in the same loop as the last, 1 long in the next
loop, 2 long in the next, 2 chain, 1 long over the other long, 3 chain, repeat.

5th row. 2 long with 2 chain between into small space, 5 chain, double crochet with 4 chain
after into each of the ten small spaces, 1 chain extra, making 5 after the last 2 long with 2 chain
between into small spaces, 3 chain, 1 long over the other, 2 chain, miss three, 2 long into the fourth,
1 long in each of the three next, 2 chain, 1 long in each of the 3 next, 2 long in the next, 2 chain, 1
long over the other, 3 chain.

6th, 7th, and 8th rows. The same as the 5th, but miss four instead of the miss three marked
in Italic, double crochet with 3 chain after occurs once less in each.

9th row. 2 long with 2 chain between into small space, 5 chain, double crochet with 4 chain
after into each of the six small spaces, 1 chain extra after the last, making 5, 2 long with 2 chain
between into small space, 3 chain, 1 long over the other, 2 chain, miss two, 1 long, 2 chain, miss
two, 2 long in the third, 1 long in each of the three next, 2 long in the next two chain, miss two, 1
long, 2 chain, 1 long over the other, 3 chain.
